    Question NOS cost how much?

I've heard it said repeatedly from several sources that Disneyland's New Orleans Square cost $18 Million to build. This from fact books and from tour guides at the park, among others.

However, in the DL TV show episode "Disneyland Around the Seasons" Walt himself says "New Orleans Square alone cost fifteen million"

So... why the different numbers? Anyone know the scoop?

I don't know the correct number, I have heard both before.

I have also heard that the NOS expansion cost as much as they spent on the entire park in 1955.

Perhaps 18 is most accurate and Uncle Walt was just rounding it off.
"Yesterday, a man walked up to me and said, 'Isn't it a shame that Walt Disney couldn't be here to see this?' and I said, "He did see this, that's why it's here."

I would imagine that the 15M was more of an estimate and the 18M was the actual. Remember, Walt died before NOS was completed.

NOS opened in 1966, and Walt and Lillian were both there for the opening. What exactly comprised the "completion"? Perhaps that is the missing 3 million.

    Re: NOS cost how much?

When New Orleans Square first opened it cost $15 million to build- according to The Nickel Tour, "almost as much as all of Disneyland had cost in 1955 [$17 million] and equal to the $15 million paid in 1803 for the entire Louisiana Purchase, which more than doubled the size of the United States!"

So I'm guessing it was 15, but keep in mind that New Orleans Square opened before the Haunted Mansion was conceived, and Pirates opened nearly a year after the land opened. So perhaps the 18 came from the additional costs lavished on DL's most intricately detailed land.

    1803, $15 million dollars buys: Lousianna; Inflation = $192,982,185
    1955, $17 million dollars buys: Disneyland; Inflation = $116,797,056
1966, $18 million dollars buys: New Orleans Square; Inflation = $105,453,797
1989, $17 million dollars buys: Splash Mountain; Inflation = $26,498,420

    Priceless!

Dunno... that just seemed to fit for some reason

Did Pirates cost an additional $17 million or is it part of NOS?

Good question... Unky Walt said the NOS project was 17 mill and as far as I know Pirates was always part of the NOS project.... at least from the time it went on the Disneyland television show.
