Soft Openings - Star Tours & Little Mermaid - When & How?

Does anyone when & if they will have soft openings for these rides. And most importantly, how does one get on that list?

Soft Openings means the ride is open but is not advertised as such. Sometimes they call it technical rehearsals. Anybody can go as long as you are there when they have them. Which can be the week before or even earlier. There is no guaranteed soft openings for these rides and sometimes they can only last for a couple of hours and not the whole day. I hope this answers your question.

Nobody knows. I'm sure not even Disney knows this early on. You just have to be at there at the right time.

Why is this labeled as news when it's just a question?
You got me all excited that they'd actually announced soft openings somewhere (even though that makes no sense since the facades of both attractions aren't even done yet)

fixed that one. There is nothing for sure about soft openings as people have said. It may be all day every day or maybe an hour here or there or even none at all.

If they're having it, they won't be advertising it. Most likely be a CM out front sort of nonchalantly standing there, door will be open. But that's it. Just make sure with the CM that you can in fact ride.

No list or anything. They usually happen then week or so before opening so they can work out final kinks with things. If they are ahead of schedule, they may last longer. If they are behind, they may be shorter. They may only keep it open for an hour or two here and there throughout the day. May skip a day or two between days. You never know.

Re: Soft Openings - Star Tours & Little Mermaid - When & How?

Sorry for the double post, but I've been doing some thinking for a bit now...

We haven't heard any rumor of delays or hold-ups or slowdowns at all with regards to either TLM or ST2. We know in fact that the TLM ride vehicles were in place and such some weeks ago.

Given this information, and remembering the debacle that was the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage opening, I'm willing to bet that we'll see a good long period of soft openings and previews. Probably guinea pig it with CMs for a bit before they do AP preview days/nights as well as general soft openings. At least a week of soft openings I would think. And given the number of APs and how nightmarish Nemo was, I would think they would want plenty of time to do this as well. Week of previews + week of soft openings? That puts it about the 20th of May? Maybe some days closed to tweak and do a final tune up/cleaning before official opening day.

Just my opinion, but it seems reasonable given previous ride openings as well as the news we've heard about TLM and ST2.

I'm guessing we will hear about this a lot from cast members in the area. Based on past experience, it might be a good idea to "hang out" in that particular area of the park, and sometimes they do open to test the ride, flow, bugs, etc. Can't wait!

As for another "How" to get into a soft opening...keep checking the Disneyland AP website. Not sure if they will do this again, but they had a contest for APs to get a sneak peak of Toy Story Mania before it opened. I won tickets for that and for the first Tinkerbell movie that they showed in the Opera House before it was released on DVD. I've never seen any other contests since then, but it couldn't hurt to keep checking!
    Well Gawrsh!

Remember that the soft opening are also a training ground for the cast members to train them so they can learn how to handle the crowds and loading and unloading people.

As for when they will happen. After we hear about cast member previews we can then expect to see some soft openings.

When they did the soft opening for the remodeled space mountain someone who knew a cast member posted the information here on the site. That was as close as it came to an announcement.

My suggestion is to keep your eyes open here on the website.

Re: Soft Openings - Star Tours & Little Mermaid - When & How?

Yeah thats the beauty of sites like this. Chances are there will be a CM themselves who will type here they heard there will be a soft opening on a certain day and if there is, people will know ahead of time. And of course with things like twitter and facebook, if a soft open just happens, chances are you will hear about it in real time. Real question is are you close enough with enough free time to drop everything and head over there on a moments notice?

And I'm GUESSING if any of them will have a soft opening, it will be TLM first because we heard the ride is practically done inside. I think its just a matter of the outside interior being complete and the queue area. But I imagine once thats done, they will start to let people check it out and it could be a few weeks before official opening--strictly a guess though.

Yup, I will of course keep posted on when they are doing soft openings! It is very exciting! I can't wait for CM previews! Of course I'd go to the Mermaid one, not too sure about ST, I could wait a while before riding that one, not as interested.

I really hope if nothing else TLM is having soft openings on the May 20th weekend. My birthday is May 20th and I'll be down in Orange County and the resort all weekend and having TLM be open would be like the greatest. ST would also be cool as it's one of my DL favorites but I'm looking WAY more forward to TLM
