How do you cope with crowds at Disneyland?

A question, especially if you do the parks solo: how do you cope with the insane crowds at Disneyland either when walking, when eating in the dining places, waiting in long lines? I have severe anxiety issues. If a crowded area looks intimidating enough I will run away but I overstress myself and wish I could just deal with it. If I feel like an eatery does not have any tables or only has tables to close to other people I will freak.

What are some good coping skills for this?

I should also probably mention that as a high functioning autistic, I fear such crowds would give me overstimulation and put me into near meltdown mode. This is something more likely to happen when I do the parks solo which I often do.

In all kindness, Toon, I would really suggest that you get with a psychologist who can give you individual, specific to you, help with your coping and other problems. This forum probably isn't the best place to get help for your serious problems.

^ I agree with the above poster. I have a friend with severe social anxiety disorder. She was able to get medication that really helps with the situation. I would also suggest not going to the park alone on super busy days, I've been told being around people that you know helps.

When it comes to eating, why not take your meal to one of the picnic areas? They are usually not very crowded, especially the one near Spash Mountain. Not much you can do in line aisde from ignoring them by maybe playing games on your cell phone, bring a nintendo DS/portable game system.

I'll join in to say I'm totally unqualified to answer this question, but I can suggest using Fastpasses to minimize your waits (especially in the rat maze outside Indy which is terrible regardless of where you land in the autism spectrum!). There used to be a MiceChat meet-up every Sunday at noon at the hub. I don't know if that still happens, but if so you could plan your trip for a Sunday, meet some Micechatters and have some company!

I know how you feel. I am also a hater of large crowds. I also get upset at people who take flash pictures too.

One important thing is to breathe and keep your calm. Focus on where you want to go and now how. People give off energy that can be picked up and the more people are present the more energy comes at you. I tend to feel that energy, which makes me antsy and ruins my experience. However, I have my tricks to cope for it.

What I do in that case is find an open spot, sit down and regroup my thoughts. Look for a way that allows you to pass through the crowd easily, but for the most time keep your focus on your goal. If you feel uneasy, look at the scenery and let that distract you from the people and when waiting in line, think to yourself that everybody else has their own issues.

Still, I'm no expert but in case of an attack find your happy place and then realize you're already there and let that thought push your anxiety away.

Re: How do you cope with crowds at Disneyland?

I try to plan trips when the crowds will be thinner. But, if I am there when it is crowded, one thing that I do is to remind myself that I don't have to see and ride everything on every trip. If there are big crowds then many times I skip the really popular rides. Or I get a fastpass for something popular, then go enjoy less crowded attractions like the Tiki Room. If I am feeling overwhelmed by the crowds I try to find a spot off the beaten path so I can just relax and regroup. Sometimes it is just nice to be in DL. If the crowds are too much grab a seat and stay out of the action.

Don't want to get into the psychological issues here, but will say...

Go in the off-season, go on weekdays if you can.

I would rather go when it is not so crowded. If I know it will be busier than I would like, I get in the mindset that I will have to take things slower and have more patience. I try to focus on where I am and enjoy the scenery around me and not focus on the crowds.

Re: How do you cope with crowds at Disneyland?

I'm get very easily anxious with lots of crowds. As I've gotten older, I've gotten a little less tolerant of crowding and have become slightly claustrophobic. Luckily I had a friend with me yesterday who was teaching me a few lessons in patience and was helping keep me calm. Normally I just get really upset when people are walking and just stop, causing people to run into them or creating a roadblock. To me, that's really inconsiderate and at least when you're all walking in a herd, people are all
walking and are trying to get somewhere.

I am no expert either, but I have heard from a friend that taking an iPod to listen to music might help in some situations as long as you can still be aware of your surroundings.

Also plan for more then one day so you don't have to rush. You could also leave the park for an hour or two in the afternoon tp go back to your hotel and hang by the pool or go to the upper sitting areas in the Grand Californian or anyplace that would be more relaxing.

Definitely not an expert here either, but a few suggestions.... Avoid the known bottleneck areas, and try and take pathways not quite so crowded, like the waterfront area when traveling through New Orleans Square, Thunder Mtn pathway to Fantasyland, the side path by the Matterhorn to Tomorrowland. Also, just take some breaks when the crowds start getting to you by sitting and resting in some open and not crowded areas, like Carnation Plaza, Fantasy Garden Pier, upper area on the Small World pathway, etc. (these might be places where you might pick up food and take to sit and eat also). Need a break, but want to go on a ride...get on the train and take the "Grand Circle Tour" around the park a time or two. Hope this helps a little

Eating meals off the standard times can help with crowds in restaurants as well. Just taking it slow can also help. Meander... don't get it in your head that you have to do x at y time. Just go with the flow and take it easy. A relaxed mental attitude can help ease anxiety.

I would also echo the sentiments about seeing a doctor if you haven't already about the anxiety. My wife had pretty severe anxiety and panic attacks, but she is night and day better after working with our doctor.

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. mycroft16 on Twitter
