New Disneyland-Freak needs some Education

I'm relatively new to the world of what my wife calls "Disneyland Freaks". I'm fascinated by Walt's story, and the park he built. I'm not very well educated however with the history.

Could you tell me of any DVDs, webpages, youtube videos, etc that a "Disneyland Freak" should be familiar with in order to call himself a "Disneyland Freak". I'm most interested in the planning and building of the park and it's attractions, imagineering, and of course Walt himself.

I watched a series of videos called "Building Walt's Dream" with Tony Baxter, and it was fascinating!

Yesterland - Disneyland History & Other Disney Park History is a good one for a look at past attractions. And youtube has some vids. Type in Disneyland history. Hope it helps.

Beat me to it. Yesterland is a great place to start. Just follow the links at random and you'll learn a ton of DL history in a short amount of time.

I suggest getting familiar with the Unofficial Disneyland Encylcopedia Unofficial Disneyland Encylcopedia. It's basically my Bible for all things Disneyland.

Tons and tons of great photos and anecdotal information, going back all the way to the planning and construction of the park in the 1950s, continuing on through the park as it is today, are at this great web site:
Daveland Vintage and Current Disneyland Photos
There are also many good blogs about Disneyland, its history and features over the years.

Bookwise, Disneyland: Past, Present, and Future currently available in the park, as well as Disneyland: The Nickel Tour, which is hard to come by and can be quite pricey, but a great read.

Re: New Disneyland-Freak needs some Education

Those videos you watched are only a small part of a two disc DVD called "Disneyland: Secrets, Stories & Magic" It is out of print and may be hard to find, but it is amazing. There is a full documentary on the first disc that is one of the most in depth documentaries about Disneyland I have ever seen. Highly recomended.

Anything you pick up and look at you'll learn something new. It's all fun, for me anyway. For Walt's story I really, really like Bob Thomas' biography and Neal Gabler's biography.

Re: New Disneyland-Freak needs some Education

Get the E-Ticket 3 CD set and all the back issues you can while they are still available. There is a HUGE amount of park history and often told by the greats themselves. I recommend all the above - but these magazines and CD's are a must for the true freak...

Even Tony Baxter has the complete set.

Re: New Disneyland-Freak needs some Education

There's also a few books by Jason Surrell (correct me if that's the wrong name) who wrote three very interesting books: Pirates of the Caribbean: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies, The Haunted Mansion: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies, and Imagineering at its Peak: The Disney Mountains. Also, there is a book credited to "The Imagineers", but I forgot the title.

Compass books at Downtown Disney sells many books related to the park, inlcuding offical and non-official.

My favorite:
Mouse Tales by David Koenig

So many interesting facts and well organized!!!
