No one's saying you can give negitive remarks if you truly don't like it, but it isn't very helpful if you don't have something to suggest. Every time I think someone's work can be improved (and don't get me wrong, we're all striving to do better - myself chief among them) instead of saying that it's a terrible picture, I suggest a tip or trick that I know of that they didn't. Am I a real photographer? I would say so. I can see differences in pictures from one photographer to the next. It's a freedom of expression (and ease of access to cameras nowadays) which makes threads of people showing off pictures so commonplace. It's like the age-old proverb says.. "you'll catch more flies with honey than vinegar". Anyway, time to step off the soapbox...

doppio - nice new batch of pictures! I particularly like the dynamic contrast of light & dark in the pictures to further deepen the "mood". I had a feeling you shot them in color. What did you use to mix down to B&W, if I may ask? Whenever I do it I use the level mixer in lightroom - super easy & really cool to be able to make any color channel light or dark.

Nice photos! You really have an eye!

I have an old Pentax K1000 that I use to shoot black and white with. I was able to find a few places that developed in actual black and white but it was getting harder and harder since every one was doing sepia.

I should get it out again and play with it.

I have found critiques are not taken well online. This is not a photography class and even in class when critiques are given they are often hard to take by some. I don't believe these were posted with a learning objective in mind. I have found it's often better not to comment unless somebody is asking for opinions.

I just play around with photoshop. Anisotropic and diffuse glow are some of my favorite filters. I also manually adjust brightness/contrast. Basically I just mess around until I'm satisfied.

Re: The Beauty of Black and White

I'm sure most of us aren't photo critics, and we may not have taken a photo class in school either. On the other hand, we know what we like and that's all that matters to us! I appreciate when people post their pics on MC and I could care less if they're blurry or unprofessional. It takes work to take them and work to upload them here.

But, there's no reason to be mean spirited. We were given a "gift" of his pictures and it was rude to belittle him especially when he wasn't asking for our opinion.

Re: The Beauty of Black and White

I'm going to have to dive into my pictures and try my hand at making some B&W pictures. I have a few that I think will look really cool in black & white. The only thing is I have to see if I have time for it, which I don't have much of lately.
