I've always been curious about the fantasmic burning river effect. I've heard some partial explainations but never one that I really buy. Does anyone know how it really works?

There are gas lines underneath the river on the rivers bed that pump gas into the river with very high pressure and add in some flame starters on the island and the river magically is ablaze with high pressured gas the burns off and then the gas is turned off and it stops burning, there are about 15 miles of gas lines attatched to the bottom of the river in a special pattern to determine where the fire will be and the gas line has holes in it it push the gas through it, much as a fireplaces gas pipe has holes in it and it will push the gas to the top and set it ablaze, another cool but simple disney effect!

Indy Boulder -- How it Works.

    Quote Originally Posted by splashmountainfreak

I had the opportunity once to see exactly how the indy boulder effect worked. The ride broke down and we walked out with the lights off. I got a few cool pictures of things while we were walking out.

Basically, the way it works is that the boulder is spinning on an axle. The axle and boulder are mounted on a moving dolly with wheels which roll on rails, like an oversized train.

The entire boulder assembly sits on a large shelf which the jeeps drives under.

When the jeep approaches indy hanging on the rope, the boulder is actually spinning in the darkness. The lights (especially strobes) turn on the boulder, it appears as if it's rolling, and then it starts sliding forward about 10' on the rails. At the same time, the jeep lunges forward, and you go under it. The strobe lights really complete the effect by dissorienting your perception of motion etc...

    Couple of other notes:
    * The boulder is never even close to the jeep. In fact, with the lights on, you can see in my picture I am very close to the point in the road where it starts heading downward. Even with a flash, and the lights on in the building, you cannot see the boulder very wel at all -- hence my diagram on top of this image.
    * It's also pretty bizarre to see the boulder spinning on it's axle when it isn't actually moving forward. When the lights where on for us, the boulder just sat there an eerily spun with no music, sound or any other reason to be moving. :-)

    * Apparently the walls also move backwards to make your jeep look like it's going forward -- I didnt see this happening, so I cant vouch for it

Heres a picture of the effect with my own rookie overlaid graphics to help explain.

The mirrors you look through are semi transparent and the ghosts rotate behind them. The are lit just so you can she both your reflection and also through to the other side.

The ballroom effect is accomplished because
    Spoiler
the figures are actually above and beneath you. The ballroom is seperated drom the cars by glass and it is their reflection you see.

Those imagineers never cease to amaze me!
Though now with the EXIT sign, the dining room/ballroom's effect is revealed a little more than I'd care to be comfortable with....it really takes away from the "magic" of that certain scene. Seeing a green glowing TIXE takes away from that scene... was that recently added to the room below the tracks? I don't remember seeing it a few years ago...

Wow, I'm so jealous of your Indy evac experience. I've gone soo many times and never been evacuated from anything (except the very end of Winnie the Pooh).

Its not very glamorous at all really- my lead did it for us one night.
    Spoiler
The control for it is located on the controls for the carousel in FL. A CM watching from the side tells the attractions CM running KAC when to turn they key releasing the sword.

That's how its done! Amazing how simple some of these effects are! I guess that's why they fool us so easily.
