Re: Disney's California Adventure Project Tracker VII

I thought he said they will be using 2K projectors, as in 2000 lines of pixels, meaning an HD image. I work with 2K cinema projectors that utilize DLP 3-chip processors. These projectors can throw a huge high-definition image with amazing color. I believe Fantasmic is currently using these projectors. We use anywhere between 2K to 6K watt lamps in our projectors for the theaters, so I can imagine a 20K watt lamp being used for a huge outdoor display.

And the projectors listed in the above posts have another on DLP cinema projectors. The DLP chip alone is 50 grand.

Nope, 20k digital projectors. Now how many did he say? Was it 18 or 29, I'll have to watch the videos again.

Just did. He doesn't say in the video. But the d23 page about WOC says "nearly 30" projectors. In a text interview with someone (still trying to find it) he specified 29 projectors.

I was wondering what might be behind the blue wall under the pier, also it looks like some sort of metal framework that is hanging under the pier just to the left of the control booth.

LOL....those are outhouses behind the blue wall. The metal platform is a walkway attached to the dam that separates the GRR water from the lagoon water.

Something that should be noted. 20K and 2K, Are NOT the same thing. 20K refers to the brightness of the projector, not the resolution, 2K is resolution. The projectors going into WOC are likely 4K Resolution and 20k Brightness.

Steve said they were purchasing 32 of them (or 28, I cant remember), but a few of them were going to be extras.

Re: Disney's California Adventure Project Tracker VII

Since there will be two layers of video projections, one for the front layer and one for the back screen', could the front projections be projected from the front as well?

That's what it was. 32 purchased, 29 in use in the show. Thanks k_peek. And I'll bet you're right, they are 4k resolution projectors. Definitely 20k lumen projectors.

Re: Disney's California Adventure Project Tracker VII

Some interesting bits from the new Birnbaum's Disneyland Resort guide that arrived at my library today:

The fun map graphics for DCA still show things like a giant orange on the map, but it calls everything by the new names (e.g. SSS, Goofy's Sky Skool, etc.). Hollywood Land is the place where you find things like TOT. And the parade route runs from the existing gate by the hub cap and ends at the new gate where the walls are up at the end of CS, behind SSS. So much for the parade going through BVS.

I guess Birnbaum gets special preview info direct from Disney.

Regarding the idea of HD digital projectors with more light output than you can shake a stick at, aren't we quite limited to the resolution and clarity offered when you project onto water? Unless water screen technology has really advanced since Fantasmic, I'm wondering how noticeable "HD" is going to be on a fluid surface.

Now, I haven't seen the new Fantasmic projections in person. Is there a noticeable difference?

Well, they'll be at least as good as the F! projectors. The most notable difference in the F! projectors is the brightness. As such, there is a noticeable edge on the images. Other than that, they look fabulous.

actually it's not that much of a noticable difference at all. It's still blury and hard to tell what going on at times. But like I said, they're using 2 per screen cause it will be much brighter. Also if you look at testing they did earlier last year. The images are a LOT brighter and clearer that fantasmic. And that was just a test. Not only that but I think Mist screen technolgy has improved since fantasmic, so I'm guess the mist screens will also be different and produce a different(even if it's just slightly) surface than fantasmic.

That's what I'm wondering too. It was said before that projections on water look best when projected from behind, but perhaps it's even clearer if projected from both directions. Also taking into account that there will be multiple layers of projections like you said, and multiple projection surfaces, perhaps they will have projectors coming in from many angles. This may be wishful thinking, but recently four (I believe) new round foundation/footer frames popped up between the show platform and viewing area. Maybe these will be smaller locations for projectors? Perhaps we'll get our fancy lighthouses after all, maybe they were planing to use both designs all along. Then, with the combination of the small (I hope) fancy lighthouses, and the large towers in back, it may give the feeling of the bay having marina elements, with different types of mini piers to tie boats off to. Now we just need boat props.

Re: Disney's California Adventure Project Tracker VII

I find it highly unlikely that the projectors will be anything other than 1920 x 1080 HD resolution projectors. Going to 2k or 4k would be pointless given the screen surface (mist), and the added expense of 4k servers and processing makes no sense at all. The term 2k gets bandied about at times but means something quite specific.

I suspect we will see a large quantity of Barco FLM HD20 projectors rolling in any time now. 1920 x 1080 HD resolution is a standard format in the entertainment industry - not quite 2k which is 2048 x 1080 and specifically a digital cinema format. They use Barco's already for the Small World facade projections. I haven't seen what they installed in Fantasmic when they replaced the 70mm film projectors but I wouldn't be surprised to see Barco's in there as well. Second choice would likely be Christies, an image of which was posted a bit earlier.

Regarding projecting on the front of mist or water, dont you think if they could have projected Davy Jones on that mist screen in POC from the front they would have? Next time you're on Pirates look at the mist screen from the back after you pass. I was the projectionist for the original film tests for Fantasmic years ago. From the Island I could barely discern any image and figured it was a bust until I had a chance to go out to the front side and take a look. In order to read an image on mist or water, you have to project from the rear, and you want to get the projection lens as low as possible and shoot up towards the screen so that the hot spot is down at the bottom of the image area and your audience isn't staring straight into 8000 watts of Xenon light (and IR radiation btw). That's why the F! projectors are just at the water line.

Anyone on Fantasmic who knows which projectors are in there? I'm curious to know now... lol
