    Promoting Disney and the 2010 All Star Game

    If you don't know by now, the 2010 Major League Baseball All Star Game is going to be held in the beautiful city of Anaheim, California -- the home of everyone's beloved Disneyland!

    This is an exciting time for the Angels organization, and gives the city of Anaheim a wonderful opportunity to showcase itself throughout the 2010 Major League Baseball season.

    My concern is this -- will Disney also jump on the bandwagon? I notice that whenever they show an important Angels game on national TV they often do a flyover of Paradise Pier. I don't know why they choose that specific spot, but they always show that area of the DLR for some reason. This year, with the construction going on, I don't know what they are showing to be honest with you. I do know that on ESPN of all channels, instead of Sleeping Beauty Castle, they showed Cinderella's Castle!

    Something tells me that Disney is not going to do much to promote themselves during this opportunity to give themselves nation-wide exposure. Take a look at the 2009 logo for the All Star Game which was played this year in St. Louis:


    Just yesterday Major League Baseball released the logo for the 2010 All Star Game in Anaheim. This is what it looks like:


    If you notice the 2009 logo incorporates area attractions such as the St. Louis Arch into the design. But the 2010 logo has nothing promoting the surrounding attractions of Anaheim. Wouldn't it be cool to add a small Sleeping Beauty Castle or something to the logo? Also, what should Disney do to promote Disneyland during this exciting time for the Angels and the city of Anaheim? I know that Disney is very protective about its copyrights, but sometimes I think they can be a bit overboard about things. This is one opportunity where I don't think they should pass up.

    Sorry if this is the wrong forum. I thought about putting this in the Sports Zone, but this really is asking what can Disney do to promote themselves and Disneyland during the nation-wide exposure of the All Star Game?

    Adding a castle to the logo would be too... Disney.

    I like it how it is. The halo can not only represent the Angels, but also the Big A outside the stadium.

    Well when people think of Anaheim, they don't think of the Angels, they think of the Disneyland Resort. If might just be licensing issues, so thats why they didn't put anything Disney.

    Disneyland won't need to do much to promote itself. The game's being held in its back yard, so by association it will get a lot of free advertising.

    As far as the logos, the Gateway Arch is an iconic symbol of the city of St. Louis and is located in close proximity to Busch Stadium. Sleeping Beauty Castle is an iconic symbol of Disneyland, which happens to be in Anaheim. Cities host All-Star Games. Theme parks do not. There's also the issue of licensing. To use the Arch, Major League Baseball had only to get permission from the National Park Service, a federal agency. I suspect that was much easier than getting permission from Disney to use the castle or Matterhorn to be part of a huge chunk of MLB marketing.

    That said, do you think ESPN is really going to miss an opportunity to cross promote its parent company next year? Disneyland will get plenty of exposure, have no doubt. Disney already had a contest tie-in at the All-Star Game this year promoting "G-Force." You can count on them to ratchet up the marketing machine next year with event tie-ins and contests.

    Given how the Angels view themselves, they should have incorporated the Los Angeles city skyline into their logo. Using an icon that is not in L.A. would have wrecked their delusion.

    I think most people outside of southern California view Disneyland and Anaheim as separate places. I tend to view Anaheim as the city where Disneyland is located. There's only been one time in my life when I spent time in Anaheim and didn't go to Disneyland (and spending the night in a hotel across the street from Disneyland knowing I would not be there the next day stunk).

    I think incorporating a Disneyland icon into the All Star Game logo would have rendered the host team irrelevant. Attention would have been drawn to Disneyland and not the Angels. City landmarks that directly identify a city (Golden Gate Bridge, St. Louis Arch) work great, but Anaheim's most famous landmark has very little to do with the city itself and most people may not even know the city where Disneyland is located.

    Regarding the logo/L.A. references: Over the past few years, MLB has had some alternatle logos for All-Star Games that have specifically named the host city, but the ones I've seen for 2010 make no mention of Anaheim.

    As the 2010 Game relates to Disney: I've seen somewhere, maybe on Wikipedia (so take that for what it's worth), that the Red Carpet parade before the game will be held at Disneyland (I guess along the regular parade route). Has anyone else heard that?
