    Carnation Cafe 1 shutter

I love the look of the carnation cafe exterior. I have only seen it in pictures but it really pops. The one thing I can not seem to understand is the 1 shutter. With all the windows, there is just 1 closed shutter (no open shutters). It drives me crazy! Anybody have any thoughts as to why???????

I'm guessing you are talking about the front shutter as in this picture:

Considering this was taken from Yesterland.com, I'm guessing that it has been that way probably from the beginning. I would guess it was done to give the building a unique, actual used feeling instead of it being perfectly done and staged. Have those little quirks like that makes it more believable as a real turn of the century street that is being used.

Actually I never noticed it until you pointed it out.

    never noticed it either.
There's also not a piece of wood (have no clue to the correct name) crossing in the center of the window.

I believe there is a speaker behind the shutter.

Yup, that shutter hides a big 'ol speaker that pumps out the background music for Main Street, and also plays parade music. It's a trick used on many park buildings.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed! It was bugging me too (not that it's bad, it just made me wonder). But I never realized it was always like that, I only noticed after they started redoing it. It looks like the building is winking at us.

Very true. I do not think it is bad, just odd but it make since with a speaker there. I also am glad to see the picture from yesterdayland.
It is fun how you do not notice something until you do and then that is all you see.
    Thanks for all the information!!!

As you can see in this picture from 1956 (courtesy Gorillas Don't Blog), the "shutter" is not original. I believe it was installed along with the speakers for Light Magic, but I would need more pictures to be sure.

The time frame fits. Light Magic was in 1997 and that is the year that Carnation Ice Cream closed so the picture from Yesterland is probably from 96ish to 97 before it closed which would have been right after they did the infrastructure improvements for Light Magic.

I actually like that it's a street corner.
Had no idea it was changed.

This looks so nice! Why can't they make it look like this, instead of what they're currently doing to it? (Count me as one who doesn't like the awful reddish pink color they've chosen!)

I don't like the color they painted it either. It's way too harsh looking. I also noticed the one shutter and thought it looked odd.

Mictorian paint job aside, they could at least put the awning back so it hides the shutter.
