Where should the next Disney resort be located?

Since it seems the company wants to extend it's reach into as many places as possible, where would yo like a new resort to go up? After thinking, I think it'd be interesting if there was a Disneyland Australia. You have a chance to visit a pretty exotic location (to us), the language will also be english, so won't need to learn new phrases for it.. plus there may be an opportunity for a large amount of land to be developed on. Granted, I don't know how much land there is a nature preserve, etc, so any Aussies that may be here can correct me.

I still believe Disney needs to focus on the resorts they have on hand. Expanding into Shanghai is understandable, the sooner they act, the better. But we don't need another Magic Kingdom anywhere else.

I honestly say none. IMHO, I feel like it's better to keep only a few of them open throughout the world. It makes them feel more special. If they keep churning out park after park it'll feel kind of cheap to me.

I think Australia would be cool, especially because of the language thing. What I would also like is if they acquired another Caribbean island and turned that into an all inclusive resort and theme park. Talk about a travel destination!

I totally agree. I think they have hit their max as it is. If there is a "Disneyland" on every corner , the "specailness" goes away.

I don't personally think they even need one at Shanghai, but considering the fact that this is Disney we're talking about...I think the next one would be in either Australia or somewhere in Europe. They've got quite a few in Asia already, and they while people in Europe can pretty easily drive to Paris, I think there should be one in Eastern Europe. Maybe even at the Western most edge of Russia.

Disneyland Australia sounds like a great idea, but it's really impractical: local population is too small, US is too far away and too expensive to fly from, and Asia will have three Disney resorts.

Brasil or somewhere in the Middle East would be the next most logical places I think. But both offer some challenges. I could see Brasil becoming viable at some point soon, but it would cut into WDW's business, so they might be a bit wary of that. I definitely think there will be more resorts, there's a big world out there. Some areas just don't have enough economic development yet, but things are changing. But I don't see why a few more places couldn't get resorts eventually before they were too over-saturated.
The Mickey audience is not made up of people; it has no racial, national, political, religious or social differences or affiliations; the Mickey audience is made up of parts of people, of that deathless, precious, ageless, absolutely primitive remnant of something in every world-wracked human being which makes us play with children’s toys and laugh without self-consciousness at silly things, and sing in bathtubs, and dream and believe that our babies are uniquely beautiful. You know…the Mickey in us.

Re: Where should the next Disney resort be located?

Not should, but will, be located:

    Odds:

100-1: Australia: Market is too small and region (including Australia) already served by HKDL.

20-1: Dubai/Abu Dhabi: Dreams for the Emirates to become the Las Vegas/Orlando of the World evaporated with the 2008 crash... region is volatile with anti-American (Disney) factions nearby.

12-1: South Korea: WDI has been developing plans for a park there for some time (concept art has leaked). Universal & Paramount had planned theme parks there which are now stalling.

5-1: Rio: For: Growing economy, sizable market, Western-pop-culture friendly. Against: stability issues, big WDW visitors.

2-1: Mumbai: my money is on Mumbai for the exact same reason Shanghai is going forward: India's burgeoning 300,000,000+ middle class. Iger has repeatedly stated that the aim of Shanghai DL is to create another platform to introduce Disney media to a massive, untapped market. India would seemingly be more welcoming to Disney than China - a political democracy, pro-American, most Middle Class are English-speaking, Disney Channel already has a presence.

I'd bet on a Mumbai resort around 2020-2025

I think Disney would be really smart to open a resort in Brazil. South America's one of the last few continents without a Disney resort on it, and a new resort there would probably cash in on a market that apparently has a serious interest in Disney parks, if WDW attendance patterns are any indication. Tokyo Disneyland was built largely as a response to, and a way to alleviate, the massive crowds of Japanese people that were visiting Disneyland in the 1970s/early 1980s. Tokyo Disneyland, as a result, both evened out crowds in Disneyland, while also creating a hugely successful resort in a whole new region of the world. I could see a Brazilian Disney resort very much doing the same thing. Plus I'm imagining Mickey and Minnie in Latin costumes for a Carnaval parade.

Re: Where should the next Disney resort be located?

This may sound totally off-the-wall to some people but my pick would be a new U.S. park in Maine of all places. Hear me out........

A few years ago, LL Bean had floated the idea for an "Adventure Park" on about 400 acres that they own near their flagship store in Freeport, Maine. This land is right off I-95 about 20 minutes North of Portland, 2 hours North of Boston, 4 hours North of NYC......all accessible soon by Amtrak as well as an expanded Portland Jetport. The park would have included a hotel/resort with a golf course as well as attractions that would have revolved around the "outdoors". Unfortuantely, the concept was never fully explained and faded away with no further news after the economy tanked.

I think that this location along with a partnership with LL Bean would be a great concept for Disney's Wilderness Adventure Resort. A high-bred resort/theme park based around the Great Outdoors........maybe a Disney's Wilderness Lodge, Indoor/Outdoor Waterpark, Campground, golf, restaurants and Disney themed "adventures" co-sponsored by LL Bean (think kayaking courses, fly fishing, rock climbing, etc, etc)........along with a New England village "Main Street" type concept and possible mini-theme park (seasonal May-Oct).

Obviously, the investment and attendance would be smaller than existing parks/resorts........but I think that a cold weather Disney attraction is much needed somewhere in the U.S. I think that it would be a very different concept for Disney that may actually attract "new" fans to the Disney family of parks and resorts.

On a side note, it should be noted that LL Bean's flagship store attracts 3.5 million visitors annually, many of them high income tourists from the Boston to Washington DC belt.
