Duck vs. Monorail - Is this a common occurrence?

Last Friday at dusk, while in the right side queue for Matterhorn, a duck landed on the Monorail Beam causing the driver to stop and wait for him to move. It sat there for a few minutes while the driver continued to blow the horn, but the duck was unimpressed and did not move until a few guests started tossing bits of food at him.

My avatar is a photo of the Monorail vs, Duck incident (sorry, but it appears I can not upload pics direct from my computer, so that is the best I can do).

So, the question is, does that happen often? It was quite entertaining to those of us that happened to be nearby. It was a first for me, but I only get to Disneyland once a year if I am lucky.

Yeah, it happens all the time. If they didn't stop for the little duckies, there would be a bigger menu at Bengal BarBQ.

Unfortunately, ducks vs monorail incidents happen frequently, and the duck almost always loses. Here's an insider secret: if you ever hear that a monorail had to be taken out of service, but don't know the reason, there's a possibility that it was due to a duck getting caught in one of the tires. I can't imagine being the monorail technician that has to retrieve the duck parts.

In the picture above, you can imagine how many complaints DLP would have gotten if someone had witnessed the duck getting run over by the monorail train.

There are quite a few duck-divas at Disneyland. I saw a duck that refused to move during Fantasmic. So for most of the show we saw a giant silhouette of a duck on the water screen. :-D

That has happened to me before while riding in the front of the monorail. At 4:15 on the video you can see the duck on the beam flying away from the monorail. The driver said he doesn't stop because if you do, they will not move. He said he keeps going and they fly away at the last second every time.

It's 16 miles to Disneyland, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.

    Hit It.

    ..that's hilarious!!

I can just see it now, “... and tonight on our menu at WCT we have something very special, a dead duck from our very own monorail track, cleaned of it's feathers and stuck on nice corn polenta with a light cream and basil sauce, it is truly delish. The chef recommends it.”

These Disney Ducks as I like to call them are funny birds. I remember back in 2005 I was in line to meet Cinderella by the castle and a duck came flying by if Cinderella didn't dunk her wig would of come off. The duck was flying strage down at her. I tell you these ducks have there only mines set and if you are in the way so what? They do it anyways.

Re: Duck vs. Monorail - Is this a common occurrence?

I rode in the front of the monorail once when there was a duck on the beam. The pilot handled the situation very well and low-key by keeping the train moving steadily at a reduced speed. The duck flew away just in time.

The problem is, when a monorail stops for a duck, it doesn't know to move because nothing is approaching it. All the horn does is attract attention from crowds below.
