    Viewliner

Hey there everybody. Maybe this old news for you guys, but thought I would share the picture anyway. Apparently the old viewliner was sold to the Portland Zoo back in the day and now it makes round trips between the zoo and the Portland Oregon Rose Gardens. For some of you that don't know how it looks now, I included a picture. Just a little piece of Disneyland history up here in the great northwest.

    Howdy Scott,

What a delight to know it's still around after all these years! It may be old news to some folks, but, gosh your post is the first time I've heard about it. It is a genuine piece of Disneyland History...Walt
Disney himself once drove that thing around the track in the Happiest Place on Earth.

Thank you for sharin' the news!

Adios for now. Talk to ya on down the trail.

That's not the Viewliner. It's not even close. The Viewliner front end is completely different, as is the side trim and assorted other details. The originals were scrapped.

Bingo. Lots of pix on Google Images of the actual Viewliner.

My bad! Shouldn't have just gone off the word of the train guy at the zoo. Apparently the zoo train started in 1958 and is a cousin of the viewliner, but is actually a replica of the Aerotrain. I have been plunked by zoo train conductor. Sorry guys.

Yeah, let him know the Zooliner at the Oregon Zoo in Portland opened in June, 1958 and was built in Portland at the Hirschberger Sheet Metal Company in the winter of 1957-58 on designs based on the Aerotrain. The Aerotrain was an attempt by General Motors to get into the passenger train business, with several full-size Aerotrain trainsets operating for passenger railroads from 1956 to the mid 1960's.

The Disneyland Viewliner opened in June, 1957, was built by WED in Southern California, and operated through the summer of 1958, simultaneously operating while the Zooliner debuted 750 miles to the north in Portland that summer.

I knew nothing about the Portland Zoo until this thread, but I found all that out after a 90 second scan through some Google links. Maybe tell the train guy at the Portland zoo about Google, while you're at it?
