Wonder how long it will take the Ice Cream Cart lady to figure out her hand motions for the new loop. (Those who know what I'm talking about will LOL!!!!)

I don't think the inclusion of the UP song is necessarily a bad thing, just because it's "Disney" music, doesn't mean it can't fit the time period.

Of course, the chances of it making me sad when I hear it is about 100%.

Yes to everything in this post, including the ice cream cart lady.

Sounds great to me. The Carl and Ellie theme will fit nicely I feel but perhaps that's just my bias towards that movie (my favorite). It won't be any worse than some of the current selections playing from "Oklahoma" and "Hello Dolly" on Main Street. It's kinda funny someone mentioned Disney Pixar as every time "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" plays on Main Street I instantly think "Ah, WALL-E" and have heard several people say similar remarks almost every time.

I doubt there will be anything from Poppins. The only confirmed bit of Disney music is from Up.
To be fair, much of the old music loop had some songs from Disney films, too. These include "Flitterin'", "Summer Magic", "Beautiful Beulah", "I Could Love a Million Girls", "Fortuosity" and "Let's Have a Drink On It". Those first four were from "Summer Magic" and the last two were from "The Happiest Millionaire" (all written by the Sherman Brothers, I might add). So it's not like having Disney songs in the music loop is a brand-new thing.
    My top favorite Disneyland attractions:

    1. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
    2. Pirates of the Caribbean
    3. Splash Mountain
    4. Mad Tea Party
    5. Peter Pan's Flight
    6. Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin

They use a song from Wall-E (which is from Hello Dolly) at the Magic Kingdom and surprisingly it fits quite well with the theme.

Actually, that music isn't from the beef commercials. It's "Hoedown" from Aaron Copland's ballet Rodeo that predates those dumb beef commercials by many decades. It's a Western-themed piece.

That's been part of the Main Street loop for many years now, far before WALL•E. The reason it fits is that it's in the correct style for the period.

The only thing I'm concerned about is what instruments they use. If the instruments and the way its played is done right, I think it would be okay.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. They're certainly not going to use electric guitars and synthesizers in that band. If you look at the photo on that Facebook event there are appropriate instruments: tuba, trombone, cornet, clarinet, flute, bass, piano, drums, banjo…

Re: New Main Street Music Loop to Debut January 9th

You know how they play songs on the Piano at the Coke Corner? They play things like Grim Grinning Ghosts and Yo-Ho. Those are relatively modern music, but they sound like they can work in the setting because of the selection of instruments used. So they can make modern music sound like they come out of early 20th century America, even though they aren't.

I admit, I'm nervous about the UP music, but I think they can actually make it work.

I'm alright with them mixing it up a bit. Hopefully the current songs will be mixed in as well.

Back in 2006 I wrote in another thread (which quoted yet another thread):

Most of them are there to supply an almost subliminal emotional connection with the area and even mid-west theme of Main Street. A few are even rather directly related to what's "going on" on Main Street (like "Surrey With The Fringe"). Not to mention that at least one of the folks that selected the playlist was a huge fan of those movies!

In another thread on the use of "Blazing Saddle's" music in Frontierland, I posted the following:

It got there mainly due to Tony Baxter, Eddie Sotto and Disneyland's own music master: Stacia Martin, who Imagineering called in from Disneyland to consult and help build a playlist.

Many years ago ('91-'92) when it was decided to update the music tracks all over the park (mainly because they were creating new tracks for the then soon-to-open Euro Disneyland theme park), they felt they wanted not only generic historical theme music, but also more contemporary music that would make the same type of subliminal emotional connection to the newer generations. And especially for Europeans who got much of their U.S. cultural musical "connection" from the scores of U.S. films and television. They selected scores from various non-Disney movies and television shows, along with some other pieces (like from composer Aaron Copland) to include in the new tracks.

Tracks from The Music Man, Hello Dolly, Blazing Saddles and many other non-Disney films and TV shows made the cut. However, Stacia (being a true blue Disney person) was particularly proud that a cut from Walt Disney's "The Happiest Millionaire" made the list (it's her favorite Disney live-action film).

Additionally, Walt Disney was a big fan of Meredith Wilson and his Music Man play. So much so that at Walt Disney World's Grand Opening in 1971, Roy O. Disney (Walt's brother) felt it would be appropriate for the celebration and asked Meredith himself to personally lead a huge Marching Band featuring 1,076 trombones down Main Street at the festivities. It was quite a sight! So there is a real history between Wilson and Disney there.

The thought was that when the park opened in the 50's, all those traditional ragtime tunes were quite truely nostalgic to adults of that time, as many of them recalled that era first-hand. But later (especially as those older folks were sad-to-say...dying off), newer generations needed their own songs that invoked the same period to them...from more contemporary films and such. Songs that may not always be absolutly identifiable to them, but were familiar enough to make the subliminally reassuring connection for this "new" nostalgia of the same period, for this newer audience.

I really like the idea of period style Disney themed on Main Street. Really curious to see how it turns out.
