Re: The Future of Imagineering: Season 1, Project 1

Okay I have graded all the project proposals we have received thus far. If more are posted, then I will update it. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me out or ask and I will explain my judging. As you will see, I graded pretty tough, as only the best ideas should ever be allowed into Walt Disney's original park.

    Right Ear: Autopia refurb
Originality: 5/10- Race theme is already existent at Walt Disney World and doesn't work well

Creativity: 9/10- Creative ideas, particularly the ride system

Realism: 2/10- Can't happen, ride system doesn't exist and the schematics aren't making sense to me

Fun: 5/10- For thrill seekers, it would be fun and also tame for ones preferring a quieter ride, but since the track has been removed, it could become out of control and painful if you continually hit the walls

Detail: 3/10- Decent amount of detail, especially in queue, but all the details along the ride itself have been replaced by CM booths? Doesn't work for me. Attractions should transport you to another time and place, but this just isn't doing that.

Presentation: 4/10- Hard to picture some aspects, especially how the ride system will work

Overall: 28/60- Decent idea and creative, but the feasibility of it happening and working are slim to none. The racing theme has already been proven to be a failure at Walt Disney World

    CazzaCarroll: Winnie the Pooh refurb
Originality: 8/10- Haven't seen this concept proposed before, very unique

Creativity: 5/10- Pretty much a rehash of a part of the new film

Realism: 8/10- Could definitely see this happening

Fun: 6/10- Great for kids and families, although the story seems to be dragged out through the attraction.

Detail: 6/10- Not much detail described. Loved the AA additions though.

Presentation: 11/10- Broken up so it was easy to understand and imagine, extra point for layout art

Overall: 44/60- Really enjoyed it, but it seemed to be an extended version of a small part of the film. With that said, I really liked the additions and addition of AA figures and could easily see this happening at Disneyland

    dth316: Indiana Jones Adventure refurb
Originality: 10/10- Haven't seen any of these concepts before, just awesome

Creativity: 9/10- Great ideas, specifically with the snake scene, boulder scene, and branch scene

Realism: 8/10- Would love for it to happen

Fun: 10/10- Every aspect of the remodel would be a benefit and make the attraction more fun

Detail: 10/10- Excellent attention to detail, especially with the queue elements, bridge scene, and falling down the staircase

Presentation: 6/10- Difficult to picture at points, but not terrible

Overall: 53/60- Excellent ideas. I have seen a lot of Indy refurb ideas, but haven't seen these before. Love the attention to detail and it would make the attraction easily the best in the Resort.

Uncle Scrooge: Indiana Jones Adventure refurb
Originality: 4/10- A few good ideas, but a lot of them were the same as dth316's proposal. Also, basically just said "Fix old effects", doesn't work for me

Creativity: 2/10- Again, not very creative, he had maybe 1 or 2 original ideas, the others I have seen on here before

    Realism: 8/10- Could easily happen

Fun: 7/10- It's a fun attraction already, and these fixes would make the attraction better

Detail: 6/10- A few good examples of detail, but not totally apparent

Presentation: 4/10- Simple bullet points and not a whole lot of detail in explaining additions

Overall: 31/60- Not totally detailed and a bit hard to understand. Did exactly what I said not to do and just said "Basic painting, cleanup...". Not original ideas, taken from other proposals in the contest and posted over the years.

    jsanch2: Matterhorn refurb
Originality: 8/10- Have never seen this type of idea before, very original!

Creativity: 9/10- Creative ideas, particularly for the backstory

Realism: 4/10- Could see this happening, very good and feasible ideas, but it doesn't work with the existing Fantasyland theme. TV screens and bobsled tournaments in a fairy tale village? Doesn't work for me

Fun: 7/10- Great update to a classic attraction. Very different and immersive

Detail: 9/10- The detail in the queue sounds great and very much like Expedition Everest

Presentation: 7/10- Easy to understand attraction, but art would have been helpful for the queue area

Overall: 44/60- Very good ideas and a good eye for detail. The only downside is that it doesn't fit in with the Fantasyland theme. TVs and sponsored bobsled tournaments just don't work with the fairy tale village. That said, it's a very solid and creative idea with only one major hiccup.

    basketbuddy101: Indiana Jones refurb
Originality: 9/10- Very very creative proposal. Out of the many Indy ideas I have seen over the years, a number of these ideas are very good and very original

Creativity: 10/10- Awesome use of creativity, specifically with the show script and "Marabic" in the queue, lava fountain effect, treasure chamber room, and extra arrows in the dart hallway

Realism: 7/10- Would absolutely be thrilled if this came to life, but the cost may be a lot for the extra effects

Fun: 9/10- With the amount of detail and little touches added, it would make this already fun attraction even more fun. Awesome!

