Re: DCA World of Color/Mermaid - overhyped?

I've seen a lot of the early testing for WoC and I got to admit, I actually look forward to seeing it. I think it is getting buzz and hype that it deserves, and this will be a great show for everyone. I even heard there will some dramatic moments in it.

Sadly, that is exactly what is going to happen.

Re: DCA World of Color/Mermaid - overhyped?

For what it's worth, I have a friend who has seen a run through of the show and he said it was good, but lacks the emotional punch of F!. I still get a lump in my throat when I see all my favorite good guys on the Mark Twain at the end so I can understand how WoC might not be able to match that.

Rather than the predicted complaints over getting a good spot for the show, I think the main complaints over the summer (when most APs are blocked out) will be over almost all of Paradise Pier being closed 2 hours before the rest of the park.

I'm keeping my hopes low only because dark rides arent what they used to be. Wouldnt surprise me at all if TLM becomes another Monsters Inc. A bland dark ride through of the film where you encounter animatronics that turn slightly from side-to-side and whose mouths dont even move!

I so hope it's not! But you're right... we haven't had a good dark ride since Roger Rabbit.

This is pretty much what I'm expecting, though I would love to be proven wrong. When I first heard about this ride, I was hoping that it would be a flume type dark ride like POTC with maybe a drop or 2 so that there is at least a tiny sliver of "thrill" to the ride. I mean, water, mermaids, scenes above and below water... to me, a flume ride seems like a no-brainer. I know that land size is a concern, but i think it would've been possible. Right now, I am expecting a big version of a Fantasyland dark ride.

As for World of Color, I will remain indifferent until I actually see it. Assuming that I actually GET to see it when I visit Disneyland in late July/early August. I realize that all Disney shows are over the top to an extent - that's the point - but the music that plays on Disneyland's WOC page is just too much.

Exactly the thought I had in my head when I saw that video posted AGAIN, but I don't have the cajones to share how much I REALLY hate that video.

    Indiana Jones?

I am keeping my standards slightly higher than Monsters Inc. I do expect them to use animatronics at least half as fluid as the ones in Sindbad's Storybook Yoyages.

I know that Indiana Jones is in the dark and technically, that classifies as a dark ride, but my meaning is the dark rides of the kid-friendly nature.

I still think Alice in Wonderland at DL is the best old fashioned dark ride at ANY of the Disney parks around the world.

Re: DCA World of Color/Mermaid - overhyped?

Sorry for digging up an older thread, but it seemed silly to start a new one. I'm getting more and more concerned about Mermaid, and the quality of work they may or may not be putting into it. Now mind you, I'm extremely behind on the project tracker (like 3 months worth), so perhaps this has been discussed to death already, but I keep hearing rumors that the attraction isn't going to be nearly as spectacular as Al and other bloggers, and many many fans seems to think.

I believe it was Al, or maybe Honor Hunter, who had been saying this would be a family e-ticket with lots of AAs. More recently on other sites there are some well respected insiders (two in particular on a certain MAGICal site) that have held firm to it being a D level attraction, possibly even lower. These aren't any yahoos either, they know what they're talking about. Now, I don't feel thrills make an E-ticket, and ride length isn't my biggest concern either. There are a number of great E's that are a bit short, though I admit they are usually thrill rides. Journey to the Center of the Earth comes to mind (gorgeous darkride with a thrill finale). What concerns me is that one of the insiders, Lee, is saying that the attraction will not have advanced AAs, like A100s, at all. I'm blindsided by this, and the fact that he's making it sound only slightly better that the traditional Fantasyland dark rides. I like those rides a lot, but the tech and skill WDI has is far beyond that now. I really expected to see something like the Mushroom Forest scene on JttCotE for this ride, tons of full AAs, effects, and intricate set designs. Now it sounds similar to Roger Rabbit quality. I'm not trying to be hyperbolic, Lee seriously said that Mermaid would be an E only if you consider Pooh to be an E.

I could possibly get past this and enjoy the attraction for whatever it may be, but it seemed like a lot was riding on Mermaid. That it was to be a focal point of WDI style and substance for Paradise Pier. More than that, whenever some element of the Pier makeover that seemed important from a theme stand point was cut/scaled back/put off to "other phases" (i.e. the nice way of saying canceled), the reasoning given by both fans and some with inside sources was that the budgets have to be pulled from some projects and element to ensure that Mermaid and Cars Land were of the highest quality possible. So, what happened?? The Pier loses a plethora of details, the Screamin queue, the carousel, Fun Wheel queue, Jellyfish, the Zephyr queue, all that and more are left untouched and ugly, all so Mermaid can... be a nice D-ticket with ok AAs (If those insiders are to be believed, and they aren't often wrong. The one time I can think of when they were off the mark early on is when MK's Space Mountain refurb actually got worse).

Maybe I was naive before and I bought into the early hype and rumors, but it excited me to hear about immersive sets, advanced AAs (a separate AA for Ariel's hair even), and a quality level similar to HM or Phantom Manor. If Mermaid doesn't turn out to be the best dark ride it can be, well, I want my Fun Wheel boardwalk back.

Amazing how these near-verbatim quotes defending the then-under-construction DCA get reincarnated almost a decade later by different posters defending different DLR projects!

The reality is that speculation about the quality of any new DLR project is healthy, rational, warranted and well earned by Disney's performance in the last two decades.

The message of WDI's and TDA's work for the last twenty years is clear: hope for the best, but be prepared for possible disappointment.
