Original Disneyland Songs - When Will We Get More? :)

It's a Small World. Yo-Ho, Yo-Ho, a Pirates Life For Me. The Great Outdoors. Grim Grinning Ghosts. In the Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room. There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow.

Over the years, Disneyland has produced some very memorable music (much more than what's mentioned above). While there have been some new instrumental scores in the last few years (such as Space Mountain's, which I enjoy ), will we ever get a new, original full-fledged, with-lyrics-and-all Disneyland song again? And when was the last new one? (I guess Golden Dreams had a song?)

Why doesn't Disney invite Alan Menken over to compose something for the parks, the way the Sherman Brothers use to write for both Disney films and attractions?

Disney has used non-original music in their attractions and movies from the beginning. The Tiki Room features the Hawaiian War Chant, and up until recently featured the Barcarole by Offenbach. They also had many non-Disney songs in CBJ and America Sings.

In the movies, most obviously you have Fantasia, but there's also Sleeping Beauty whose music is based on Tcahikovsky.

Of course they did - and in wonderfully effective ways . I'm just wondering when and if we will get more original songs. This is not a knock against the use of pre-existing songs.

We do get original songs regularly. Space Mountain, California Screamin', that pitiful San Fransisco song , the Boudin Bakery song, Seasons of the Vine, just to name a few. I just wish Epcot over at WDW would get its pavilion theme songs back...

hehe. I love those original Disney songs! When my family went to WDW my sister and I went on Carousel of Progress for the first time and we ran around the parks singing the theme song all day! We entertained quite a few people

Just to nitpick the terminology a little, Space Mountain and California Screamin' do not have original songs...they have original instrumental pieces. The main difference, obviously enough, is that you can't walk out of the attraction singing the latter sort. I think the last DLR ride to have an original song written for it was Rocket Rods ("Magic Highways"), and it was none too catchy compared to the classics like "Yo Ho" and "Miracles From Molecules."

Well, we've had original music written for the resort as recently as 2005, when Michael Giacchino rescored Space Mountain. And DCA, of course, had a variety of original music in it. But actual songs seem to be out of vogue at the moment.

Like the attractions they accompanied, those songs were the product of the studio structure, creative work environment and "group soul" at WED -- talented team players who'd worked together for years under the vision of an extremely creative studio boss.

Not to diminish today's talent, but you're simply not going to get the same soul by having the current WDI Exec. V.P. of the Month pick up the phone and call a freelance composer.

Soy-tainly!!! I'll put "We Go On" from Reflections of Earth up there with the classics.

Not sure if World of Color will have an original song - one that's not just a remix of or inspired by the TV show's theme song.

I sure come out of Indy "singing" the Indiana Jones theme about every time I get off of it.

Definitely gotta learn the correct terminology here. Animagosh-i-can't-remember-how-to-spell-it-but-it-woulda-been-easier-to-learn-than-to-type-this-out is asking for SONGS. Not scores. SONGS.

And he's absolutely right... there hasn't been any NEW songs to attractions in a good long while. We get the occasional piece written for a show like Fantasmic, Remember, Believe, Magical, etc. But if you also look at the rides they're giving us, they don't really ask for songs either.

The last attraction that has a song that I can think of is It's Tough To Be A Bug with that musical number at the end "We're pollinators! etc etc"

Yes, exactly. I LOVE the instrumental scores, and I do come off of Indy singing that score as well. But it would be nice to have a new, catchy, ultra-Disneylandish musical-number-with-lyrics in an attraction.

I agree that the recent rides don't ask for songs (or really, much of anything ) but what with "The Princess and the Frog" bringing back the Disney animated musical (hopefully), maybe the Disney musical ride can also make a comeback. (Not saying that it should be a Princess and the Frog ride, but a ride with an original musical score .)

I almost forgot about the ITTAB song. Somehow, I don't think that's going down in Disney history or have the same sort of breakout appeal as It's a Small World and Yo-Ho .

BTW, Magical's main theme was recycled. I heard it on TV in some EPCOT fountain show back in the 1990's.

OT - LOL regarding my screen name. That was hilarious .

It's also the name of my website. You should hear me trying to spell it out to people. A - N - I - M - A - G - U - S - U - R - R - E - A - L - DOT - COM. The other day, my own mother said to me, "It has two S's, right?" Fortunately, I'm finally going to change the site name soon, though my screen name will probably remain the same as I've gotten so used to it.
