All I know is that it's from the east coast and that it was purchased at an estate sale.

The mold itself seems too well done to be a fan made and I've never been able to find pictures of any of the Disney molds to make a comparison, but figured I'd ask if anyone has any thoughts on this banshee mold.
Well, pictures of the original molds do exist, and that doesn't look like one, but I suppose it's possible they have redesigned the molds themselves, using synthetic materials newer and better than what they had in 1969, so I wouldn't say it's impossible. But the banshee heads were full heads, not just faces, and they molded both halves at the same time, so there ought to be a matching mold for the backside of the head if this really is a HM banshee.

A couple of very nice articles on the HM are out there, HERE and HERE.

(Hat Tip to MasterGracey for the second one. We miss ya around here, MG.)

From the second article it sounds like they initially set up a self-guided Halloween haunt-style walkthrough. I'd read that a HM walkthrough would be guided by a tour guide (not unusual for DL, see Jungle Cruise). Maybe after this test they added the tour guide idea before abandoning walking altogether.

I've not heard of a self-guided walk-through before. Only the version with a tour guide escorting about 20 people at a time through each room.

"Il faut moult rire" (One must laugh a lot) sounds like "Il faut mourir" (one must die).

"Enterées" (people who are buried) instead of "entrées"

"Choux-pleurs" (sweet tears) instead of "Choux-fleur" (cauliflower)

I assume that "veuf à la morgue" (widow at the morgue)is a play on "boeuf à la mode" (pot roast).

"Homme de terre en robe de chantre" (Golem in a priest's robe) is a play on "Pomme de terre en robe des champs" (baked potato in a jacket).

    Great find!

Oooo. I hope you can continue when you've got a few moments to spare. I could do some rough translating, but I'd miss all of the puns.

Re: The Long-Forgotten Haunted Mansion Effect Thread 7: Further Realms of Fright

On a wildly unrelated note, I clicked my way over to the Disney Parks Blog earlier today. Their blog pages have been displaying a selection of Disney Halloween-appropriate cover photos in the spirit of the season. Plenty of Mansion, Manor and Tower of Terror images. All nice, but nothing we've never really seen before. That is, until this little gem popped up for me this morning:

    Name: Halloween18.jpg

Size: 108.0 KB

. . . I have basically no idea what to think about it. The art, to me, looks to contemporary to have been used in the creation of the original attraction, though not contemporary enough to make me think it's something they still plan on building (IE: Not for Mystic Manor). It must be some abandoned concept for . . . something. Looks very stylistically reminiscent of 80's/90's Imagineering Concept Art to me . . . and surely you can see why it seems Mansiony enough (even Museum of the Weird enough) that I would feel the urge to share it here.

Part of me seems to recall that when the Tokyo Mansion was in development there was talk of taking a radically different approach to their attraction . . . maybe it has something to do with that? I can't find anything else on it around the 'net. It really is a confusing piece . . . I'm not sure we've seen anything like it before.

Wow. Yeah, I agree with everything you've said. It looks like a recreation of a nightmare, very surrealistic, not something you would actually see in our space-time continuum. You have to figure out where a nightmare might be visualized.

Your description reminds me of GDT's quote about his HM movie:

"The movie I see in my head of 'Haunted Mansion' is not, I believe, what everyone is imagining it to be. It's not just a regular world with a haunted mansion plopped in the middle. I really am thinking of a movie that has a heightened reality."

Sounds like the exact opposite of PLQ.

When one hovers over the photo in the Disney Parks Blog, text appears reading
'Magic Kingdom Park, The Haunted Mansion'.
