    • 9/2/09: Some Facts About "Murphy" The Fantasmic Dragon

    * The new dragon is a fully animated three-dimensional design that replicates the movements of the dragon in “Sleeping Beauty.”

    * Maleficent, a classic Disney villain, transforms into a dragon during “Fantasmic!” – just as she does in the famous Walt Disney Pictures film.

    * The “Fantasmic!” dragon is 32 feet wide and weighs approximately 18,000 pounds.

    * When she stretches to full height, the dragon stands 45 feet tall.

    * When she “lurks” beneath the “Fantasmic!” stage prior to appearing, the dragon contracts to 22 feet tall.

    * During the spectacular finale, she rises to stage level in 35 seconds on a custom-built elevator.

    * Tri-color LED lighting fixtures put the gleam in the dragon’s eyes.

    * In her spectacular appearance, Maleficent breathes a plume of fire 35 feet long, lighting the Rivers of America on fire for 25 seconds during the show.

    * During the show, the dragon is controlled and monitored by four computer systems.

    * The dynamic and menacing animation of the dragon is achieved via 18 axes of motion which enable a wide range of movement in her eyes, ears, mouth, tongue, neck, wings and body.

Disneyland dragon makes first public appearance

    September 1st, 2009, 8:34 pm · 1 Comment · posted by Mark Eades

The Disneyland dragon has finally joined the Fantasmic! show.
Tonight, the problematic dragon came out in public for the first time during a water-and-light show on the Rivers of America.

Disney officials announced this afternoon that the animatronic dragon would debut after facing technical trouble all summer. The official summer season ended last month without an appearance by the dragon, which was the centerpiece in promotional materials.

Several in the audience had been waiting all summer and came just to see the show.

“I was disappointed with the delays, but felt it was worth the wait,” said Tyler Walker of Santa Ana.

Walker said he had come out several times during the summer in the hopes of seeing the dragon.

“It was amazing. It was huge,” said Walker. “It commanded the stage better than the old one.”

Inspired by a character in “Sleeping Beauty,” the dragon was designed to stretch as high as 45 feet tall and blow a 35-foot-long plume of fire to ignite the Rivers of America in Frontierland.

While the plume of fire worked well during tests earlier in the week, it did not work as planned during its first appearance to the public. However, many didn’t seem to notice.

“It was worth the money I paid to be here tonight,” said Wayne Campbell of Fresno.

The show is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday; and 9 and 10:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

After that, the show will only go on during Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays through the end of the year. On busy days, Disney can add extra shows, but the decision is not made until that day.

Check back later tonight for new photos and video of Fantasmic!

    • 9/1/09: Miceage.com Hompage Editor's Note From Al Lutz - "Murphy" the Fantasmic dragon is scheduled to perform tonight at 8:15 pm, 9/1/09.

Disneyland released this official statement about the dragon delays today: “The dragon in Fantasmic! is technically complex and the largest and most fully animated Disney character ever created for a live stage show. We want to make sure it’s perfect before adding it to the show,” said Mike Hyland, director of Disneyland Resort public relations.

Disneyland has yet to release a new debut date.

We should probably start with the latest news on Murphy (the new Fantasmic! dragon), since his failure to appear will be what the summer of 2009 is remembered for. All of the mechanical and structural repairs and alterations have been completed on the dragon as of last week.
The story of exactly what went wrong with the robotic dragon in the first place is a tricky one, and the information that has fallen into place over the last month now points not to mechanical design flaws or errors in the installation process, but rather how the dragon was being operated by Disney's own people once the outside contractor had installed the robot this past spring.
As only Disney and the stifling bureaucracy of Team Disney Anaheim (TDA) can do, they turned the whole issue into a witch hunt of sorts, with each department happy to make more work for the others in an attempt to prove their necessity to their various bosses. In short, the process of fixing the dragon became an epic battle of bureaucracy and engineering, retrofitting in additional equipment on the fly to handle all of the added weight that wouldn't have been needed had the robot simply been operated as he was designed.
The issue has been such a big deal that none other than reclusive Disneyland President Ed Grier paid a visit to Tom Sawyer Island last week to see the dragon for himself (center in the photo below), and the Anaheim Cast Members all know that if it's something that gets Ed Grier actually into the park it must be extremely unusual and very important.

