Re: The Long-Forgotten Haunted Mansion Effect Thread 7: Further Realms of Fright

Thanks so much for posting that ride thru, HBG! It's really amazing to hear all the different effects that have long been taken out of the soundtrack. It's a shame that so much of the creepy/dark edge of the Haunted Mansion has been taken out. Especially so much of the original audio has been removed from WDW's mansion (we have surround sound of the corridor screams, but sadly all of the individual door sounds are gone like "Let me out of here!", the knob rattling and breathing, the moaning, the man banging, and the growling, and of course the replacement of the new singers). As much as I love that the WDW mansion has been spruced up, I just find many of these audio changes ridiculous. They might as well replace Paul or Eleanor's narration for all I care since they've dickered around and removed or changed so much audio.

Anyway, here's a little sound file I made. I used the GGG singers track from the newest HM CD and mixed them together with the pop up screams to be timed. Unforunately I only have five of the pop up screams from the attic/ graveyard and I used the screaming woman as there's proof now of that sound being used for a pop up.

Good work! I actually posted something like this a few months ago but yours turned out much better.

After now just listening to one of Anazgnos tracks of the graveyard, I might of been wrong about there being no bicycle-rider audio. Not sure about this, but if you listen to Track 14 just after the "...come out to socialize" lyric you hear the pop-up vocal (kinda impossible to describe it) and then a high-pitched scream. I first thought this was actually the girls you can hear screaming at certain points on the tape, but now I'm thinking it's really a bit too loud to really be coming from them and has a definate resemblance to the shriek heard on the LP. So maybe the DL version of the HM got the bicycle-rider audio for a time there after all? Or maybe it's all in my imagination...

    I added a COD mini-file.

The idea that there are ghostly laughs, etc., in the Load area is implied by the old Cheers thing, "Woody rides the HM," although obviously that depiction of the HM takes many liberties.

Speaking of that HM Cheers skit, I think I've mentioned before that it is literally the only HM promo film, TV commercial, TV special—anything that purports to show you the ride in operation—which makes zero use of the stock interior footage from 1969. (I'm not counting things like the Sandy Duncan special or the Elvira commercial, which are not supposed to be depictions of the ride per se.)

What about the Osmonds footage from 1970? That certainly was a promo. It's where the stock footage came from.

The stock footage came before the Osmonds special.

Speaking of which, you do hear a witchy cackle in the load area during the Osmonds special.

Obviously the backstage footage was done earlier, but it's entirely possible that the ride footage, with and without the people, was filmed all at the same time in 1969, but not shown until 1970.

The cackle on the Osmonds footage in the load area seems different from the one in the CoD on the tape - at least to me.

The "swinging wake" spiel between Leota and the ballroom is absent on the ridethrough tape, but it sounds like you can slightly hear it coming from an adjacent car, so perhaps it just failed to pickup in the rider's doombuggy.

    Yes, it is different.

The Osmonds show probably was not filmed very long before it aired in March 1970, and almost certainly it was not done in 1969. The weather was quite cool. In the filming done for the show (i.e., excluding stock footage like the montage during the "It's a Small World" marching band sequence), everyone everywhere is wearing jackets and sweaters, and the trees on Main Street are pretty bare, but there are no Christmas decorations to be seen anywhere. It appears to be post-Christmas wintertime.

The show made extensive use of the now-familiar WED pre-opening footage, very possibly the first use of this footage for commercial purposes. It's intercut with new footage shot specifically for the show. This new film soon became stock footage itself in future commercial releases, like the 8mm souvenir reels sold at the parks. Some of those consist of the old WED stuff contaminated with Osmonds footage, and some are Osmonds-free.

I noticed that too, but I don't attach much significance to it. A typical sound system flake-out. It's also possible that the taper was holding the recorder outside the doombuggy at that point, pointing the condenser mic toward Leota, etc., so as to get the Séance circle audio better.

I just knew I had seen the 8mm film with glimpses of the Osmonds in it! I thought perhaps I had imagined it. I think my copy shows them (mainly their backs, side views, etc.) in a few shots. 99% positive one version shows the shot of them going down the portrait hall towards the busts. No close-ups, no changing portraits. Time to dig out the old projector and see which version I have.

DB.com has one without the Osmonds contamination on this page, towards the bottom.

There's one with Osmonds contamination currently on Youtube:

Thanks for digging that up. At least now I know it was not my imaginiation! However, I now know this is not the one I have at home. It doesn't have that CM or all those people in line at the beginning. I probably have the plain vanilla version that DB.com has.
