Today’s “Disneyland Photo Tip of the Day” is an important aspect of creating interesting photographs. Today we discuss Foreground Interest.

Having something that adds to the story or gives greater context or dimension in the foreground of an image not only makes it more pleasing to the eye, it makes it appear more natural and can put the viewer's eye right there with you.

Here are some examples of Foreground Interest used in different ways to enhance the photo.

The blades of grass bring the element of Hoppers natural environment to the picture.


Here the wooden sign post is of the same theme of Frontierland so it ties the foreground to the background and give a nice sense of depth to the photo.


In this photo of the castle, the carousel horse reinforces the atmosphere of Fantasyland.


Here is an example of the average picture that most people would take of this sign. As with most single subject photos with nothing in the foreground, it is very flat, has no depth and is uninteresting.


Now, by changing the point of view and putting a portion of the plane in the foreground, the picture is much more interesting and better reflects Condor Flats.


By tilting the camera it changes the relationship of the foreground to the background and puts greater emphasis on the object in the front.




So the next time you are in the parks taking pictures, give some “forethought to the foreground”.

Thank all of you for the kind words. I am hoping to make it much better as I go. I've got lots of ideas and plans to improve it, I just need a day off to get to the park and take pictures. The sales in my company have exploded and I can't get a day off. Happy but frustrated.

Today’s “Disneyland Photo Tip of the Day” is all about Hotels.

In keeping with the post a few days ago about taking pictures of your meals, where you stay can be as important as what you eat. A large part of your vacation is spent at your hotel, so it deserves equal representation in your photo album. Photographing the hotel takes as much planning and effort as any other pictures of your vacation. It can also be some of the most fun and rewarding of all the pictures you take.

The Disneyland Resort has 3 wonderful hotels each with their own theme, personality and architectural style. Whenever I stay at one of the resort hotels I make it a point to wander the hotel grounds late at night with my camera on the tripod and take all the pictures I want. It’s also a great time to experiment with new techniques since there aren’t many people around and nobody bothers you. Then again, I’m usually doing it after 1:00 am so most people are sleeping.

Here are examples of each of the Disneyland Resort Hotels.

PARADISE PIER HOTEL






For this one I sat on the balcony of the 15th floor at the end of the building and did a 30 second exposure HDR of the traffic.




DISNEYLAND HOTEL














Small details of your room can also be nice memories of a special vacation.








GRAND CALIFORNIA HOTEL










So the next time you are enjoying one of the Disneyland Resort hotels, or any hotel for that matter, take an hour or so and pretend you are a professional photographer taking pictures of the hotel for a travel book. When you imagine yourself taking professional photographs, you will get professional looking photos. “It really works”

these photos are awesome i just wish i could remember half of it when i am actualy taking pictures....*sigh* but really these are great pictures(i'm jealous) i just started to try to take more advanced photography since reading your thread by steallng my dad's old camera, but i have to admit i'm failing miserably....oh well i guess i will just have to continue looking at your fantastic photos and mentally place my own name on them...

The question is... are you failing miserably or is my column failing your miserably? It's probably the latter. I have a bunch more lessons planned that might help but I need to get to Disneyland to take the pictures to support the lessons. I'm just so dang busy here at work that I can't get a day off. Hopefully in the next 3 weeks or so.
