I hear that fire's a pretty lethal carrier of that thar swine flu. Good thing that dragon won't be breathing it all over the river now.

So, the story from a Cast Member is: While programming the new dragon, they ran it too hard and the computers crashed. Unfortunately, the auto-shut off valves weren't quite working yet, so they sent CM's scrambling to manually shut off the valves. They didn't quite make it there in time, and the dragon collapsed upon itself. It was specially designed that way [to collapse upon itself] to keep all the other performers safe. She said it should be ready to go in a few weeks.

Maybe it's too early (or late in my case) but if it was designed that way, then why did it break when it did what it was supposed to do?

KAN''s story is plausible, but you are supposed to think these things through BEFORE you wreck the first production model accidentally. Repeat after me, Failure Mode Analysis. Having it collapse into a closed position in a destructive manner as an E-Stop is NOT necessarily a good failure mode, because people could be standing in that envelope.

Repeat after me, Stop Means STOP.

Imagine every possible way that something can go terribly wrong, and a dozen more that most people will immediately dismiss as "beyond possibility", and make sure it fails safely in all of them.

Because the way it really fails will defy all imagination- since your imagination coming up with the possible ways has to follow the laws of perceived reality. Chaos has no such limitations, it can do the impossible twelve times before lunch.

There are a LOT of airline crash aftermath interviews with the pilot and/or copilot (when they survived, obviously...) where they say "If you had thrown that exact sequence of seemingly unconnected failures at me all at once in the Simulator as a 'training exercise' I would've declared it physically impossible, gotten up and walked out."

This product actually exists:
"We have this Emergency Stop system for circular table saws - if the tip of a blade tooth so much as brushes into human skin (before getting deep enough to actually cut it) the safety system senses the contact and it triggers an immediate E-stop and retraction of the blade. Of course, that E-stop is initiated by a small explosive charge firing an aluminum block into the turning saw blade to instantly stop it and shove it backwards and down under the table height, which wrecks the blade and usually bends the saw arbor and the raise/tilt mechanism beyond repair, meaning you have to replace the entire table saw...

Yes, the saw is effectively destroyed - But it does it's job and keeps people from getting hurt. The system works exactly as designed."

I wouldn't want to be the guy who tries to stuff his arm into the saw as a demonstration test. It only has to fail once, and then they call you "Lefty" for the rest of your life...

The difference: The saw might be destroyed by initiating the E-stop, but it isn't going to collapse on anyone stopping.

Don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but when Maleficent sets the river on fire, there are flame torches that go off in a ring around the front of the island, in addition to the main igniters that set the river on fire. It's a fairly impressive effect, and I don't remember it being there back in March.

So it was designed to break that's smart. I under stand protecting the performers but theres got to be a way to do it and protect the dragon at the same time.

Re: new dragon broke before the first show. (merged threads)

KAN is right.

The dragon is designed to collapse into itself so it can fit into it's pit. BUT, it does this at a slow pace. When the valves fail to release the fluid slowly, it would come crashing down into itself rather than slowly collapse.

We were talking to Evil Queen by the way, the one from the show. She is also a Flower Pedal.

I have also been getting this same story from multiple techs there, as well as one of the main stage managers that has been running the shows all this week.

Ya know that F! was only supposed to be around for 5 years, but it's stayed because it's so popular? Now it looks like it'll be around like forever.

Good to hear the fix may be sooner rather then later...

Bruce- I know it was an example, but how does a saw work if it's safety feature is to stop when it's blade hits something?

Again just busting your chops. I know what you mean. It's imperative to be safe, but the design should make every attempt not to destroy the equipment in the process. As to the Murphy's Law comment... I remember this military conversation in a book about WW2-

Gunny- "Change the plans sir because when the time comes; that's not going to work, they won't be there, they will be there, that's going to work, this is going to be late and that's going to be early"
LT- "And how do you intend to predict the future?"
Gunny- "Simple... that's the worst that can happen!"

Per the individual being interviewed Gunny was 5/6... one wasn't late... it flat out never happened at all! My point is that the best plan expects everything to go wrong, if it goes right then its an unexpected surprise.