The man to Ed's right in the above photo is Al Weiss, the president of worldwide operations for Disney parks and resorts, and the person between Ed and Jay Rasulo on the totem pole. Al was here visiting from Florida last week and he and Ed went out to the island to see the dragon and receive some of the info into why the repair process has been so lengthy and costly.
The good news is that the dragon has been running through his paces correctly in recent days, and the delay now is more about waiting for unique valves and replacement parts for the ferocious fire breathing effect and the need to get in some quick rehearsal time before the public debut. Barring any unplanned setbacks, the dragon could appear later this week.

Those who have seen him run through his paces in person are very impressed with his size and sophistication as he glares his glowing LED eyes and bends down within a few feet of a trembling Mickey Mouse. You can bet the MiceChatters will be following his every move when he does make his first public appearance. The silver lining is that Fantasmic! has now been added back to all weekends until Thanksgiving, after originally being slated to close for the fall.

Currently there is so much conflicting information, so who knows when she will show up in Fantasmic!

The Fantasmic! stage around Noon on Thursday

Here is an article from the Orange County Register this morning with some interesting comments from the Disneyland Spokespersons.

    http://ocresort.freedomblogging.com/...on-show/15465/

    Quote:

Still, Disney officials promise that fans should get ample time to see the dragon, once it’s ready, because the Fantasmic show will be extended until the end of the year, said John McClintock, a Disneyland spokesman. Disney recently decided to add extra time for the show. On busy days, a third show is added at 11:30 p.m.

But a firm date for the dragon’s debut has yet to be released.

And don't forget, that in early 2010, the Rivers of America is scheduled to be drained for regular maintenance that happens every few years, and of course, will not allow Fantasmic! to perform.

The big question on everyone's mind is obviously, when will Murphy the ever-so-troublesome Fantasmic dragon finally appear? The current answer is not for at least a couple more weeks, and perhaps not even until after the Nightastic campaign officially ends on the 23rd. The company contracted by Disneyland's Entertainment Department to build and install the finished dragon recently completed that task, after weeks of shoehorning new equipment and repaired infrastructure back into the pit on Tom Sawyer Island.

The newly redesigned dragon and the elevator lift it rises up on is so much heavier now with all of the reinforcements that four new larger motors also just had to be installed to ensure that Murphy can rise up out of his lair two or three times per night on cue.

    What do you see?
But now, almost two months behind schedule, the dragon has been turned over to the Entertainment Department to begin the extensive programming and testing needed to allow Murphy to go through his scripted paces, including the very tricky element of spitting giant plumes of fire out over the Rivers of America. Since the folks working in the Entertainment Department's technical services group really don't know how the dragon will respond to all of the work yet to come, the tentative debut date of August 16th now being considered (and posted as gospel by some who should know better) should be taken with a huge grain of salt.

    This better?
True, the mechanical bits were done this weekend and it appears to be "fixed". But there are still days and weeks of programming and testing needed. This wasn't going to be a human-controlled effect like the original dragon, which had an operator down in the pit working a glorified joystick to get the boom and head to move around at showtime. This is going to be more like an animatronic that has a computer program that goes through its paces automatically at the push of a button from the control booth. That takes programming and testing to make sure the clearances all work and it moves and acts like the show designers want it to. It may look finished, but there is still plenty of work and testing to be completed.
The other mess the Fantasmic team has been trying to fix is the new Flotsam and Jetsam (or Flotsam and Jetski, as the crew calls the creatures powered by Honda AquaTrax machines). One of the eels ran into the central pyrotechnics barge while snaking its way across the water during the show just over a week ago, and since then the eels have been cut from nightly performances. Luckily the driver was okay and no major damage was done to any equipment, but the eels were pulled until a fix could be made for the extremely poor vision the drivers have to work with underneath the eel head.
The solution appears to be the installation of tiny night-vision cameras with a small screen inside the driver compartment that will allow the drivers to maneuver around the island and floating equipment barges much easier. They've been rehearsing the new night-vision eels since this past Friday, and if things continue to go well the return of Flotsam and Jetski could happen by the time you read this update.

