I've heard some whispers that we are getting the WDW version of Leota. I trust my source, but still- only time will tell.

Well on my April 2009 visit, Madame Leota was working fine. But with a slight flickering on her projection.

Maybe the 'real' ghosts are tampering the ride!

Remember that radio behind the wall of the Haunted Mansion, the speaker was made in front of it to drown out the sound. It's still there and making it's non-stop music, creepy.

How is the Walt Disney World version of Leota different from ours?

So basically instead of sitting immobile or floating in circles, WDW's Leota just slowly bobs up and down..?

I think the way they project it is different, from what I've read at doombuggies

The technology is completely different. WDW has an internal projector, inside the ball. DL has an external projector, shooting at the face from out front. They had tried an internal system at DL back in the late 90's, but took it out after a few years because it just didn't look as good. They've improved the internal system so much, however, that it now provides the best look.

HBG2, do you have the source for that info? As a video guy I find it hard to believe that they could pack projection gear inside the head. There just isn't enough room to make an image that big. As always, I could be wrong tho . . .

I'd say there's more than enough room in there -- we've got a computer projector here in my office that would easily fit inside Leota's head, especially if one removed the extraneous casing. And Disney's already patented an internal projection system (optics & lensing, with projector outside the ball) for Leota that uses a short-throw, wide lens. (Can't find the link right now, but I'm sure you could Google for the patent.)
Last edited by Rongo; 08-03-2009 at 01:25 PM. Reason: clarified the bit about internal projection - previous patent was for external projector + internal optics)

The projector is only 4 x 5 x 1.5 inches. It projects a face that looks like a flattened Halloween mask, very weird. I got that from a source that worked on the actual thing itself, but I can't tell who. You can read a fuller account here: DoomBuggies > Explore the history and marvel at the mystery of Disney's Haunted Mansion attractions!

i know this post is very old, and the topic at hand has changed, but going back to the OP question, yes it is still off. I went this sunday and it was off during those two examples you gave during the tamborine and bell.

Actually, it was corrected. Went Yesterday (Monday) two times and all the bells and whistles were back online..

Also, noticed that there was a ball hung by strings that was covered with a black cloth. Looks like we might be getting our floating Leota back?

Haven't you got a chance to play with any of the Pico projectors out there? They are tiny! The trick would be getting the lens right to what you want. The throw is all optics and of course they can store the video in any distorted format they need to get the correct image when actually projected.
