Disneyland's Future link from MS to TL

It was the late 1950's when WED cooked up the idea of Edison Square. It would have taken up the backstage space between Main Street and Tomorrowland.

The design of the area would comprise the architectural styles and icons of New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Boston,St. Louis, and San Francisco. The concept was to show the passing of the 'old' of the 19th Century to the 'new' of the early 20th Century.

What do you guys think? Personally I think it would be a great transition into TL, thematically speaking.

I agree, it would have worked nicely. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a little influence from that that still ends up in the new arcade. A lot of the concepts also ended up influencing other attractions including becoming part of the Carousel of Progress.

Ideas like this would certainly justify the transitioning of alot of the backstage area from ground level to something more subterranean.

Space Mt. took up the space for the proposed Edison Square (and numerous other designs for the same area), so I don't think it will happen. I wish they would put another street in though.

Also, I don't think they intend to attach Main Street to Tomorrowland. They just want to run Parallel to Main Street,

There is definitely plenty of available space between Space Mountain and Main Street. I hear this many times as an excuse for any work in the area.. "That area is used for Parade Staging/Prep and Float Loading." Im sure that they could manage.. ha

Disney could easily (or not) relocate what currently occupies that backstage area..

      CM Restrooms
      CM Computer Lab
      First Aid
      Merchandise Stock Rooms
      Character Break Area
      Storage Units

I believe this idea evolved into Liberty Square at MK.

Have them occupy the top floors of the buildings, same as Main Street.

    Problem solved.

It's not just that the area is used to house all those back stage functions. But the fact that Space Mountain is LOOMING over that area. It just wouldn't work thematically at all. It would be nice to have Edison Square, but not without a giant white dome virtually on top of you. Hence the reason for the covered arcade.

That could be solved. When I ran my modelling tests, the top of Space was hidden on a parallel road.

The problem is parade staging. At least, when I gave my suggestion (Main Street in my sig) thats what people told me my reason was unfeasable for. lol

And you're right. In fact this idea is the same breed as Little China Town, Hollywoodland, and Liberty Square.

For this adaptation, Edison Square would purly be an alternate route to the plazza; no attractions, no shops.

from when I was working in the park, I can remember there being enough space to add a small themed acess route. the only thing that would have to be relocated is the CM dinning hall. But parade staging is still an issue.

Mehh... I think you're thinking of Liberty Street. Different street.

Man, there were a lot of streets that we never got.

All of those streets were for the same location. Each batch of Imagineers were trying to find the project that would get the greenlight for the area East of Main Street. Amazing they never got it, but good for any fan of Space Mountain.

Remember that those parade floats are parked out there for half the day...

TrevorD do you have images from those CAD models that you can upload?

If Disney builds an access way that's accessible during parade hours (which is what they want) they are either going to have to go UP or down. Up, doesn't really make sense- Main St from turn of the century America doesn't really have elevated interior bridges...

Expect something that goes underground, has an incredible mural, and maybe some audio about the History of the US and how it's brought us to Tomorrow. They don't want to be too evasive now do they?

    EDIT:
It's too bad that Tomorrowland isn't DLP's Discoveryland. If that was the case then the possibilities would be almost endless...

I completely disagree, there is almost zero chance that the new arcade will go underground, that makes no sense at all. That would almost make the whole thing pointless because it would cause huge bottlenecks at each end of the arcade. It would also be extremely expensive, feel strange and out of theme, and have no real need to be that way. I expect they'll build a nice covered walkway at ground level about 12 feet wide and a cheap 2 story metal building with a nice facade on the arcade side which will house the storage and CM uses that will need to be relocated. There will still be plenty of space for parade stagging.

Hmm, sorry that was misleading. They were scale hand sketches with angles drawn in, not proper CAD models. The reason I said modelling is because that is what we would call it in our Engineering Fundamentals class.

    Models are availible though.
