Extremely tardy Bats Day report

I know these are late. Hey! Some of us have lives. Okay, that's not a valid excuse in my case. But I had other stuff to do so they're a bit late. Let's just jump right in.

You can click on any of these images to see larger versions.

A random observation about Goths: many of them would like to be taller. Or maybe they just like the "clop clop clop" sound.

Not all of them want to be taller.

Heeeeeyyyyyy! What's that going on in back there, bud?

Yup. It's the Cheshire Cat. Shameful! Oh. And he's wearing a kilt. Or a skirt. Or jumbo pants. Lots of goth guys wear them. Whatever they are.

So, where do you find Goths? Hmmmmm... I've got it. Let's try looking for parasols.

See! They don't even have to be holding them. They're apparently drawn to any parasols in the area.

And a note to photographers: if you shoot Goths in broad daylight then you will either blow out their skin or lose detail in the shadows. You can't have them both. Goth skin in broad daylight is the brightest object you'll see outside of an arclamp. Set your exposure accordingly.

Of course, some Goths have a harder time with the pale skin look than others.

And how about the one in the military uniform? I'm not sure of the insignia but it has three chevrons so let's assume she's a sergeant. I call her Sgt. Strict.

Sgt. Strict is hot! Real hot. She makes me want to obey. Yes ma'am! No ma'am! What are your orders ma'am?

And take a look at that parasol. Does that thing actually work?

So you can find them by looking for parasols. Where else do Goths congregate?

In the smoking area of course. I'm not sure why so many Goths smoke. Maybe it's because it turns their lungs black. It was definitely the easiest way to find them. So look for parasols or a plume of smoke. Both work.

And what's going on here?!?

OKAY!!! Who told her it was nursery rhymes day?!? THAT'S NOT FUNNY!!!

Alright. This probably has nothing to do with nursery rhymes. That's just what I thought when I saw her.

For video gamers only: look at the guy on the left in the black and blue t-shirt. What's that on his head? Is that a HEADCRAB!?!

Nope! That just turns out to be his hair. Phew!!! But almost as bad: he's carrying his girlfriend's parasol. And here I thought there was nothing more embarassing that carrying her purse when you're at the mall. I stand corrected. Doesn't seem to be bothering him, though.

Is that parasol in the back cool or what? But wait. There's more to that picture than meets the eye.

Well, now we know where Goths come from. Goths breed just like everyone else. The only difference is that their babies arrive by bat instead of stork.

There were lots of Goth couples walking around.

This is a well matched couple. Disneyland really should sell that kind of ears around Halloween. They'd be very popular.

These two were not the least bit scary looking. I took the picture because I thought the thing on her head was a praying mantis. Sadly, it's just a bow. Suggestion to Goths: praying mantis hats would be cool.

I'm confused. They look like they just left the prom. Is this some splinter group of Goths I've never heard of? Or did they really just come to Disneyland after a long night at the prom? I don't know. But they looked interesting so I took a picture.

I think this couple really has a sense of style. I'm not sure they're really with the Goths. But it's a great look so here's a picture. The other nice thing about this look is that both of them can share the same hair products and makeup. Elegant looking and efficient too!

Now here's true talent. It's not just the outfits. It's the way one carries oneself. In fact, seeing people this good at it makes you refer to yourself as oneself. And raise a pinkie while drinking. These two were really something.

Between the black clothes, pale complexions, and the parasol, it's not a great picture. It's hard to see his beard given the lighting but it's an interesting look. And as a special extra he has ear grommets. I doubt that's what they're called but that's what they look like.

It's nice when they pay attention to the details. After all, it's not all about brightly colored hair.

NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT! Actually this pair had some of the best outfits at the park. I liked that they matched but with two different colors. Naturally they were hanging around the haunted mansion.

I love the way their colors work with the plants around the fountain. I don't know whether they planned it that way or it was a happy accident but it was beautiful. And they took plenty of pictures there.

Okay. Game time! What's the Goth answer to "What's wrong with this picture"? That's easy. The green one doesn't have a parasol.

Oh wait. I think she may have one in her hand.

Yup. She's got one in her right hand.

This link takes you to the original resolution picture so you can see the details. Unfortunately you can now see that their nose hardware and tats are different but what do you want here? They can't be a perfect match. These two had some of the best outfits out there and carried themselves in a manner befitting cultured young ladies. Thank you.

