The OCRegister is reporting that Pixar Pop-Ups shows will begin January 7:

Disney California Adventure will put its parade on hiatus for most of next year as crews work on major construction projects in the $1 billion park makeover.

The final Pixar Play Parade is set for Jan. 3. The parade will return in November, said John McClintock, a Disneyland Resort spokesman.

In the parade’s place, Disney will run mini, roaming shows, called Pixar Pop-Ups. The pop-up shows will be based on Pixar movies and use characters and items from the parade.

The first show, based on “The Incredibles,” is set to begin Jan. 7. The other shows are based on “Monsters Inc.” and the “Toy Story” movies. They will begin Jan. 21 and Feb. 4, but Disney has yet to announce which one will begin first.

Re: Disney California Adventure Project Tracker X

WoC took a rather large dump last night. I know it's been having problems, but this was just bad. The part just before the climax in the "Colors of the Wind" segment, where the orange and violet fountains chase each other across the platforms, was completely dry. The LED rings were all lighting up in sync, but no water. The jets didn't come back on until the giant cymbal crash just after that crescendo.

It was just weird. As if that whole cue was altered to exclude the fountains. And I say that because the fountains cut out and came back on at two very distinctive beats.

Like I said, I know it's been having problems and they're doing a great job fixing what needs to get done, but I can't help but express how floored I was. Also, someone might have mentioned this and I just haven't seen it, but MFW wasn't part of the show this time, either. The LED's seemed to have been shut off or quit working because they weren't on the whole evening. Pre and post-WoC. Could it be the weather?

Yes. The rain has been known to mess with MFW's lighting package. Someone stated that we won't see it back in WOC until next month. In fact, the rain messing with MFW's lights has been an issue even before they started using the wheel in the show.

I'm pretty sure the weather is responsible for the faulty lighting in MFW. This usually happens every time it rains.

Disney Parks Blog has a new post about New Years Eve Festivities at the parks, featuring some new entertainment in DCA!

At Disney California Adventure, where park hours are extended to 1 a.m., there will be special entertainment along the Paradise Pier boardwalk and a “fountains and fireworks” countdown to midnight in Paradise Park, immediately followed by the first “World of Color” show of 2011. (Earlier New Year’s Eve performances of “World of Color” will take place at 8 and 9:15 p.m.) In Hollywood Pictures Backlot, revelers on the grid in “ElecTRONica” will heat up throughout the night and into the new year.

Re: Disney California Adventure Project Tracker X

A lot of updates, as per information in some new LA Times and OC Register articles:

    New main entry turnstiles
Details: The current main entry turnstiles to Disney's California Adventure and the CALIFORNIA letters will be removed and new turnstiles/gate styled after Los Angeles' Pan Pacific Auditorium will be constructed in the current location of the CALIFORNIA letters.
Project Status: To begin early 2011.
    Open Date: August 29, 2011.
    CALIFORNIA letter removal
Details: The DisneyParks Blog announced on December 9 that the removal of the CALIFORNIA letters would be removed starting January 4, 2011.
Project Status: To begin January 4, 2011.
    Completion Date: Early 2011.

    New facades, shops and dining
Details: A new Main Street-esque street will house new shops and dining, replacing the tile murals, restrooms, lockers, and Guest Services/AP Processing buildings. The new shop facades will feature nods to Walt Disney's rich life history on shop windows, including "Elias & Co. Dept. Store" and "Oswald’s Gas & Oil." For more information, see this post.
Project Status: Demolition of murals and other original Sunshine Plaza theming began in 2010. Work on retheming the buildings will begin in 2011.
    Open Date: By spring/summer 2012
Baker's Field Bakery, Bur-r-r Bank Bakery, and Engine-Ears Toys closing
Details: The shops and restaurants on Sunshine Plaza's west side will close to be reworked and renamed to fit the new Buena Vista Street theme.
Project Status: Shops and dining close July 31, 2011
    Open Date: By spring/summer 2012

Performance Corridor closure & Pixar Play Parade hiatus
Details: Due to construction, DCA's performance corridor will be closed in varying degrees throughout 2011, including a complete closure of a large section of the thoroughfare starting in June 2011. Due to this, the Pixar Play Parade will be on hiatus for much of the year. Smaller "pop-up" shows will be used to offer entertainment during the parade's hiatus.
Project Status: Starting January 4, construction walls in Sunshine Plaza will be extended further, resulting in a tighter walkway through the park's entrance plaza. The Pixar Play Parade will go on hiatus January 4, which is expected to last until November. During this time, smaller "Pixar Pop-Up" shows will entertain guests elsewhere in the park in lieu of a full parade.

Playhouse Disney — Live on Stage! retheme
B]Details:[/B] Playhouse Disney will close and be re-named "Disney Junior – Live on Stage" with new shows.
Project Status: Playhouse Disney closes January 23, 20011
Open Date: Disney Junior opens spring 2011

Walt Disney Imagineering Blue Sky Cellar: Imagineering the Future - New Exhibit
Details: Blue Sky Cellar preview center will close to change exhibits with a more in-depth preview of the upcoming Little Mermaid attraction.
Project Status: Expect a brief closure in January before the Jan. 27 reopen date to install new exhibits.
    Open Date: Reopens January 27.

