Found: Autopia Car from late 1950's or early 1960's

It's not often I get to report on interesting Disney news from Tennessee so I was very surprised to stumble across this little gem.

This car is owned by a man that sells and services golf carts. He claims that the body is from the Disneyland Autopia somewhere between the years of late 1950's or early 1960's.

    Modified dashboard with stereo.

Side view comparing its size with real cars.

    Look no engine!

It is currently mounted on a golf cart frame and is now all electric. Looks like a lot of fun!

Sorry guys, it is not for sale.

    Questions:

I can only report what I am told. I am wondering if any Mice Chatters might have an opinion - does this look authentic? Any comments about this car style or years it operated?

It looks similar to Autopia chassis in use in that era. But without provenance and definite proof it came from Disneyland, it's just a ratty fiberglass shell. There have been hundreds if not thousands of Autopia-style driving courses all over the country, it probably came from one of those. The chance it came from Disneyland is slim at best.

    I would say NO...
I have been driving minature cars on the Disneyland property for more than 60 years.

It is similar to an Autopia car, but is different than what can be found in old pictures of 50 & 60's cars. By 69 they were completly different.

Here I am in the 1955 - early 60's car.

Here is a late 60's car that is similar.

There are 8 Autopia car designs

1955 to 1958 ... they went through Mark I, II, III, and IV .. basically the same thing

    1959 through 1963 ... the Mark Vs -

    1964 - 1968 ... the Mark VIs -

(1964 was also when the guide rail down the center of the lane was first installed)

    1968 - to 2000 ... the Mark VIIs

    2000 - present ... today's Mark VIIIs .......

That car above closely resembles the Mark VI .. but I have a feeling .. it's a just a look-a-like Mark VI, and not from Disneyland.

Sad Re: Found: Autopia Car from late 1950's or early 1960's

OK, I'm going to have to agree. This does not look like any of the Disneyland Autopia models of the past. I'll just say that somebody had a good story to tell him when he bought it and he has a good story to tell his friends.

    Oh well...

PS - They really have a thing about calling everything Mark. When the Mark Twain was built what did they do with the Mark One?
