Re: The Disneyland Photo of the Day...

I'm still trying to figure out how to link photos from dropbox for the tutorials I've done. It used to be really easy but now they've changed the layout and I can't figure it out to save my life. I may end up starting a separate Flickr page and just linking them the way I do the "Pretty" photos. It will show the links to that page, which I don't like but I may not have a choice.

While I'm figuring that out, I've been playing at the park with my new 5D Mark III and just now starting to get some of the results that I'm after. They aren't as perfect as I would like but it's definitely getting there. Here's some of the new ones.

Your work is jaw-droppingly beautiful. If these "aren't as perfect" as you would like I can't wait to see your pictures when you get "better."

Sorry I've been so out of touch. Working 100 hours a week doesn't leave much time for making new tutorials.

I'm trying and trying and F'ing TRYING to get one posted but I can't figure out how to do it from Dropbox to save my life.

If anyone knows how to upload images via dropbox, please let me know. I'm about to stick my fist through my screen.

Here's a few pretties for now.

Of course I see all the little flaws in them because I'm looking at most of them at 200%.
I'm pretty happy with the way this one came out.

Re: The Disneyland Photo of the Day...

I'm still having trouble figuring out how to link pictures from Dropbox into this column and boy is it FRUSTRATING!

In the mean time, on my Flickr page where I post a new photo every day, I've decided to dedicate Saturdays to the amazing Cast Members of Disneyland. Each Saturday I will post a photo of some type of CM. They might be performers, Face Characters, Non Face Characters, Attraction Hosts or simply just Janitorial of some kind. These people go so far out of their way to make every guest feel special every day, and we all know they don't do it for the money. I think they deserve a day of their own, even if it is just my little gesture.

I start this dedication with Samantha Salazar, attraction host at Monsters Inc. and the Red Car Trolley.

Re: The Disneyland Photo of the Day...

    6-13-13
I'm Back!!! Finally Back! As it turns out the problem I was having with uploading photos here was me being a complete and utter moron. I kept thinking I was supposed to be using Dropbox for storing and linking the images to, when it turns out it was supposed to be Photobucket. I had set up a Photobucket account when I had the problem a few months ago but forgot about it. DUH!

    Well on with the show!
Today's "Disneyland Photo Tip of the Day" is about Fringing.

I won't go into what all the technical things are that cause fringing because Wikipedia describes it so well right here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purple_fringing

My short version of it is the bright purple or sometimes bright green edge around a subject. It is most common on tree leaves against a bright white or dull sky or when the light is very bright and the colors of the subject are dark. It can also be considered Chromatic Aberration. All lenses and cameras have the problem. It doesn't matter what you spend on them. Some suffer less of it, some suffer more of it but they all do it.

There are ways you can minimize it by thinking about the shots you are taking and understanding the limitations of lenses and the subject you are shooting. Then once you've understood that a certain composition will have the problem, you can recompose your shot in hopes of minimizing it or eliminating it all together.

Lets look at what I'm talking about. This shot of the water wheel at Grizzly River Rapids is a pretty common shot. If you are taking it on a sunny day, in the afternoon, chances are, your sky is going to be white, especially if it is a day with May Gray or June Gloom. Those months are notorious for ugly skies and fringe filled photos.
    This is the original composition.

If I zoom in to 200% you can see the purple edges on the leaves and branches.

I knew the branches would have this because of the white sky, so I zoomed in a bit and just shot the waterfall through the trees, eliminating the sky altogether. (sorry the shot is a tiny bit blurry).

I did the same thing with this shot of the Rivers of America.

With this composition, look at the purple and green fringing on the branches. HORRIBLE!

I could zoom in and eliminate the sky but that is a pretty boring composition.

On the brighter side, if you have Photoshop CS6 and the Adobe Camera Raw editor that comes with it, there is a tool in it for Lens Correction that can fix most fringing issues.
This is what that tool looks like.

To fix it, you move the color sliders to a color range that encompasses the color of your fringing. It is best to get it as close (and tight) to the fringing color you have or it will eliminate that color from parts of the photo that you might want to keep. Then you simply slide the Amount sliders until it disappears.

Here are the same branches after defringing.

And here is the final image after being defringed.

This little tool in Adobe Camera Raw does work wonders but like I said before, it can remove color that you want from an image so you have to be careful with it. It really is best to try and avoid it from the beginning.

    Happy Snapping!

So glad to have the tips up and running.

Quite timely too as some of the pics I have been taking lately have had a lot of purple fringing to them, especially on faces.

Can't wait to read all the others you have planned

Oh, wow. How useful. Where do I find the "lens correction" buttons? I'm having a hard time using CS6, in part because everything is icon-driven and I don't know what icons I'm looking for.

When you are in the RAW editor, it is the 6th button from the left. The black & white = is on the left and the fx is on the right.

I'm having a hard time with CS6 too. I really only use it for the RAW editor and stitching panoramas together. I still do all my layering work and other touches in Elements 9.

Thanks. I started playing around and looking at it, and it made about 3% more sense now. Thought I had CS6, but I have 5. I think they're close enough.