Here's a nice couple. Black outfits: check. Pale skin: check. Interesting hair: check. Odd t-shirt: huh? Okay. I'm not sure what it means. Maybe it's a special Goth code.

This t-shirt doesn't need any special decoding. It says "Fear the Walken". I do. Any sane person does.

I'd think the guy in back is a Vamp. Call it a wild guess.

Actually he seems to have an excess of canines. I still think he's a Vamp. And now I think he's looking at me. In case you're out there bud, I know for a fact that my blood tastes very bad. I cut my finger once and stuck it in my mouth and the blood tasted nasty. That's right... Nasty! Definitely not warm and salty. Nope.

Hmmmm. If Goths were placing those "Kodak picture spot" signs, where would they put them?

Well Duh! Where else? Oh look! It's Sgt. Strict, Pale Challenged, and Ineffective Parasol Lady.

"Okay! Everybody say eeeeeek!"

Wild guess here: "Mary Queen of Goths"?

Oh Lord! Alright, going from right to left...

On the right we have some incredibly creepy tats on her chest. And that thing on her bag is even more creepy. Congratulations.

Next over we have one of our finer outfit / attitude combos. Very regal. She never broke character. Or maybe that's the way she really is. I'm not sure. But I think the reason her parasol isn't open is so she can whack people with it. Or at least point at them sternly. Yea, that would be more regal.

And next over we have a women who's cross-dressing. Okay. Don't get that one. But it is a nice suit. I like the monochrome look.

And leftmost (and I'm not talking about politics) we have... Uh... I don't know. Maybe this is a famous Goth character. Or maybe he's just a proud Communist. But he does have amazing tats. Check out the bride of Frankenstein on his left arm. And, interestingly, on his right arm I can see a particular mouse we all know. Hmmm...

"We're not Goths. We just work here."

"Plus, we're silly. Goths usually aren't silly. And the Haunted Mansion is broken at the moment. We like it when it's broken. It gives us more opportunities to be silly. You can't be silly in there."

Uh oh! The Vamp is back. And he looks pissed. Did I mention that you were the finest undead Goth I saw out there? Oh, and by the way... when driving home I stopped at the supermarket and got a whole lot of garlic. I just thought I'd mention it.

I think she's a Steampunk. You can tell by the goggles. But she's the only one around. I wonder where the Steampunks have gotten to?

I think Steampunks would like the Astro Orbitor. Even without the planets rotating. It's brass and has lots of gizmos. Sadly it's being refurbished. It's too bad. I definitely would have gotten their picture before they had a chance to leave. The way this thing blocks the entrance to TommorowLand they would have been trapped like everyone else.

Are you kidding?!? Captain Nemo wouldn't be caught within a mile of one of these. And neither would Steampunks. No Steampunks here either!

There they are! Steampunks can be found on a steamship. What was I thinking? I should have checked here first.

I'm at a loss for words. Okay... Uhhhhh... I think we have a winner in the hair derby.

She's looking at a picture of herself and her male friend. She likes it. I'm not surprised.

And take a careful look at the tat on her arm. It says "HA HA HA HA ...". That's hardcore!

"We... are... not... amused..."

I call him Mr. Cuts A Fine Figure. Still photos cannot do him justice. Unfortunately, I didn't have a camcorder with me. You had to see this guy in motion to appreciate him.

The women in black with the parasol (okay, that describes about 90% of Goth women - fortunately there's just one visible) is his lady friend. I'm not sure why she's not smiling. It was hard not to smile with Mr. Cuts A Fine Figure striding through the area.

And now for my favorite pictures of the day. They are by no means the Gothiest. Technically they qualify because she has tats and a parasol and he's smoking. But we could safely call them understated as Goth couples go. I just liked these pictures.

Okay. That's all I've got. Bye now.

Re: Extremely tardy Bats Day report

I find Goths to be as creepy as the next guy, but was it really necessary to take this many photos of people you don't even know? You treat them like they're animals or something.

I like the steam punk people. I didn't know that that was a part of Bats Day. Or is it a subdivision. I'm not sure, but anyway, the steam punks are awesome.

Ah, thank you for the commentary, it made me laugh.

And yes, Mr. Cuts a Fine Figure was a SIGHT to behold. I tried getting a picture of him parading down Main Street, but I failed. I'm glad someone else saw and appreciated his fineness.
