YES, I do plan on getting a book published on this. Actually that has been my plan from day 1. My intent was to use this thread as a growing, learning tool to get better not only as a photographer but a writer as well. I wanted to post at least 300 different tutorials (I'm getting very close to that) and then take the top 100 of those and reformat them into a book form.

I've written about 95% of the book and am getting ready to send part of it to a company for page layout, cover design and editing. They will print a sample of it that I can send to publishers. I hope to have that part done in the next 3 to 4 weeks.

I could do it as an E-book but I am old fashioned and really want to try the actual publishing route first. If I cannot get a publisher to publish it as an actual book, I will consider going the E-book route.

Most of the content has come from this column but a lot of it I've written separately, just for the book. The chapter on Fireworks alone is 28 pages.

On a separate note, If I can get my work done in a reasonable time today I hope to have a new tutorial up later tonight. In the mean time, here's a pretty epic (if I do say so myself) Cars Land photo for today.

Re: The Disneyland Photo of the Day...

    8-23-12
Today’s “Disneyland Photo Tip of the Day” shows several reasons Why a Zoom Lens is a really wonderful lens to have.

I want to say right off the bat that this post was completely inspired by Disney Photo Guy and the fantastic photos he posts of the details in Cars Land. I was in Cars Land for 2 days before it opened and took close to a thousand photos, yet when I saw his pictures, I felt like I hadn’t seen any of it. I was so overwhelmed by the size and grand spectacle of it that I missed all the beautiful details.

This post also harkens back to when I bought my first DSLR, a Canon T1i. When I purchased the camera I also bought a 55-250mm F/3.5 – F/5.6 zoom lens that was only about $250.00. I bought it because I thought a zoom lens would be great to have so I could zoom in on things. I had no idea how zoom lenses really worked or what “Compression” was or what “Depth of Field” was or anything like that. I just thought I could zoom in on things.

Without knowing why, the zoom lens quickly became my favorite lens, not only because I could zoom in performers faces but because I just liked the way the photos looked. I didn’t know that I liked them because of the increased depth of field or the compression of elements in the photos, I just liked them.

As time went on and I bought other lenses like an ultra wide angle and learned how to do HDR, I rarely used the zoom lens and forgot how much I liked it. It wasn’t until I saw Disney Photo Guys photos that it made me want to pull it out of the bag and focus on the details of Cars Land. I also wanted to show the lenses specific and unique capabilities for capturing an image.

Some of the things I will be showing you are how it compresses subjects that are far apart and gives a soft and gorgeous depth of field as well as zooms in on details and the faces of performers.

So let’s give it a whirl. We’ll start with the entrance to DCA. I stood back behind a tree and zoomed in on the sign above the entry gate. By shooting through some of the branches, the leaves give a sense of distance and depth of elements.

Size: 117.3 KB

Then I simply moved the focus point onto the leaves and let the entry sign blur in the distance.

I did the same with these flowers at Radiator Springs Racers.

For this one I focused on the cars and let the foreground blur away.

When you use a zoom lens and zoom in on a small subject, even if you are reasonably close to it, the bokeh it creates is just gorgeous. I was only about 5 feet away from the hood ornament and zoomed in as close as I could. It went to 146 mm and F/5. Normally for a bokeh and depth of field like this I would have to use a 50mm F/1.4 lens. By zooming, you get the best of both worlds.

As I walked down Buena Vista Street towards Cars Land I caught the last moments of the News Boys and since I was at the back of the crowd, the zoom lens came in handy.

The same for the really awkward DJ show in Cars Land. The zoom lens also helps blur out the crowd in the background.

Right after that I decided to use the element of Compression on some details. If you remember the tutorial I wrote a while back on Compression, you know that it pulls the farthest object closer and makes objects that are far apart seem like they are closer together.

I liked how it compressed the stop light and the V8 sign. It looks like two evil eyes watching over you.

The same for the Flo’s and Ramones sign and the other signs.

I also had a lot of fun just going after some of the small details and pretty pieces of landscaping.

I also had fun shooting the shooters without them knowing. (Corsair.. aka Gregg Cooper)

Another benefit of taking photos like this is that I only spent about 1 minute per photo on post processing. Since I spend close to an hour on each HDR photo I do, it was really nice processing all these photos so quickly. So if you’re in the market for a new lens and don’t own a zoom lens, I highly recommend it.

    Happy Snapping!

Here's a little bit o' pretty for today. When I saw the Red Car sitting there at night I noticed all the wonderful ight pouring out of it through the windows and through the door falling onto the street. I know right then and there that it had to be done in black & white.

Here's a little bit o' pretty for today whilst I ponder the next tutorial. Not that it needs much pondering. I already know what it is. The problem is I'm out of ideas after this one and won't be back to Disneyland till the 10th of September. What to do... What to do...

It's not like this fountain is really anything architecturally spectacular but I sure to love it. Maybe it's all the cool blue colors that make it so inviting but I can't resist taking a picture of it every time I pass by.

I was thinking about my next trip (Maybe October...) and was thinking I should just leave my 80-320 lens home... I thought what could I possibly want a zoom that long in Disneyland for... then I saw your shots with the zoom. Ok, I still have sooooooo much to learn!