Detail: 10/10- Exceptional amount of detail. I love the queue upgrades, the touches like the speedometers in the front of the EMVs, and the randomized snake squirts.

Presentation: 12/10- Very easy to understand with lots of detail. Good explanations and organization. 2 points for 2 pieces of concept art

Overall: 57/60- Excellent idea. I would be absolutely thrilled if this happened. Not only does it use an extraordinary amount of detail, it also is very original and exceptionally creative. Awesome!!

    Bendall: Space Mountain refurb
Originality: 10/10- Very original ideas. Haven't seen any of these before

Creativity: 9/10- Really great ideas. I really liked the inclusion of actual space travel facts and events. Good background story, too.

Realism: 7/10- Could see this happening

Fun: 7/10- Very fun proposal. The only thing I didn't care for were the on-ride interactive elements. I don't think people would understand that they need to do something in the middle of the ride

Detail: 9/10- Very good detail. I like the restructuring and additions to the queue

Presentation: 10/10- Easy to understand and picture. Good use of photographs and examples

Overall: 52/60- Very good ideas! I really enjoyed the additions and alterations to the queue, especially the inclusion of real facts. The only thing I didn't like were the interactive features on board, but those are just a minor detail. Great job!

    williamtheking: Matterhorn refurb
Originality: 9/10- Very good ideas. Haven't seen many of these before

Creativity: 10/10- I really like the snowstorm effect. Very creative, as are the additions to the queue

Realism: 7/10- Could see it happening

Fun: 10/10- Could make the attraction much more fun, especially the special effects that can transform the park

Detail: 8/10- I really liked the detail added to the queue, but the troll seems kind of random in my opinion. I also liked the detail of enclosing much of the moutain.

Presentation: 9/10- Good and clear descriptions, extra point for concept art

Overall: 53/60- Very good and very creative ideas. I loved the interactivity of the entire park and would love to see this happening! Great job.

mickeyfan1: Snow White's Scary Adventures refurb
Originality: 7/10- I've seen a number of these ideas before, but the queue upgrades were very original

Creativity: 6/10- Good ideas, but a lot of the proposal was just saying "fix this, fix that"

Realism: 2/10- Could not see this happening at all. In my opinion, it isn't necessary.

Fun: 8/10- Would make the attraction more fun and more of a spook-house like attraction

Detail: 4/10- Much more detail could have been added

Presentation: 3/10- Hard to picture some ideas, and I'm not sure what you mean by saying "also the mirror on the wall scene has been repaired"?

Overall: 30/60- Some good ideas, but the proposal lacks in detail and creativity. In my opinion, not very many of these upgrades are needed to the attraction

Stitch626626: Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters refurb
Originality: 9/10- Great ideas that I haven't seen before, nice job!

Creativity: 9/10- Liked the use of characters from the TV show. I also liked the better plot line that you created

Realism: 6/10- Would love for it to happen, but don't believe that Disney will do it

Fun: 8/10- Very fun additions, specifically the city scene and use of AA figures.

Detail: 9/10- Great attention to detail, specifically with the combination of 3D and flat backgrounds for more depth and making the targets more inconspicuous.

Presentation: 6/10- Difficult to picture at points, but not terrible

Overall: 47/60- Really great ideas and would definitely be a big step up. I like the use of AA figures and backgrounds to be more immersive. My big complaint is that people who aren't that aware of the TV show may be lost with the addition of the characters, but the queue upgrades were also great.

    hawk671: The Haunted Mansion refurb
Originality: 6/10- Some good and original ideas, but many I have seen before

Creativity: 7/10- Some really creative ideas, specifically in the exit crypt and Seance Circle.

Realism: 8/10- Could see this happening, as it's really just a lot of minor effects with an enhanced sound system

Fun: 10/10- Would make the attraction very fun and a lot more frightening, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Detail: 8/10- Good attention to detail, especially with the outdoor cemetery

Presentation: 10/10- Good layout and easy to understand. Thank you for the visuals, but I wish you would have had some of your excellent concept art!

Overall: 49/60- I really like a majority of the ideas, but I also felt like many of them had been proposed on these boards before. With that said, I really loved many of the small additions like the hands in the crypt, Stretching room sounds a la WDW, and the addition of the Hatbox Ghost.

    MouseEars: Storybook Land refurb
Originality: 8/10- A lot of new scenes, but some I have seen proposed before

Creativity: 5/10- Some nice ideas, but I enjoy Storybook Land because we just see the character's homes and not just recreate scenes from the film. I don't like having the characters included, as it should just be the structures

Realism: 3/10- Can't see this happening because it would get rid of some scenes like the Mills to be replaced with films that many people have never seen or have no emotional connection to.

Fun: 8/10- For kids it would be fun to see their favorite characters, but overall detracts from the immersion of being secluded in these villages

Detail: 7/10- Good attention to detail, but I don't think all these scenes can fit the in the spaces you specified.

