I think that's the same time they were "color coded," and that's why none of us ever noticed it before. I remember seeing the show around that time and thinking the plumage had changed. Myself, I think the new coloration is a little too bright and cartoony.

Well, not really. Maybe they did several years before. The current colors are similar to the colors prior to the most recent refurb.

BUT LOOK at the pictures, they don't match the colors mentioned in the OP:

Jose is actually Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, and Blue

Fritz is just White and a few shades of Red - not really any black or yellow/gold

Pierre, yes, does have red, white, and a couple shades blue, so that is the only one that matches

Michael is Blue, Yellow, White, and a few shades of Green

You caught that too! So how old are those pictures? Those match more closely what I remember as a kid. I still think the color coding is a new thing.

I never paid attention to that detail. But I believe the reason I personally never connected it, has to do with the low lighting effects and how much is going on at any given time. It easily distracts you from taking notice of little stuff like that!
I wonder if the birds have ALWAYS been those colors, or were they plussed sometime after the barker bird was removed from outside? Way cool! Way to go on that hidden tiki fact.

Yeah, I noticed that in the pictures it's not as easy to tell that there are dominant colors. But I think it's the angle that the picture is taken. Next time you go, look at the birds. The heaviest concentration of colors that tie to their country of origin are on their backs and bodies. These pics are taken shooting up toward their heads and breasts.

That said, when you're there in person, you'll see that it's pretty easy to tell Jose is intended to be predominantly red, green and white...Fritz is intended to predominantly be red...and Pierre is most obvious with his red, white and blue. Michael is the hardest to tell, though green comes across strongest. And to be honest i was confused last night because I always thought Michael was British...so the green didn't make any sense. Then, I got home and looked at Wiki and saw that Michael is Irish...which jives with the green.

I'm going to go back this weekend, and I'm hoping Maynard is working the attraction so I can ask him more about it.

And BTW, here's what Wiki says, not that Wiki is infallible:

"José" is red, white and green and speaks with a Mexican accent, voiced by Wally Boag; "Michael" is white and green with an Irish brogue, voiced by Fulton Burley; "Pierre" is blue, white and red, and has a French accent courtesy of the voice talents of Ernie Newton while red, black and white "Fritz" has a German accent provided by Thurl Ravenscroft, who also voices Hawaiian god "Tangaroa" near the attraction's entrance."

WONDERFUL find! These are the sort of little details that warm the heart of this long- old-time Disney fan.

Not sure when the colors were changed, but here is a photo of Walt with Jose before the country color coordination.
