Came across an interesting video about the Imagineering of DCA 1.0. Weird to see Kathy Mangum in the video talking about how guests found the park lacking lol. She goes on to talk about John Lasseter and a bug's land. She seems almost embarrassed in this interview in comparison to how she talks about Cars Land lol. The whole video is interesting, we sure have come a long way!

Hahaha oh my gosh thanks for posting that. You're right, they have come a long way! I found it hilarious that the final moments of the video ensure the viewer that things will "get better". Seems odd in a video that's trying to flatter the then current park. There just wasn't much to work with I guess.

I think the daytime shots of the previous Pier scheme really looks bad. I know some of it depends on what kinda equipment your recording with but DCA 1.0's Pier looked pretty terrible in the daylight. I like that the newer Pier can look even better at both daytime and night.

I thought the most desperate part near the end was definitly the talk of the farm. Despite it all though I wish it could've been edited better somehow. Maybe with more clips showing off the areas and designs they're talking about. I've seen fan documentaries that do better. Blue Sky Cellar does great with editing together a nice relevant mix of art and current park photos with whatever the imagineer is discussing rather then just throwing up a few random clips while cycling whatever footage makes the park seem crowded.

And no, this concept isn't really overused in the theme park industry but I drove a car to get to Disneyland, at speeds a lot higher than 45 mph, so for me, just going fast a great ride does not make.
    1. This is the exact same as saying, "I go into houses all the time, so The Haunted Mansion isn't anything special." Or "I've ridden a boat, why is Pirates of the Caribbean interesting to me?"

    2. Your example of Tower of Terror being innovative and creative is specious in this example. You call RSR a retread of Test Track, and say that the idea is tired and shopworn. But except for the theming, Tower of Terror is just a "drop tower" type ride, which is FAR more overused in the theme and amusement park industry. Drop tower - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Note that I said "except for theming," which is the point you seem to be missing. Test Track is a GM car testing facility; RSR is a fictional racing vista by a fantasy mountain range featuring sentient cars. These two concepts have nothing but a very glancing commonality.

Oh so that area with the figure eight looking piece of track must be where the work on the vehicles and the ladder is the picture above

In essence, RSRR is a slightly modified Test Track ride system with completely different show and theme.

In other words, it is not a new, raising-the-bar attraction, but an enhanced existing one. The ride system is the common aspect.

The ride system isn't the only aspect enhanced from Test Track.

Why is everyone on here harping on Radiator Sprigs Racers ride system? There really is no other way to tell the story of the ride without it. And that's what separates Disney's rides from others is that they tell stories.

Re: Disney California Adventure Project Tracker 12

The main thing about RSR seems to be its ride system. That's the whole reason it's headlining the DCA overhaul. If it weren't for the ride system, it could be an omnimover and nobody would be making a big deal out of it. The ride system is what differentiates it from other Disney dark rides, so it really is a big deal. IMO, I feel that the headliner for the re-opening of DCA could've been a little more innovative (like Soarin' was when it opened the park in its day). I'll still love the attraction as a storytelling adventure with a fun ending. But that differnetiation from other rides (the speed at the end) isn't enough for me to hype it up as much nor think it was the best option (yes it tells the Cars story well enough...maybe Cars wasn't the best option either though).
In any case we will all most likely enjoy the ride. But to me, and maybe a few others, a little more uniqueness would've been nice, that's all. I won't be riding RSR thinking its the most impressive thing I've ever been on or that I'm getting a once-in-a-lifetime thrill like I did on Indy or Star Tours upon opening. The element that supposedly 'makes it' the great ride it's being hyped up as doesn't seem all that thrilling to me, so all it has going for it in my eyes is theming, in which case it could have just been a PoC or HM style ride, and not received nearly as much fuss
