Maybe Big Thunder has the same sort of problems Space Mtn has because it's an older ride. They didn't think that SM was fixable so they decided to replace it. I'm wondering if BTM could use a rebuild in light of the accidents.
I don't know, just thinking 'out loud'.
If they did rebuild it (I'm not talking about getting rid of the ride...) they could add a couple of new elements to keep things new and exciting.
I'd love to see the ride take one extra turn to go through one of the two tunnels across Big Thunder Trail, around by Cascade falls and back again. That would be neat. Why not? It's just sitting there.

Space opened in 1977........BTM in 1979.....

If they do decide to rebuild I would hope they would go all out and build the multi-faceted Mesa Mountain(with Big Thunder and a Pirate type ride underneath it)

My understanding that Space Mt. had two separate issues...

    1) track was getting old and needed some minor repairs.

    2) the 1970s technology was to build a web of small supports to attach the tracks to. Pictures of Space Mt shows this. The result was people that didn't listen to the "keep hands in car" could/did break fingers when they held their hands up.

Cure was to rip out all the track and supports and totally rebuild with much more clearence.

BTMRR has the clearence.... no need to replace.

    HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

    minor repairs?

    (insert more obnoxious laughter)

The damned thing was shearing itself apart

Clearance wasn't an issue for Space Mountain - it all LOOKS super close, especially with the lights on, but even WAAAAY back in them thar 1970s, engineers had such thing as a clearance envelope.

I would hope so, I always put my hands up! But I didn't they have to widen some of the tunnels on Matterhorn so people couldn't break their fingers????

    Something NEW please?

Would I like to see an improved Big Thunder? Yes, of course.

What I'd rather see is a new attraction in the Ranch section of Frontierland that is basically not used for anything useful. That'd be an investment that I'd like to see!

no, space mountain had aged horribly by the time they took it down for the big refurb. all the effects were cheesy. BTM is fine.

Big Thunder doesn't need to be rebuilt but added effects would be nice. Oh, and rebuild the Rainbow Mountain track trestle that was detroyed during the rains, please.

Really? I hadn't heard that. Interesting.

How long was Big Thunder down for? Was it longer than the Space Mtn rebuild?

They did in fact relay the track however I would still like to see a refurb on a majority of those animatronics on the hills...and especially the falling rocks in the major ascent. If we can replace Madame Leoda's head in HMH why not replace rocks with superior effects? Simple updates, new lighting, remastered music tracks- why not?

Given it's wonderful history to date, I personally think this would be a great opportunity to open up the land area out there and do away with Big Thunder and do the Frontierland (or Fantasyland for that matter) expansion and give us 2 new E ticket rides, some new entertainment offerings, shops, restaurants and maybe some "smaller" type rides.
But wait, I think this was already discussed as a long-term goal.
