Suggest a Disneyland special effect to recreate.

My best friend and I tend to geek out quite a bit on special effects in movies and stuff like Disneyland rides. Summer vacation's coming up this week, and we want to try to recreate a few effects from DLR. Any suggestions as to what we should try. We've already done Pepper's Ghost, and tried to do the Indiana Jones fog projection, but don't have a working projector (tried to improvise one with some different lenses, but no cigar), but we'd love some suggestions. Have fun!

I'd suggest trying the busts from the Haunted Mansion Loading Queue Hallway (The ones who's faces seem to turn and follow you as you are walking). It is an easy effect. You'll figure it out.

I love the "burning logs" in Pirates of the Caribbean, and wouldn't mind having one around the house that you could plug in.

Re: Suggest a Disneyland special effect to recreate.

I made a fake campfire once that actually looked really good and much like the POTC burning logs.

Another fun and easy effect would be the fireflys from Pirates. There are lots of different ways to create that look (and I believe that Disney has tried several of them over the years.

Re: Suggest a Disneyland special effect to recreate.

You guys could make the Fantasmic projection water screens even though you don't have a projector, still would be really cool. All you need is some scrap metal in a circular shape.

Re: Suggest a Disneyland special effect to recreate.

Howabout trying to re-create the "explosions" from indy when mara shoots the death beam at you? Should be fairly easy.....get a large box with a hole cut out, fill it with smoke, and shoot compressed air though the opening. Or you could try making a mini star-field from space mountain. Get your hands on a disco ball, figure out some way to safely take it apart or individually remove the little mirrors, create a custom design on a piece of cardboard or something and you could even put the whole thing on an old turntable or something else that moves around, grab a bunch of flashlights and have yourself a great time in space! Just a couple suggestions :P

Make a hologram of Lampwicks face in the mirrror like in the ride, and then you can replace it since the one in the real Pinocchio's Daring Journey ride is not working.

Do the Chamber of Destiny and Hall of Promise, with actual rotating doors and changing lights

Re: Suggest a Disneyland special effect to recreate.

I had to create a couple of effects for a community theater project last year. I did a crystal ball with Madame Leota as my muse - but time constraints were too tight and I just had sparkly lights and fiber optics in it (which was broken on the first night of produciton!). I don't want to suggest anything too expensive. Look through the toy section at Walmart to see if there is anything you can modify. Good luck and be sure to share your results with us!
