Big Thunder Mtn RR Useless Information

    Ahoy all,

Yes I am a Disneyland geek. I love the park. I go about 3-4 times a month. And I like to notice the little things.

Awhile ago I was eating at Rancho de Zocale with my Dad. We both love Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. We watched the trains come and go. I like to notice the names of the engines. I had previously written a bunch of them down while waiting to ride but had missed some. This time we got to see the engines go by many times and I filled in the blanks of my list. Here are all the engines and their numbers:

    #1 I B HEARTY
    #2 I M BRAVE
    #3 I M FEARLESS
    #4 U B BOLD
    #5 U R DARING
    #6 U R COURAGEOUS
    #7 I M LOCO

This past week after we rode BTMRR I asked the CM working the attraction about the engines. He told me #2 is the one from the accident. He said it will be retired until 2010 because that year the youngest rider that was on that train will be 18. I thought that was interesting. The #6 engine is the one that replaced the #2.

So, watch for the engine names when you are nearby or waiting to ride. It's fun :-)

    Thanks for reading,

    Aprille :-)

Thanks for that. I've always wondered the names and the number of trains.

Thanks for the info. I wonder why they retired #2 until the youngest rider is 18. Possible legal thing or am I missing something?

Very helpful to know if you are taking the VMK tour. It's one of the questions - name one of the trains.

Thanks for those, I've seen 1 or 2 of them while eating at Rancho de Zocale. They are pretty clever! But I have one question, how did you figure out #2's name if it is retired? Did you just ask a CM?

Re: Big Thunder Mtn RR Useless Information

Actually I had been writing the names down for about 2 years just for fun. So, I had the name but not the number. And that day when we saw so many engines go by it was process of elimination and the CM confirmed it.

The accident was when someone died on the attraction in Sept 2003. So, there must be something legal about the engine being retired until the youngest rider turns 18.

Many statute of limitations do not begin until a potential injured party reaches adulthood, so the train is still potential evidence for potential future litigation. It' in Disney's best interest to preserve it (and probably is under court order to do so anyway) until such time as the stature of limitations expire.

The CM was wrong there is no longer a Loco #2. After the accident they decided not to make another Loco #2 as a form of respect. That is why there is #7 I.M. Loco now ... there are only 6 Trains for Thunder 5 at the attraction and one that is being refurbished

Karnever. I don't really understand what you are saying. Do you mean that they demolished #2 because of the accident and it will never return? Why would the CM say it was retired until 2010 if it was not coming back? You say refurbished. So, you mean it will come back in some other form? I guess we never know what is gone for good until it returns at DLR. And you think that #7 is what replaced #2? That makes sense because it is the latest number. But I had rarely seen UR Courageous(#6) and that's why I asked the CM. You think he is mistaken? Now I am really confused.

It probably has something to do with there being minors on the train, as mentioned - Parents or legal guardians can enter into a financial settlement with Disney on their behalf, but there might be a way for them to reopen the issue when they turn 18 and are legally adults.

If I was in Disney's legal department, those train cars and any physical evidence removed from the ride is still potentially evidence. I'd stick all the cars of Train #2 on pallets, wrap them in plastic, and stick them on the top rack in a 'dead storage' warehouse (no pun intended) somewhere in the Arizona desert. Because it looks really bad if they ask for a piece of physical evidence, and you destroyed it.

But the Park still needs 6 trains to run the attraction, so you have them build a new train out of spare parts, and get a set of new car chassis welded up if you don't have them on hand.