Presentation: 10/10- Good presentation layout and great visuals to help picture the scenes

Overall: 41/60- Some decent ideas, but I have seen many of them already. I also don't agree with the inclusion of characters, but it was a very creative and detailed proposal

    DisneyKid1994: Indiana Jones Adventure refurb
Originality: 7/10- A lot of these concepts have been rehashed before, but I did like the change of the Bug and Rat rooms

Creativity: 6/10- Again, some very good ideas, but some have been proposed before. The Everlasting Power sequence was very creative, but I didn't like how most of the proposal was just "fix this and fix that"

Realism: 8/10- Could see a lot of this happening

Fun: 9/10- They would definitely make the attraction more fun and immersive.

Detail: 8/10- Some very good attention to detail, especially with the Cavern scene and added Marabic to the queue

Presentation: 5/10- Difficult to picture at points

Overall: 43/60- Some nice ideas that would make the ride better. I liked the addition of more Marabic and the decoder cards and the switching of the Bug and Rat rooms, but I thought that more detail could have been added. Overall it was a solid proposal.

I suppose your right regarding the TV show references, but I think it would work better in Tomorrowland than a bunch of toys, regardless. And yeah, I realize that parts of it are a bit difficult to picture, as I kinda made it up as I went along. I didn't have a whole lot of time to explain some things, so hopefully I can do better on future projects.

EDIT: Are you sure I should be docked 4 points because you don't think Disney would do something like that? How could I improve on the realism? My definition of realism is something that they could actually do such as repairing AAs, while unrealistic is having part of the space mountain track circle the park. What's yours?

I regards to response to my idea: Never been to WDW (wish I have). Technology would be improved from Luigi, actually in the cars with some sort of high tech fan pushing downward. The racing theme would actually be a high speed race (not too fast though, like 15-25 mph). Only 1 or two CM booths would be added. The track would mimick actuall racing and partually Test Track. Well its been fun. See you guys later.

I understand. This project was just to get a feel for how we judge and to see people's different Imagineering styles. Regarding your personal issues, we completely understand if you need to drop out or skip a project. Real life is more important than this competition and I hope that everything is resolved soon so you can continue competing.

For this project, I was looking at if the additions were really needed and if Disney would be willing to pay for them. You mentioned significant remodels, additions, and changes to an attraction that is only 6 years old. While some of these changes may be needed, Disney would not be willing to completely change this attraction so soon, especially considering it continually gets decent sized crowds. While I really enjoyed your ideas and thought that they were very creative, I don't think it's realistic that Disney would so significantly change this young attraction. I hope that helps.

But my point is, how would you improve a ride system that hasn't even proven it can work in a very simple format? The racing theme doesn't work in WDW and, from your proposal, I don't believe it would work at Disneyland at all, especially in Tomorrowland.

The beauty of Disney: you can always try to do the impossible. WDW's version is basicly a slower Autopia. In addition, mine would be themed to the future of racing. Hover cars will be the future(for now). Why shouldn't Disney to be the first to invent this technology. They basicly invented roller coasters and simulators (for theme park use).

But you didn't explain how you would do this. A HUGE part of Imagineering is developing the different aspects of the attractions. If you don't know how the ride system would work, then why post it? I am not arguing with you, as my grades are final, but a lot of your idea doesn't make sense technically and thematically.

^ There is only one way for Disney to use hover cars and that is with the use of magnets like some trains, I think they are in Japan. But if they were to use magnets you couldn't drive it like you do now, if it were to use the same technology as the Flying Saucers it would break to much.

@disneylandfan95. Yeah, but not a lot of ppl seen Peter and the Wolf or The Rescuers. If they have not seen the movie, I just wanted to let ppl know the idea of who these creatures look like. The rescuers are mice, not ppl, but they try to save Penny from a mean lady in a swamp with pet alligators! Peter and the Wolf has no words, but goes out in the woods to fight a wolf with a toy gun with a cork bullet on a string. I saw that there were figurinesin disneyland paris. At least i didn't say a land of Oz like paris. Thank you for your score though.

Who is this yellow bear? Where's Henry?
My name is in 3rd edition HM book! I'm Mari who sent in #7 for "Honorable Mentions"

Sorry if I came across as too harsh, as I certainly didn't mean to. This round is just to get a feel for how we judge and I hope I didn't personally offend anyone.

Good luck in Round 2, which has been posted!

What exactly were you expecting. Again, this is just an introduction and test run, if you will. The next project will be much more organized and each contestant will have just 1 score that all the judges have decided upon. This round was just to get a feel for how to complete the assignments and to see how we will judge the future projects.

No disrespect. I just don't have the time. You guys have some great ideas!