    Blame Game
All of these technical problems for the reworked Fantasmic show have caused a predictable round of finger pointing, and the popular culprit in Entertainment is now the decision by TDA to delay the Fantasmic rehab by two months in order to continue nightly performances of the show last January and February.
Regular readers will remember that Fantasmic went to an unusual nightly schedule of performances through the dead of winter while Main Street USA was repaved and all parades were cancelled for three months. The decision then to continue offering Fantasmic ever night so that at least one major "spectacular" was offered each day to winter crowds was a noble one, but even then it wasn't a popular one with the folks in Entertainment who wanted more time to prepare all of their new summer toys. The result was an extremely rushed spring rehab that left many loose ends and an expensive new dragon who broke his neck with a thunderous crash just days before his official debut.
The response and damage control now requires another lengthy rehab for Fantasmic, and the show is now planned to close for two months just after Labor Day regardless of whether or not Murphy debuts this August. The schedules for Disneyland haven't been publicly released yet, but weekends in September will only feature the Celebrate street party and encore performances of the Magical fireworks. The Remember fireworks look to have entered Yesterland, unless they get a sudden reprieve.
This upcoming winter will also have an extended Fantasmic closure, as the Rivers of America are drained for a needed refurbishment from January to April. After a few months of rehearsals, Fantasmic should return again in June for the 2010 summer season, and only then will it likely feature every element it was supposed to feature this summer. 2010 also means the 55th Anniversary, and the Anaheim property will get in on a broader theme centered on the "Happiest Memories On Earth," with World of Color making its debut as part of that campaign kick-off in the spring without an adjacent Fantasmic to compare it to.

Al Lutz is reporting the following in the "Editor Notes" that can be found at the top of the MiceAge page.

    Quote:

Work on Murphy (Fantasmic's dragon) has slowed upon the realization that some of the mechanics need to be re-engineered entirely. Right now it's not expected to debut in time for the 17th, and people are again talking about a timetable in weeks instead of days.

Speaking of hard working CM's, there's plenty of them in the basement of Tom Sawyer Island with that oh-so-troublesome new dragon. While TDA managers work behind the scenes to try and figure out how to handle the contractor who built the dragon (and who is also building Universal's big new King Kong up in Hollywood), technicians and engineers are working down in the pit nearly every day now making repairs to the dragon's infrastructure. While the situation is still very fluid, the latest info we have as of this post is that the dragon could debut as early as Monday, July 13.

As seen on TV... well, briefly.
The sooner the better, obviously, as huge crowds continue to pack the 9,000 space Fantasmic! viewing area each night, drawn by all of the marketing hype built around a dragon. Disneyland's Entertainment department will continue with overnight rehearsals and programming sessions for the dragon all this week, so wish them luck. They have also been testing a new entry for the nifty Flotsam and Jetsam characters, bringing them in from opposite sides of the island, which was the original plan before they had to cut the speeds due to the big waves and wakes the powerful jet-skis underneath created.

The other main piece of news that Al Lutz reported in his editor notes this week was regards to Murphy, the new Dragon that was designed for Fantasmic! He reported that the "body" of the new dragon has been repaired and now is theatrically dressed for the show. Alas, he is still "headless" as there are still worries about the proposed repairs to its neck. This is both a safety issue (especially to the performers) and a longevity issue, as they want to make sure the repair will work, and additional repairs won't be needed for a Dragon that is expected to perform 2 or 3 times a night. So the alternative version of Fantasmic! will keep being offered until Disney is sure that everything is working just right.

Poo. I'm a freelance videographer/photographer and asked for media membership from Disneyland and they rejected me. If true, i am sure that Disney would've invited some of the staff of micechat and/or other disney forums.

But let's think about this: If that twitter is true, Al mentioned something about getting a heads up from local news papers hours before its debut. I think this would mean, once again, if that statement from twitter is true, a debut on Monday evening, or Tuesday at the latest. GRAIN OF SALT FOLKS! This is just my analysis of the given factors and info. What I said doesn't mean anything is true.

Couldn't agree with you more. Just like the night before the public saw it on N!

Like I said, I highly doubt it because:

-First of all, monday morning is false, unless they're only appearing the dragon.

-Second, we would have known from a true source.

Since the thread is now closed, I can't reply there.

"Why would you pay to see something that was never announced to be there? Sure they said it'd be there for summer nightastic, but you very well knew that the dragon broke and was a no show for months. So the way I see it, you paid to see something which was not guaranteed to show, yet seem upset that it did not show. And I don't see how the broadway thing ties in with this."

I didn't know the head fell off until after I went to the park to see the show. When I got the answer "The dragon has stage fright" I started investigating and that's when I found out all of the information.

And I posted about Broadway tickets because people say there are other things to do in the park. I worked there for years and have done everything in the park. I paid to see a show that they couldn't deliver and they were lying about.

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.
