I've never heard of that. It might be a defective lens. Try taking it back or to a camera shop and see what they say.

I see from your Flickr page that you're using a D3100. The Nikon 50mm f/1.8 is not incompatible with your camera, but it won't autofocus with it. The D3100 doesn't have an in-body focusing motor, meaning that you need to buy lenses with "AF-S" in their name (or that mention they have a focus-motor in the lens).

Full frame (FX) lenses are compatible with crop sensor (DX) cameras on Nikon, so don't worry about that.

If you want the 50mm to autofocus on your camera, here's the version you need to get:
Amazon.com: Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S NIKKOR Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras: Electronics

    Personally, I'd get this instead:
Amazon.com: Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras: Electronics

The Sigma is 30mm, which I find to be a more useful focal length on crop sensor cameras. Plus, it's 1.4 and the image quality is excellent!

    Hot Sauce,

Thanks for the info on WDW. I will read through it. However the bar has been set by your thread so I hope they are as good as you

As for tutorial ideas, what about the Tiki Room, Indiana Jones and the Fantasyland dark rides? How would those differ than the tips for Pirates, HM and Winnie? Just a thought.

Also, not just for Disneyland but what about a topic of shooting on the Monorail? The parallels between that and taking pictures through something like a vehicle, plane or helicopter, I woul certainly find fascinating.

There is also the Wilderness Trail in DCA that presents a lot of great visuals but how to minimize the net lines and focus on the subjects like the kids or the scenery.

I don believe that I have seen it in an article before, but what about a Bugs Land?

I am eagerly awaiting what you will be able to educate all of us as students once Cars Land opens up.

What about the Back Side of water and any other great shots from the Jungle Cruise?

    Just a few thoughts.

As always, I can say enough about how great this thread is and how educational it is to me in terms of learning about photography. Since I found this thread, I have come to realize that you are going to be the inspiration/cause of me spending some $$$ for a DSLR and the basic fixings.

    Mike

Not so - you can use full frame lens on cropped sensors, but not the other way around (without cropping in the image). On a cropped sensor, the focal length is effectively lengthened, but they are compatible.

Thanks SOOOO much for helping out. Being a Canon shooter, I didn't know that Nikon lenses were compatable between Crop Sensor and Full Frame. I wish Canon did that. I'd be much more tempted to upgrade to the 5D III if I knew my lenses would work on it.

    They're better!

As for tutorial ideas, what about the Tiki Room, Indiana Jones and the Fantasyland dark rides? How would those differ than the tips for Pirates, HM and Winnie? Just a thought.

I could swear I did one on the Tiki Room. I remember taking the pictures for it but now I don't remember if I did the tutorial on it. Hmmm...
Indiana Jones is a really, really tough one. No matter what I do, all I get is blur. I've only seen one person get a nice shot in there while the ride was running and he was using a F/1.2 lens which he rented because they are very expensive. I try to keep mine geared towards people with a normal budget.

I'm still trying to crack the secret on the Fantasyland Dark Rides. They are really hard because they are so dark and you move through them so quickly. I've been riding them over and over and over, literally 5 times in a row and only getting one or two useable shots. HM, Pirates and Pooh are a cake walk in comparison.

Also, not just for Disneyland but what about a topic of shooting on the Monorail? The parallels between that and taking pictures through something like a vehicle, plane or helicopter, I woul certainly find fascinating.

    Very interesting idea!

There is also the Wilderness Trail in DCA that presents a lot of great visuals but how to minimize the net lines and focus on the subjects like the kids or the scenery.

I like it! I'll be there wanding around by myself on Monday and I was planning on spending some time in there for other reasons but I will definitly think about this one too. I'm alwasy afraid of photographing children when I am by myself because people will think I have some other agenda.

I don believe that I have seen it in an article before, but what about a Bugs Land?
Good Idea! I have some thoughts on this already.

I am eagerly awaiting what you will be able to educate all of us as students once Cars Land opens up.

What about the Back Side of water and any other great shots from the Jungle Cruise?

I did a post on certain times of day that addressed the Jungle Cruise but I haven't done a post on it by itself. Another great idea!

    Just a few thoughts.

Out of curiosity, do you have children?
I ask because some of the questions you pose sound like something a parent would ask. Not having children, I sometimes don't think about those things.

Full frame lenses are compatible with crop sensor cameras, crop sensor lenses are (mostly) not compatible with full frame bodies... They'll mount and focus, but the frame has 'dark' corners.

There are different styles of camera lens. These have varying degrees of compatibility.. including topics like 'does autofocus work', metering, and a few other factors. This is most significant when mixing bodies and lens from different eras.

Early Nikon autofocusing bodies had the AF motors in the camera.. so the lens had no AF motor in it itself. This are labeled as 'AF' mount lenses. The original 'nifty fifty' is that type of lens.. did you buy that?

The lower end newer Nikon cameras no longer have the AF motor in the camera - they rely on the lens to have it's own AF motor. This is the 'AF-S' mount. If it's not an AF-S lens, cameras without an internal motor can't autofocus the lens. Nikon introduced last year a AF-S version of the 'nifty fifty' 50mm F1.8 lens. That would be the one to get for a low end Nikon with no internal AF motor.

The new 50mm AF-S is a G lens.. which means it has no aperture ring. So that limits its compatibility with older Manual Focus cameras... but means nothing to modern Autofocusing camera bodies.
