Excellent job - you and HBG2 nailed it!

Re: My head hurts! (trying to find answer to Disneyland question)

I think it is where the HM is now because of the location of the Tom Sawyer island dock station.

Glad it was helpful, guys!

Sorry, but in order for me to buy that, you're gonna need to explain to me how that belief is reconcilable with the animated GIF I posted. Seems pretty clear-cut to me that it was much, much closer to Pirates.

Also, to whoever's methodically voting all the posts as unhelpful - you're freakin' hilarious. I'm dying. Really, I am.

The Tow Sawyer rafts docks were in a different location than they are today. They were near the bridge near the Plantation House.

The photographer was right about where the people on the right are in this photo:

amazing pictures.. I had no idea that chicken restaurant even existed. it's hard to believe DL looked like that at one point. Especially that last picture of Tom Sawyer's Island.. compared to what it looks like today, the difference is incredible.

Even though it's pretty much been shown that it couldn't be HM, the "dance hall" could be HM. Would the ball room count?

Wow, thanks Data! That overlay cleared up a brain-busting quandary for me as well. I could never figure out, when looking at old photos, how they fit NOS and the HM into that tiny spit of land between ROA and JC. I kept thinking that they must have taken a bend in the river of the JC.

Now its clear that they moved the DLRR tracks further out into backstage, widening the park at that point. Until your overlay, it had never occurred to me that they might have done that. Thanks again!

Where was the Magnolia Park bandstand located in relation to the Plantation? Could that be the mystery dance location?

Complete with an animated GIF, no less! We're not worthy!

That's been done a few times in Disneyland's history, at least three I think. Notice the changing shape of the park (at least as delineated by the tracks) from the aerial photos. It used to be shaped like a rounded triangle (sort of like a guitar pick), but now it's a lot closer to a circle--basically the three straightaways have bulged outward in order to make more room for major attractions, most of which need still more room outside of the tracks. It's not common knowledge, but Disneyland has grown quite a bit in area since it opened--about 50%, actually (counting all attraction areas).

I'm thinking that the question tossed at the OP was a memory-conflation of the Chicken Plantation and the Golden Horseshoe, which was (and is) the only place at DL that could be called a "dance hall."

Look in Datameisters Animated GIF of the aerial photos - the Holidayland tent was right about where the Haunted Mansion show building is now, and the ball diamond was right about where the Pirates show building is.

Isn't it nice to have access to old photos?

WOW!!! They even copied the chinese lanterns into the Blue Bayou! (as I have always wondered what kind of connection chinese lanterns had with New Orleans!) Thanks for the pics, Dave!!! I had know about the plantation restaurant, but never realized that it was such a huge building.

It wasn't all that close to the Plantation. The Magnolia Park area was swallowed up by the expansion of the Jungle Cruise and probably provided some space for the inside-the-tracks show building of Pirates of the Caribbean. These days, the area is most likely where the Indy queue snakes alongside the Jungle Cruise.

Well, loosely speaking, both it and the Plantation made way for Pirates of the Caribbean, so I suppose that you could make an argument for it.

To Data, HBG2, Daveland and everyone else who made every effort to answer the OP's question.

Not to add to the mystery but "When was the Adventureland footbridge removed and the "river" placed underground?"
