What is the Main Street Cinema "Mickey Initiative"?
So what's this all about? Well I read about this in Al's latest column, What is Tony Baxter actually doing to the Main Street Cinema right now? I dont really understand what this Mickey Mouse initiative is, can someone explain it to me with a little more detail.
Re: What is the Main Street Cinema "Mickey Initiative"?
Al Lutz is the first and only source that I've heard about this "Mickey Initiative," and I don't have any additional information.
The OC Register's Around Disney blog post earlier today seems to debunk this rumor:
Disneyland cinema closes for construction
Quote:
The
Main Street U.S.A. Cinema in
Disneyland is set to be closed until next month while crews install new floors.
No new changes are planned for the attraction when it reopens, said Suzi Brown, a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman. The cinema closed starting this week and is set to reopen Feb. 2.
The cinema, an original attraction from 1955, plays classic Mickey Mouse films on six different screens. Movies include “Steamboat Willie,” the first synchronized-sound cartoon created in 1928.
Emphasis added.

Wow, WTH was the point?
Edit: Ahhh, It would help to read the article. oops.
Re: What is the Main Street Cinema "Mickey Initiative"?
The last couple times I went, one of the projectors wasn't working. Maybe that's one of the reasons why.
Re: What is the Main Street Cinema "Mickey Initiative"?
My guess: given the company's push to return Mickey to his 1930s' mischievous and rascally personality (see Epic Mickey), they're now picking out a collection of old Mickey cartoons that highlight that side of him.
But, that's just a guess.
Re: What is the Main Street Cinema "Mickey Initiative"?
Is AL Lutz's Mickey Mouse Initiative column talking about Epic Mickey or Mickey in the parks?
And where can I read this column?

Al was talking about the Main Streeet Theater. But I'm pretty sure the Mickey Initiative is a company wide thing of which both Epic Mickey and the changes in the parks are parts. I know that a few years ago, not long after Iger took over, he asked a team of the senior executives and creatives to develop a plan to to reinvigorate Mickey. I believe the various projects that they came up with to make Mickey more popular and relevant are now refered to as the Mickey Mouse Initiative. Anyway, you can read Al's whole column on Miceage.com, it's a great article with some cool rumors about upcoming new rides for DL.

like fixing the roof at the magic eye theatre ;)
Re: What is the Main Street Cinema "Mickey Initiative"?
Why didn't Disney think of the Oswald Initiative? I mean, I haven't seen much of Oswald since Disney got him back from Universal.
Re: What is the Main Street Cinema "Mickey Initiative"?
This doesn't have to do with the Mickey Initiative (well maybe it does)...
But during the refurbishment, I would personally enjoy it if they turned the theater back into a... theater.
Personally I'm not a huge fan of the design right now. 6-8 movies playing simultaneously with only the sound for Steamboat Willie playing... I would enjoy being able to sit down and actually watch some of the other original Mickey cartoons with sound. Having all 8 playing at once is overwhelming.

Sarcasm? Maybe, but I'll treat this as a legitimate request for information.
Shortly after Disney regained the rights to Oswald, all exisiting Walt/Ub produced Oswald shorts were released on DVD as part of the Disney Treasure series.
Last year the 'Fortuosity' shop in Disneyland offered nice Oswald t-shirts at well over 30 bucks a pop. I wonder why they didn't sell?
I myself last week found and ordered an Oswald t-shirt from the Disney Store online for only $4.99! That's cheaper than paper towels.
Considering that perhaps less than 1% of the population has even heard of Oswald, I would say they've done more than expected.

Lucky Brand Jeans licensed Oswald for t-shirt sales for a while a few years ago. made me laugh cause no one knew who he was, jut a Lucky mascot! :))
Re: What is the Main Street Cinema "Mickey Initiative"?
The Mickey Initiative also includes airing classic Mickey cartoons (Mickey and the Seal, Lonesome Ghosts) on Disney Channels, as well as repurposing some into new, more "extreme" versions. I've seen the "extreme" version of Goofy's skiing cartoon on Disney XD, and know that regular, unaltered versions of the classic ones have aired, as well.
Re: What is the Main Street Cinema "Mickey Initiative"?
A thought: could Disney be installing digital projectors in the Cinema? Could improve the images, draw better crowds.
