Sad Cast Members and their hatred towards Disneyland

Nearly every cast member I have spoken to, has nothing good to say about Disneyland. They always tell me that they hate it, call it bad names, complain about it, ect. The fact that they were saying they didn't like it until recently, never really bothered me. At least until a few days ago where I spoke to a man who did janitorial work at the parks and I couldn't believe the things he was saying. He got to a point where he wished that Disneyland would get blown up by terrorists, so he would never go back, (which would put him out of a job btw). But if people are talking about Disneyland like this, then why even work there in the first place? There are plenty of places hiring. Why not give the job to somebody who cares and or appreciate the fact that Disney gave them a job.

Re: Cast Members and their hatred towards Disneyland

Beats me. I thought I heard even In & Out Burger pays more than a Disneyland ride operator. Why not just work there? I'd love a job at Disneyland, but every time I go to apply, they aren't hiring.

If that's because jerks who hate the place are working there instead, that's a damn shame.

Solution: Pay better, make it harder to get a job there. Make it a better place to work and a better caliber of people will work there.

Unfortunately, that means Disney would have to pay more. God forbid.

Really? The CM's and higher ups I've talked to said they loved it there besides the fact of "game playing" that goes on inside of certain departments.

Re: Cast Members and their hatred towards Disneyland

I wouldn't say I hate Disneyland since I've become a CM, but I've defiantly gotten a different view of the park that I would never see the same again. To me it's mostly guests that I've learned to dislike. There are too many of them who never give us any respect and usually just see us as people who do nothing but get them on their merry way. It's hard for me to not take that personally, and I can see many CMs taking it personally also. It's a pet peeve of mine when guests literally wave their money in my face when I'm trying to have a conversation with them and make them feel good about their purchases! It happens a lot! Thats usually when I take my time even more and talk to them as much as I can to have them relax and not be so much in a rush! I would definatly have to say they don't pay us enough for what we have to deal with. Or even give us enough hours for that matter! It's frustrating having to go to work for only 4 hours! It's really a waste of money because it would cost me about $10 in gas to get to work to make only $40 for that day? Of course, you could say "Then why work there?" well for me, I love Disneyland too much to leave! The CMs the atmosphere and the security and safeness is just good enough for me to want to stay! But really, I don't experience THAT many CMs who hate Disneyland so much. Maybe about 2 out of 10, but not that many.

My sister has never complained about working there. But the pay certainly does suck.

of course the higher guys like it...they have the power. I have heard Disneyland CM's don't like the job because of their bosses mainly and of course the many rude guests who think CM's must smile 24/7

You're talking to the wrong cast members if they all say they hate it. I love Disneyland. But I work in DCA. Maybe that's why I love it. Also consider that the CMs may have been joking.

This is news to me. Every CM I know enjoys working there.

As many have said, if you hate a job, you should quit and let someone else in who wants to be there.

Most Cms I talk to love it. You must have picked the wrong CM on the wrong day.

Quoted for truth. I know a pretty good number of CMs, and it's clear that opinions about the job range from absolute adoration to enraged frustration...but it's skewed toward the former. In my experience, even the ones who don't have amazing customer service skills often like the parks to some degree. There is no culture of Disney hatred at Disney as far as I can tell, even though it's just a job to many.

In other news...please make sure this thread doesn't veer into CM-bashing territory, folks. I mean, it kinda started there, but let's keep things respectful. We have a lot of MiceChatters who are CMs, and it really isn't nice to insult the ones who aren't MiceChatters, either. Discussing things that could be better is totally fine, but let's avoid making negative over-generalizations that hurt the good CMs.

Big surprise, the guy sweeping up trash all day hates his job. A crappy job is a crappy job no matter WHERE it is.

Funny you should mention In & Out. Every time I go there, I can't help but notice that the people working there (at least the ones I've been to) are often times very nice looking, and very friendly. I always think of them as being the type who would work well at a place like Disneyland. Nice appearance, and personable.

And these were the type Disney was looking for back in its heyday.

I hired in as a CM in '83, and while I only caught the tail end of it (many of the veteran CMs would tell me the 70s and prior were some of the best years at the park), there definitely was a "casting" process that still took place. The job paid well, and was still a pretty difficult position to get. And it wasn't because of any recession. Disney still stood for something unique. They could still be really choosy. I felt fortunate to get the job.

My take on the CMs nowadays is that most are still pretty good. There are a group though who come off as indifferent. And a smattering who I have found myself wondering how they got past casting.

I'm sure there were those who were that way when I worked there too. That's just how it is.

Of course, I was there, largely after the corporate turnaround took place, which caused an outbreak of some critical attitudes. Course the attitude was centered more around a sense of loss. A lot of veteran CMs wishing it to be the way it used to be. And being a little saddened by the fact it wasn't. You could see it in their demeanor on occasion, as hard as they may have tried to conceal it.

I feel lucky though to have had at least a little taste of what it had been like by hiring in in '83. I still worked with a lot of CMs who had either been there since the beginning, or had hired in during the 60s and early 70s. They were the ones who had a direct taste of what Walt saw as being the vision for his park.

Some of them continued to stick it out beyond '84 even though they didn't like the direction the park was heading. Some left.

Things have continued to change though the further we get away from those days. In many ways.

It has certainly taken some getting used to....seeing women in men's suits working the Steam Trains or Main St. Vehicles. I know if you analyze CM roles down to the nub, you'll find inconsistencies elsewhere that have been allowed and not questioned, but to me, the Main St. roles are more glaring than some of the others.

And when I worked in Fantasyland, women weren't offended that they didn't work Skyway. And men weren't offended that they couldn't work Storybook. That's just how it was, and no one took it personally.

I know when I brought this up on another Disney board though, I got knocked for it by someone who sarcastically asked if I was aware of something called the equal rights amendment.

I replied by saying I was very aware of it, but sometimes historical context should be allowed to prevail, especially in a place like Disneyland. A place that is unique...and a place that is built on roles and casting, because of the very nature of its environment.

    Among other things though:

Seeing men sporting more facial hair is a little odd. A little shadow/stubble got you sent backstage to shave.

Costumes looking somewhat more disheveled than I remember them being. Some not fitting the CM appropriately. Shirts pulled out. Inconsistency in head apparel (if I was working Small World and didn't have my hat on something was said immediately). Sunglasses on CMs after the sun has long gone down.

All of these things were just understood, including those that touched on gender casting. And we accepted them as Disney CMs.

Now we live in a day and age where you can't offend anyone. You can't do anything for fear of infringing on someone's rights.

Disneyland has been impacted by the social change that has arisen in recent decades, IMO. Unfortunately that's how it is.

And while some of it's understandable, I think some if it goes overboard.
