Haunted Mansion trivia: Does anyone remember the original four busts?

Hi, I have been going to Disneyland since I was a young child. I remember that originally, this would be in the 1960's soon after the Haunted Mansion opened, the four busts that sing in the graveyard were all intact, none was broken. I remember noticing later in the 1970's that they changed one of them and broken it, as it is today. Does anyone else remember that?

I don't think that was ever the case. Plus, there are five instead of four. Now, at Phantom Manor in Disneyland Paris there are four, and none of them are broken there. At Disneyland they've always been the same way, five with one broken, I believe.

The test footage of the now-broken Ravenscroft bust seen in the "Disneyland Showtime" Special with the Osmonds has the bust intact. You could be right.

I sure this topic on the broken bust was discussed somewhere within the "Long Forgotten" Mansion threads.
I don't have week to read them all to find it; if memory serves, while the busts were all made intact there was a mistake on Thurl's bust base. The problem with it's off centered-ness was 'corrected' by breaking it. In Disneyland, I'm fairly sure it was as it 'broken' on the Mansion's opening day. The bust that was used in Florida was made correctly ( or corrected ) so it isn't broken.

Perhaps one or two of the mansion expects will weigh in and maybe even re-link all the info. 8)

    Respectfully,

    OTR

Actually, the WDW version was broken from day 1 as well - and in the exact same way the DL version is seen. In fact I've always believed the whole set-up of 4 unbroken/ 1 broken was intentional on the Imagineers' part from at least the point when filming the voice actors - you'll notice the guy on the left of Thurl always looks *down* at his broken head whenever he (the actor on the left) is singing. Not something I'd think he'd been told to do if they didn't intend something down there to react to in that fashion. This is the first I'm ever hearing that it was broken due to being a defect in construction...

Actually, at Disneyland there were only four singing busts from the beginning. And there was no broken bust. That happened about five to eight years after the opening of the attraction. I now have finally found proof. It was on Youtube of early Disneyland Haunted Mansion. In it, it briefly shows the four busts, all intact. I knew that this was the case but did not have a way of proving it until now.

That shot is from Phantom Manor, where there are four busts and none are broken.

Aah, I forgot what the Haunted Mansion was like. When no one recited the intro in the elevator, or took flash pictures, or screamed in my ear because they were "frightened".

    *sigh*

While I suppose there could be discussion about whether Thurl's bust was always broken and toppled (I for one, believe it has been since opening), the ride blueprints and scale models show that there have always been five busts. A quick example can be seen in this post:

No, the original ride did not have any broken busts. Whether other Haunted Mansions do or do not, is not the issue. I tell you there was a change.

I too rode the HM within days of it opening and something tells me your right about the busts although time, especially a lot it, does strange things to the memory
