Thanks for the compliment. I also love the little nods to history that the Disney Imagineers place all over the park that most people never know about. I think less than 1% of guests will ever notice some of them, or care, but they do it anyway. That's what makes them so great. They pay attention to every little detail even though it is for such a small percentage of the guests.

This is giving me a great idea for another post. Hmmmmm.....

Re: The Disneyland Photo of the Day...

For today’s “Disneyland Photo Tip of the Day”, I like to call this one You Never Know Unless You Ask.

I really wanted to take a bunch of pictures in the lower outside part of the Indiana Jones Queue. All the snake planters and the entrance to the attraction itself are amazingly detailed and make a fantastic subject to photograph. The sun was high in the sky, which is the best time for that area because of all the high landscaping, but it wasn’t a busy day and they weren’t using that part of the queue. I politely asked the Cast Member at the entrance if I could go in there to take pictures and he said “Go Ahead”. I had the whole area to myself and spent at least 20 minutes in there just snapping away with no one to bother me or make me keep moving forward.

Post Processing: I don’t think I did very much post processing to these at all. If I did, it was just a little bit of Lightening Shadows in Photoshop and Cropping.

For this picture inside Tower of Terror, it was late at night and there was no line for the ride. There was no body behind me coming in so I “VERY POLITELY” asked the CM if I could go under the rope to take a few pictures. He said I could as long as I didn’t touch anything or disturb the dust and made it quick.

Post Processing: For the picture in Tower of Terror, I had to be quick, so I had to use a very high ISO of 3200, which makes a lot of noise in the picture. I used the Canon RAW Software that comes with the camera to reduce the noise. Then I converted it to a Jpeg and opened it in Photoscape, adjusted the lighting a small amount and then went into the Filters dropdown menu and to Vignette and added a soft #3 Vignette to it.

So in conclusion, if you look like you are somewhat serious about taking pictures and ask politely, you never know what you might get to photograph until you ask.

    Happy Snapping!

Re: The Disneyland Photo of the Day...

Today’s “Disneyland Photo tip of the Day” is going to focus on Symbolism.

There are different ways that you can use symbolism in your pictures. Sometimes a picture doesn’t need show the entire subject. There is usually a very small part of the subject that captures the true meaning and intent of what it is. I like to call it “The Heart of the Object”. The example below is one of my favorite pictures because it seems to capture and embrace the true meaning of the Partners Statue. It only shows a small part of Mickey’s face and his hand holding another hand. You already know that it is Walt’s hand, so there is no need to show all of him. When I look at this picture, I clearly see the child like innocence in Mickey’s face, holding his dads hand and the strength of Walt’s hand in a reassuring manner saying everything is going to be just fine. To me it shows a proud father with his child sharing a wonderful moment. It’s only a very small portion of the statue but it symbolizes what the statue is all about. I feel more emotion from this picture than any other that I have taken at the parks.

In the next photo of Sunshine Plaza in DCA, we see the Sunflowers in the foreground and the giant Sun hubcap thingy in the background. The sunflowers are the symbol that represents the feeling and atmosphere of Sunshine Plaza.

In this photo of the wedding pavilion at the Disneyland Hotel, I only showed a portion of the gazebo but instead focused on the single white rose in the foreground to symbolize purity, love and the romance of the area.

Another example of this could be a black and white picture of a Doom Buggie from Haunted Mansion. You don’t need to see the Mansion or the Bride, the Doom Buggie says it all by itself. Regions Beyond recently posted a fabulous picture of them that told the whole story with just the Doom Buggies.

If you have any pictures you have taken at the parks that symbolize a certain attraction, emotion or part of the park, please share them. I would really like to see them and I’m sure everyone else would too.

Thanks for reading and Happy Snapping!

Your picture of the partners statue is by far my favorite one that you have on here, so simple but so so sweet.

and I only have one very very small suggestion just because I am late in coming to the pic of the day party. If I my suggest starting a new thread at the beginning of each week with like the pic of the day for 8/8/2010 to 8/14/2010 or something like that, again just a suggestion.

Thank you. Very kind of you to say.
The funny thing about the Partners picture is that the original photo was of the whole statue and the trees around it. It was one of those gray sky days and the picture did nothing for me. I cropped out about 90% of it and just kept that part, and now it's one of my favorites.

First off....thank you very much for the shout out, wasn't expecting that at all! You have a lot of great shots yourself, and the one you reference was just a spur-of-the-moment thing since I had my tripod out to get a shot of the arm "torch holder" at the end of the unload ramp, I didn't think the Doombuggies shot would be anything special, so glad people seem to enjoy it!

Also, thank you for this excellent thread and all the info you share...very interesting and useful stuff. It has made me sort of want to do a similar one with my photos (explaining context and techniques and what I look for), but don't wish to steal your thunder of course or make it like deliberately ripping off your excellent idea, lol. Keep up the good work, this last batch was especially interesting, and you are dead on in that just politely asking a CM can afford some great photo opportunities.
