I still think a full blown side street parallel to Main would be cool.

The arcade sounds like what they have at Disneyland Paris. If you scroll down this page about halfway they talk about the Liberty Arcade, and it looks pretty nice.

Plus it provides backdoor access to every merchant on the street. More access to shops = more $ = happier accountants.

After seeing the pics of the arcade I have no objection to it except that I'd rather have management spend the money on something a little more important before they decided to build this. It doesn't seem as important as other things they could do around the parks right now.

The west side of Main Street is currently used more for guest control. That side has been considered for quite a while.
Both sides have been used, not because they want to, but because the DL shows, and resulting crowds, are such a crowd control nightmare now, they have to do it to avoid real problems.
But, having guests traveling through those areas just showed guests the horrible mess (and smell) of many of the backstage areas. It also caused problems with CM access to areas they need to stock and maintain during those periods.
I personally am only a fan of the Arcade idea if they close each main street shop up.
Yes. Close Main Street up. That's a great idea. Cut off Disneyland's main source of merchandise profits. I'm sure that'll be a big hit with marketing.

I didn't say close main street, I SAID close each main street shop up. Each shop is connected. It's like one huge shop. I meant make each shop individual again...
Ohh, close in each shop! See, I think (at least it feels like) they opened them all up so you can flow through, so reclosing them off would work.
Closing up means to go out of business where as closing in would better refer to detaching the individual stores.
