Hyperion Theater, Carthay Circle Theatre ?

There seems to be confusion on the spelling of the word Theater or Theatre at the DLR. The Hyperion Theater is spelled '-er', while the Carthay (the original and the DCA version) is spelled '-re'.

Meanwhile, we have the Tomorrowland TheatER, but the Fantasyland TheatRE (yesterdayland). The latter makes sense since it's got an Faire flair to it.

Master Gracey on the DCA Tracker and the Yesterdayland site both get certain spellings wrong.

Is there a rhyme or reason to Disney's choice for ER or RE? What other theaters have I missed.

I personally use (and many dictionaries and grammar books back me up) Theater to refer to the building, Theatre to refer to the craft.

It's no big deal. The spelling of Theater with an RE, is purely class. It's just meant to be a classier way to spell it. Theaters have been doing this for the longest time.

I am with you on this subject. Makes perfect sense to spell it with the guidelines you provided.

OK, so spelling doesn't matter to you, j_beek_3000, but it's important to some of us, especially for historical purposes.

It's not so much a class thing as it is related to purpose. Broadway might use RE because it's more about the show (the craft of Theatre) while ER is used where the building is of more importance.

    Curious...

I can't say for all of them, but I imagine they chose -re for Carthay Circle Theatre because that's the proper name of the landmark...at least so I thought, but the truth is I can find references to it being spelt both ways and the only imagery I can find from the Snow White premier just calls it Carthay Circle. I always thought you called a place where movies are played a movie theater and where stage shows are performed a theatre...but I have no specific reason for either version or my use of them.

"Theater" is the American spelling and "theatre" is the British spelling. Fantasyland being European in theme, it would make sense to have a "theatre" as the spelling. Its Old World connotations was thought to give "theatre" an air of class and high culture, and is why it was used for theaters here in the United States by theater owners.

Here's a vintage program where the Carthay Circle logo uses the "Theatre" spelling:
