And that would be the problem with marketing - you can't wait until AFTER everything is done if you want to maximize the effect. Synchronizing marketing efforts and product launches is just the way it is. You address it by having realistic plans and fully baked products.

This isn't marketings fault unless they dictated the show be ready before it was said to be - this would be the fault of those implementing the show technology and design.

But clearly, this product was not fully baked. I'm sure there's plenty of blame for that to go around.

And, if it wasn't clear from my initial post, I'm not blaming marketing for this, except in that everything I've seen has been built around the dragon; they left themselves no fall-back position in case of draconic decapitation.

I see a pattern emerging which is quite troublesome. The Yeti at DAK, DL's new monorails, and LCI WALL-E to name but a few. Perhaps the previous poster was correct and outsourcing is at the root of this dragon debaucle. But something tells me this is more of a design problem, which may or may not be Disney's responsibility. Regarding the other issues with Yeti and the monorails, Disney was most definitely at fault, but who knows about the dragon.

Great way to kick off the summer promotion. Hopefully it will be fixed by Fourth of July.

Re: new dragon broke before the first show.

We're planning to be at the park tomorrow (where else would I want to spend my anniversary?) I'll try to take pics if there's anything to be seen, and ask around a little bit.

Poor dragon :-(

Didn't say it would all go according to plan . But simply saying 'we can't do anything until its finished' just isn't viable. There are risks.. and that's why in product management you strive to identify those risks and dependencies and plan on how to mitigate them or minimize their impact. Some of those may be the type of testing, or schedule you have. But simply doing nothing tho isn't an option

Certainly a few black eyes of late. But from the outside, it's sure hard to know where the failures are. Hopefully internally they are reviewing such projects and analyzing why they failed when they got to the parks. People can't just hang something on 'outsourcing' or not. Outsourcing does not mean you don't have any oversight or input. If you do give those up, those are your own internal management failures - not the failures of outsourcing as a concept. Failing to manage an outsourced relationship is a common trap many companies fall into, but that doesn't mean outsourcing is bad. It just means just like doing things internally.. you gotta do it right

Re: new dragon broke before the first show.

I admit - I have never seen Fantasmic with a dragon before. Of course when I went when I was younger, we never stayed at night so I didn't really see the show until I was older. So I went on Youtube and watched it. That is cool!!! If the new Dragon is better than this, it will make for one heck of a show!
Murphy - Get better and soon!!!!!!

That's what happens when you outsource. Yet again Disney is paying double on a project for being cheap. When are these failed policies going to make them finally realize how shortsighted they are?

Re: new dragon broke before the first show.

I say they should call the dragon Marie!

Everyone can point a finger at someone else. I really don't care what caused the problem... just fix it. That's one specific thing that annoyed me at Disney. Everyone spent a massive amount of time covering their own tails... and minimal time trying to actually fix the problem. Generally once the problem was fixed, everyone would come out of hiding trying to claim some credit for it. Entertainment, and Attractions... the two departments that have a tradition of pulling oversized rabbits out of undersized hats.

Re: new dragon broke before the first show.

Not to get off the subject but why did you people call the first dragon bucky for I've never hear of it. To me I always knew the dragon as Maleficent's dragon form.

Re: new dragon broke before the first show.

Captain - I have heard/read that the original Fantasmic! dragon head was made with two fire-jetting tubes in it. The tubes were set in the upper jaw like teeth, but angled outward so that the fire would shoot out toward the river. Apparently this made the puppet dragon look like it had buck teeth, so the CMs who worked with her nicknamed the puppet dragon "Bucky".

You are right, of course, that the character Bucky plays is indeed Maleficent and is certainly female!

Re: new dragon broke before the first show.

My wast side CM friend text me last night about the dragon. He used the word explode. I asked him if it fell off or maybe flared up and he said no, exploded. He followed with " there is a 5% chance it will be there opening night"

I just had to share, even if it sounds absurd. I tend to take his words a bit seriously because he will be working F! on the 11th.
