Re: Behind the Wall: Matterhorn Bobsleds Refurbishment

Interesting. I would love to see a picture of how their queue works. It seems that most of the Disneyland queues are awful. Almost all of the E-ticket attractions have a staircase or some other pinch point right at the loading platform that interfeirs with the grouper. Guests have a hard time flowing in at a rate which the grouper can reliably fill cars. Not only that, but if the grouper needs a group of two, it is often almost impossible for one a few people back to sqeeze down the skinny ramps or stairs that make up queues like Screamin', Indy, BTMRR, Space, Splash (a bit better now), etc...

Re: Behind the Wall: Matterhorn Bobsleds Refurbishment

I LOVE this downtime construction video. It is showing us all the great reasons this attraction is closed for so long. Obviously we on the interwebs have been anticipating it, but lots of those casual visitors or tourists who don't check ahead of time now have a REALLY nicely presented answer for when they complain about it being closed. If only they had the video playing when you came up to the mountain... or maybe it will be accessible from the Mobile Magic app when you are in the park!!

Someone asked about possible track replacement... The answer is that the downtimes in 2011 were for track replacement in preparation for the new vehicles, or at least that's what Al Lutz reported.

Will the actual total possible riders be less per train/car now? 6 instead of 8?
In theory the capacity is decreasing but in actuality having 6 distinct seats should increase tha hourly ridership as more sleds go out with 4 riders than 8 riders.

It seems like these new cars should load faster since everyone can jump into their own seat instead of climbing one after the other into the same seat. Faster loading may only be a benefit though if they can launch them into the mountain more frequently than in the past.

I'm really going to miss sitting with my girlfriend on the Matterhorn, but it will be nice to have a higher capacity and a nice new looking mountain.

Space for one thing... lines take up a lot of room, plus the separate room on the loading platform.

Yeah, faster is nicer, but they are still constrained by what the ride system will allow out on the track. Just means less chance of cascades (which I don't think has been a problem on the Matterhorn??) and easier for the crew to run at max capacity.

If you want to know what it is like to load/unload a roller coaster, get a job at Disney or simply play this game:

In theory, 8 passengers is better. But most of the time, at least from what I've seen, people don't ride in tandem; they get their own seats. So it brings it down to about 4 or 5 passengers.

I too will miss the cuddle seats, but maybe this will bring the line down.

It's Great that they have a WDI Graduate, a member of the Society of Arts and Craftsman, and Veteran Disney mountain painter on the refurb team, who has painted Disney's biggest mountains. If you are in the new Single line will it be like Snow Skiing where you yell out "Single" to find a sledding partner? May be a new Matt'ch fad.

Also, people are grouped 2 or 3 rockets in advance of boarding. I don't see it being a problem.
they're configured differently as they have CMs dedicated to just unloading you (2 of them) so the rockets advance without guests in them making loading much faster. Line reconfiguration, track sensor changes but that's factor that cannot be changed now. Just because they have the same ride layout doesn't mean they run EXACTLY the same as us. Am I saying it's impossible? no, just difficult to add in.

    ...seriously
