How much do you think it would cost to build Peter Pan today?

I am wondering because I want to have an idea of what to expect out of a 100 million dollar ride, like the Little Mermaid. Could we get another Indy ride for that kind of money? Does anyone have the numbers on the Winnie the Pooh ride in Tokyo?

    Wild guess; 80-85 million.

I don't have any solid numbers, so take this with several soccer-ball-sized grains of salt, but I suspect TLM will be intermediate in scale/scope/quality between Indy and Peter Pan.

I've heard from Eddie Sotto himself (), who worked on the project, that the ride didn't cost more than $100 million. Keep in mind, though, that that several years ago.

These days, $100 million is a nice, solid amount for a dark ride. Monsters Inc Ride & Go Seek was $100 mil, if I remember correctly, and that turned out very well. I would expect something of about that caliber for TLM.

I would bet not even that much. The ride is pretty basic, hardly even featuring real AAs and using few special effects. My guess would be $60 - 70 million.

Well .. first of all ... the dark rides in Fantasyland I consider "pint size" - All 5 of them: Snow White, Peter Pan, Pinnochio, Alice, Toad.

THEN .... rides like Indy, and Little Mermaid (said to be on the size and scale of Haunted Mansion) are in a another class of their own.

The last time Disneyland did something on the scale of Fantasyland's dark rides is Pooh in Critter Country. And from what I've read in the past ... it cost 30 million to retrofit the Country Bear Jamboree building into the dark ride .. and build out sets, and ride system.

    That's 2003 dollars.

So my guess .. to do Peter Pan today would probably be in that ball park.

Just for the hell of it:

2007 - Finding Nemo Subs (?anyone?)
    2005 - Buzz Lightyear (?anyone?)
    2003 - Pooh ($30m)
    1998 - New Tomorrowland ($100m)
    1995 - Indy ($100m)
    1989 - Splash Mountain ($90)
    1987 - Star Tours ($30m)
    1986 - Captain EO ($20m)
    1979 - Big Thunder ($15m)
    1977 - Space Mountain (entire complex $22m)
    1974 - America Sings ($8m)
    1967 - New Tomorrowland ($23m)

Assuming the building space was already there, and they just needed to build the ride inside and dress up the outside, I can't see Peter Pan costing more than $50M. It's small and relatively simple in terms of technology, ride system, audio, etc.

They did a top to bottom refurb of Pan earlier this year, which even included new ride vehicles. I doubt it was anything like 100 million.

Better question... would Disney actually spend that much to make Pan if it was built today or would we be presented with a cheaper alternative or a different character entirely?

Or, how awesomely could Peter Pan be built if you gave WDI a check for $100M and let them run with it?

I'd love to see a Pan ride where the ride vehicle was like a miniature version of Soarin'...moving along the overhead track, but with nothing between the passengers and the sets except dangling feet, and with the additional sensations of actually flying that could be created with subtle movements of the ride mechanism.

and...AA's...more capacity...longer ride...but keep the "feel" and spirit of the current ride.

Of course the problem is the current show building, not sure how that could be worked around...

Of course a good chunk of that went to a complete rehab and restoration of the subs, showbuilding, lagoon, track, everything before the new Nemo stuff went in.

Plus, a couple handfuls of projectors later and you get a really high number.

It's a fair point...but...I do wonder about a couple of things:
    a) If $172M (assuming it's accurate) really went to WDI, or whether it includes things like marketing expense or corporate overhead.
    b) How much better WDI would perform if:
    1) They were given absolutely firm budgets, as opposed to numbers that get continuously lowered by corporate bean counters
    2) They were allowed to work without executive interference during the entire development process.
