Is it today, the 9th - or the 12th? I forget what the final outcome was...

It's both/and. The official opening day was the 12th (a Tuesday), but Marc Davis just decided to open it early, presumably to get in one more weekend. "Summer's almost over; why waste a perfectly good Saturday and Sunday if the thing is ready? Open it." Something like that.

I can't help but wonder if some of the others on the team were a little miffed. The HHG gag (the very one we've been discussing) was iffy at best, probably jury-rigged, and they had to go to their backup effect when the park opened on Tuesday. And of course, they also knew that the Hatbox Ghost wasn't performing as planned.

So it actually opened on the 9th, but the official opening was the 12th, but the opening on the 9th was advertised in the papers, so it can't really be called a soft opening in the usual sense, so...what label do we attach to these two dates? Beats me. All I know is that it provides an excuse for two parties instead of one, so I'm good with it.

Our friend the skull is at the bottom of the plaque on the HM entrance gates. The leering devil face is at the top.

    Yup.

I extracted "Skull Rock" from the most insanely high-rez photo of the plaque skull...

Yeah, coloring those would ruin the effect. the color does not come in until the cash registers ring, uh, I mean Dorothy opens the door.

Wow, never saw it in such great detail before. In fact, I'm not even certain I ever noticed the little skull - just the devil on the top.

And notice that he has a tear in his eye! Something to do with news from Orlando, perhaps? No no, we're not going to go there again.

Okay, this is just about as off-the-wall as it gets, folks. I was looking at an absurd close-up of the skull's eye and wondering why it looked kind of familiar. Then it hit me. It reminded me of an album cover. Here they are, side by side. Like I say, off the wall.

Hmmp. Turns out the plaque skull's eye is freakishly like Meddle's ear.

(That's a great old Pink Floyd album, fyi)

You know what I just noticed? That skull has BANGS.

    You think it's a comb-over?