Disney California Adventure extreme makeover to transform theme park entrance
An intense, 16-month construction project designed to transform the Disney California Adventure entryway from a nondescript strip mall into a circa-1920s Los Angeles streetscape will begin in earnest Jan. 4.

As part of an ongoing, $1.1 billion makeover, the sweeping and extensive reimagineering will wall off 4 acres of the main entrance between the C-A-L-I-F-O-R-N-I-A letters, Sunshine Plaza, Grizzly Peak and Hollywood Studios Backlot. The remade entryway, dubbed Buena Vista Street, will be designed to evoke the era when a young Walt Disney first arrived in Los Angeles.

After the winter holiday season ends, construction walls will go up around the iconic C-A-L-I-F-O-R-N-I-A letters Jan. 4 so that crews can turn the plaza area into Streamline Moderne turnstiles modeled after the former Pan-Pacific Auditorium in Los Angeles.

The most disruptive phase of the project will start in August, when retheming work will begin on the shops just inside the entrance. On Aug. 1, Engine-Ear Toys, Bu-r-r Bank Ice Cream and Baker's Field Bakery will close on the right side of the entrance. Then on Aug. 29, the Greetings from California gift shop on the left side of the entrance will close. If all goes according to plan, the new Pan-Pacific-style turnstiles will also open Aug. 29.

But construction will force Disney to route visitors through a 500-foot-long backstage pathway running behind Soarin' Over California. The temporary entrance/exit route is expected to remain in place through spring 2012. Another pathway carved through the Sunshine Plaza construction zone will allow visitors to travel between Condor Flats and Hollywood Studios Backlot.

The undertaking is so massive and unprecedented that DCA Vice President Mary Niven has taken to a Web video in an effort to convince visitors the Anaheim theme park will remain open for business once the front gate turns into a construction zone.

"While we're adding all these new attractions, our guests' favorite attractions are still open," said Niven, who faces the daunting challenge of building and operating a theme park at the same time.

Indeed, all major attractions and shows will remain open during construction.

By spring 2011, virtually all the areas of Paradise Pier currently behind construction walls will reopen to the public – including the Voyage of the Little Mermaid dark ride, the Goofy's Sky School wild mouse coaster, the Paradise Garden Grill and Boardwalk Pizza and Pasta restaurants, the Corndog Castle take-out stand and the SeaSide Souvenir shop.

The 12-acre Cars Land addition is expected to make its debut with three new rides in spring 2012.

The ongoing expansion, which some have derisively dubbed "Disney's Construction Adventure," has proven to be a continuing nightmare for DCA planners. They were forced to ship the Main Street Electrical Parade to the Magic Kingdom when earlier construction shrank the parade route and cancel the California Food & Wine Festival for 2011 and 2012 when logistical hurdles became evident.

In addition, the Pixar Play Parade will go on hiatus after Jan. 3, with the parade characters continuing to appear in pop-up "dance parties" throughout the park. "The Incredibles" mini float will begin appearing at various locations throughout the park on Jan. 7, with "Toy Story" and "Monsters, Inc." pop-up parties making their debuts over the ensuing weeks. The full Pixar parade is expected to return in November.

The Playhouse Disney theater will also close after Jan. 23 for conversion into the Disney Junior theater in spring. The rethemed theater will feature a new show segment based on the upcoming Disney Channel cartoon "Jake and the Never Land Pirates."

Additionally, the Blue Sky Cellar preview center will add a more elaborate display on the Little Mermaid ride beginning on Jan. 27. [ FULL STORY ]

Disney park puts parade on hiatus

During the parade’s hiatus, crews will be doing major work on the corridor, especially near the park entrance. The projects are part of a $1 billion renovation of the park, which turns 10 years old next year. Other Disney California Adventure entertainment changes include:

ElecTRONica: The nighttime, entertainment experience, based on “Tron: Legacy,” is set to continue indefinitely, McClintock said. Disney originally announced that it would run until April, but now the park does not have a specific end date. The movie opened on Friday and placed No. 1 at the box office over the weekend. Read more about Disney’s ElecTRONica.

“Playhouse Disney – Live on Stage”: The last day of the children’s show is set for Jan. 23. The theater will be remodeled and reopen in the spring with a retooled show, called “Disney Junior – Live on Stage.”

Blue Sky Cellar: The building, which highlights Disney California Adventure expansion projects, is set to get a new exhibit Jan. 27. [ FULL STORY ]

And in case you're wondering, expect a new fully-updated DCA Project Tracker in January. Until then, Happy holidays

According to this new article from the LATimes, there will be another pathway that will connect Condor Flats to HPB:

So maybe Disney will have the Trolley tracks and new portion of parade route finished by the time they close the other half of the Buena Vista Street. With trolley tracks finished up to Condor Flats. Letting us walk on trolley track route from Condor Flats to HPB.
