I was hoping you were getting some rest from all the long nights and was taking some time off for Christmas. Please know that a ton of people appreciate the time and effort you give to this thread. Even once a week tutorials would be appreciated if you had the time, thanks again for all of the insight.

    Well lucky her!
If you are looking for additional lenses, some of the first to consider (depending upon what she will be photographing) would be the 50mm F/1.8 lens. They are around $100.00 and are a lot of fun, especially for low light applications. The other would be a nice zoom lens. Once again, depending upon what she wants to photograph.

Definitely one of the first things to buy her with the camera is a good, easilly understandable manual for whichever camera you buy. The manual that comes with the camera are worthless and so boring no one will read it. A manual by a different person with photos in it is much, much easier to understand and is something she won't mind reading. (The majority of people who buy a new camera never read the manual.)

Oh, don't forget extra batteries and memory cards for that camera too.

    Hope that helps.

Those are very good, especially for a camera phone. It's not that I'm saying camera phones are bad, they are actually pretty darn good, only that it is difficult to get good pictures with them because they move when you push the button.

Here's a "Pretty" for today. I was really excited for this shot because I've been wanting to photograph this side of the Grizzly Mountain (does this have an official name?) at night for quite a while. Every time I went by it at night, the lights were out. Finally they lit it up for me last week.

Today’s “Disneyland Photo Tip of the Day” is a quick tip for improving the look of Blue Hour Photos called, When it’s Blue, think Daylight.

For those who don’t know what Blue Hour is, it is the small amount of time right after sunset when the sky is a deep blue tone before it goes completely dark. I’m not sure why it is called Blue “hour” because it really only lasts about 20 minutes.

It seems that most of the time when the White Balance is set to Auto it doesn’t quite capture the blue tone as well as my eyes remember it. However a quick flick of the dial to set the white balance to Daylight can richen the blues and give a more pleasing image.

I’ll start with this photo I took right at the beginning of blue hour. It was 5:02 and the sun had just gone down leaving the sky a kind of a hazy gray with a hint of blue.
This is with the white balance set to Auto. The camera set the color temperature to 5950.

This one is on Daylight and the color temp is at 5500. You can see a little more blue in the sky and the lights on the buildings aren’t so yellow.

I took this one 10 minutes later at 5:12. Notice how much bluer the sky is.
This first shot is on Auto White Balance.

Here it is on Daylight. See that the blue is just a little richer.

This one is on Auto and was taken at 5:20. The blue hour is just about over. Notice the warm orange/reddish tones in the sky behind the fun wheel.

Here it is on Daylight and the sky is cooler as well as the lights on the buildings.

So the next time you are taking a shot in blue hour, think Daylight!

Re: The Disneyland Photo of the Day...

Today's "Disneyland Photo Tip of the Day" tells a story with photos.

If every picture tells a story, why not use a series of photos to tell a fun and creative story.

On New Years Day my wife and I went to Balboa Park and ate lunch beside the fountain. While we were eating, I spent about 45 minutes watching and photographing a kid playing with a little red plastic boat. The entire time that I was taking pictures of him, I was imagining telling a Dr. Seuss style story with the pictures. He was wearing a bright red shirt that distracted the eye from his red boat so I decided to make all the photos black and white and leave his boat red. This way the viewer would easilly see that the boat was the reason for the story and for the boy to be doing what he was doing.

So without further ado, here we go.

There once was a boy with a red plastic boat.
He loved to take his red plastic boat to the park and play with it in the fountain.

The boy would drag his red plastic boat around and around showing it off to all the other children who came to the waters edge.

The boy showed off his red plastic boat to a man and his dog who came to drink from the fountain. The man was very impressed by the red plastic boat but the dog who was very thirsty and busy drinking, didn't seem to care.

Whenever enough people were watching, the boy with the red plastic boat would run around the fountain as fast as he could to show everyone how fast his red plastic boat could go.

The boy ran so fast that it filled his red plastic boat with water which forced him to stop and drain it out.

The boy with the red plastic boat played so hard that his favorite toy sank, leaving him broken hearted and fishing for it on the edge of the fountain.

    The End.

So if an opportunity arises to take a series of photos that can tell a story, have some fun and tell a story with them.

    Happy Snapping
