Storybook Land Canal Boats - Not a 1955 Original?

Disneyland lists the Storybook Land Canal Boats as a "1955 Original" - one of the rides that was open from the park's very beginning.

These pictures were taken by my father in 1956, during the first trip he and my mother ever took to Disneyland. They appear to be taken from the Casey Jr. Circus Train:

I enhanced the color to bring out the detail (the original slides are very faded--I still have some touching up to do).

Any ideas why Storybook Land appears to be very much under construction almost a year after it "opened"? Is it, in fact, not an original, or was there something wrong with the ride that required a major overhaul?

    Curiouser and curiouser said Alice.

It was a 1955 original. However, it wasn't completed at all and was only a boat ride with some dirt hills to look at. Here is a link : http://www.disneyphenom.com/site/Dis...ide/index.html

Re: Storybook Land Canal Boats - Not a 1955 Original?

I think I can help. Basically, Storybook Land opened on July 17, 1955, without the theme or anything really to look at. I believe it was called Canal Boats of the World, and there was NOTHING to see. Then, on June 16, 1956, it reopened with all the scenes. So being as those pics were taken in May 1956, I'd say that it was currently under the transition from Canal Boats to Storybook.

Nice pictures DisneyTim. Amazing! A better era, no doubt.

Thank you all for the feedback. Mystery solved.

My biggest fear was that there was some horrible accident on opening day, so Disney had to refurbish the attraction and get clearance from DOSH.

Those are great pictures!!!! It was Canal Boats of the World on opening day and all they really did was go on the track and talk about what is coming up in the park. Then when the money was there it became the attraction we know today.

As it was officially called "Canal Boats of the World" throughout 1955 .. and then evolved into "Story Book Land" in 1956 .. I would not call it a "1955 original". But that's just me

I agree, but I guess Disney's justification is water . . . boats . . . close enough. We'll overlook the fact that entire sections of the ride weren't completed and the entire Storybook Land theming wasn't done.

Interesting story about Storybook. They didn't have enough money at the time to make it what it is today so it was just a nice little boat cruise.

When it opened, Walt's nickname for it was "the mud bank ride".

He hated the fact that it wasn't much to see when it opened.
