Unfortunately I think that Disney is doing this because they know that they can get away with it. I just recently got my daughter her first pair of ears and my sucker of a fiancee paid the $7 dollars for the "premium" lettering. He wanted it because he thought that it looked better. I wanted the more traditional stitching. Also we were asked 3 times if we were sure that we only wanted her name and not the year as well. Do they want us to have the year on there so that I can buy ears every year we go? I felt like they were trying to force it on us.

From DLToday on Twitter. Looks like the policy stays the same.

Re: Basic Hat Writing No Longer Free

On a hot summer day, 3 dollars would buy me a dole whip. I would rather not buy the ears (hot and sweaty on a hot day anyway.) and have a dole whip instead and have the extra money for El Pollo Loco for lunch. I always leave mid afternoon for a rest and El Pollo Loco... Because I am on a budget, and I put my money where I think it best suits me, not Disneyland..... And right now that is how most people are thinking. My favorite souvenir ever are the park maps.. I just can't help it. I love them.. I don't need no ears!!And the truth is, Disneyland is NOT the same quality anymore as when Walt was around. Sad, but it is the truth... Remember when they did maintenance EVERY night?? So they charge me more and more and give me less and less. Yes, percieved value. That is it in a nut shell....

Unless they think your real name is too controversial, then they just say "sorry."

They're not supposed to. They're supposed to put it on if you provide proof. I saw someone get "Kike", pronounced "Kee-kay" on their hat. It's short for Enrique.

The rules still stand. Names, derivatives of names, titles, and family relationships (e.g. Mom, Dad, Grandma). For example, if Dr. Leonard McCoy wanted something personalized, he could get "Leonard," "Leo," "Doctor," or "Dr. McCoy," but not "Bones."

Although this won't help you now, the Cast Member was incorrect. Official policy is to do any name if there is an accompanying government issued identification with that name on it. I personally have seen an ID that said "Pepsi" and the Cast Member embroidered that on the hat.

What are the chances of me having difficulties bringing them in without someone thinking I have not paid for them? I will gladly pay the $3/hat, but I really don't want to have to "repurchase" them just to get them embroidered.
If it is a hat that is currently in stock, it should not be a problem, but don't quote me on that. You would likely be asked to pay the $3.00 though.

It wasn't till 2007 that she was able to make a trip out again and we had no trouble whatsoever getting it embroidered because I had made sure to keep the receipt with the hat all this time. The only complication we had was when we gave the hat to the lady to stitch, she gave us a wide eyed stare and said "these are non-replaceable....If I mess up, it'll be ruined!" Luckily, everything came out fine and the hat is sitting in my mom's cabinet right now.
Your mileage may vary with this, but generally, yeah, if something goes wrong, whether it be user error or machine error, there is little that can be done if the hat is not currently in stock and outside of the return policy window.

I don't understand why some Cast Members do this. If you told me you only wanted the name, that's all I do. But if you tell me you wanted the year embroidered on the hat and you didn't get the Premium embroidery, I would be obligated to tell you no. Names, titles, or family relations only.

Something special and unique is now gone from Disneyland. Bad show, Disney. No word on if the "premium" hat writing has increased in price or not. Still, I guess even the basic hat writing is now premium, isn't it.
What a shame. I am sure the machine that is used has long been paid for.

Sorry, I was writing between calls at work. I meant when they checked every bulb, checked paint and fixed it immediately, everynight. They don't do it like that anymore.

Just a wild guess, but I sure as hell bet he wouldn't be shoveling a billion-plus into fixing DCA, nor be in the hole for how many millions for a monorail upgrade, because the guys he'd have hired for WED would've done it right the first time.

One thing's for sure, Gurr wouldn't have that golden tan -- he'd be pulling 60-hr weeks in Glendale to straighten out the mess, retirement or no!

What's the difference between basic and premium writing?

It's a shame that Disney is doing this - I understand that they have a business to run, but they should also understand how hard it is for families to just get there because admission is so high.
