Monster's Inc Mike and Sulley To the Rescue! Ride with Pictures and My play by play

My thoughts on the Monster’s Inc. ride at Disney’s California Adventure.

First off, I think it's a great dark ride. It is not too short as some
others and they did a very nice job in each of the rooms. I feel that I was
immersed into the world and the story of Monster’s Inc. film.

The Queue line

I feel, like many others, that they could have done more with the queue.
Maybe they could have added some TVs outside. A lot was reused from
Superstar Limo, such as the phone booth with the TV screens above them and
the cars are the same but remodeled as Monstropolis cabs. They also use the
TV screens to show us about the child loose in Monstropolis and various
commercials of things seen in the original film. They have a snack machine,
drink machine and newspaper stand with gag items and headlines that are
really funny. They were on day two of the soft opening, {12-21-05) and
there is already some visible wear in the queue. I took a picture of some
blue paint scratched off in the line and you can see orange paint
underneath.

The Ride

After you pass through the queue, you’re loaded into a three row taxi cab.
The cab I used had the first two rows taken out to fit a wheel chair in with
a row in the back for other passengers. On the ride you first see freeway
signs below the city skyline, one reads “13 East Downtown Monstropolis” with
arrows pointing down. The next sign reads, with an arrow, left “13 West.”
Below that is reads “Monstropolis Blvd.” with an arrow to the right which is
the way we are going. Nearby there is a sign that changes as you drive by.
It indicates “Don't stalk” in red and then “stalk” in green. Inside the
vehicle are video displays, left over from Superstar Limo, that let’s the
riders know that there is a child loose in the city. Again, replaying the
scenes from the film.

Next the MTA door opens and you go into a long tunnel lit by black lights.
You turn left and see Mike and his girl Celia in a red car on your right.
Beyond that you see the city and there are all types of buildings and a lot
of little things to look at. To your left you will see Randall popping out
and then a reporter interviewing the “southern” monsters replaying the
scenes from the film where they saw Boo in Harry Hausens’. Just past that,
on your right, you will see Sully holding Boo saying “Oh Boo we got to get
you home!” Inside the windows of the building there are things like eyes
that follow you or a monster peering out. Lots of cool stuff to see each
time you ride.

I love the restaurant room at Harry Hausens. The smell of ginger and the
Sake’ pouring onto the floor from the knocked over tables are great effects.
It looks really neat. On your right, the Chief monster is on the phone
and yelling “There’s a Human Kid in here.” The windows have shadows moving
around like people are running around outside and you see you see Celia on
the right before the door to the next room. She says “Michael Wazowski! On
my birthday! I thought you cared about me!”

The doors then open to the next room, where Mike says “Celia try to
understand.” Sully and Boo are behind him trying to make a quick exit out
the door. I like how this all plays out from one room to another. A nice
connection.

The ensuing door opens and you are surrounded by a bunch of CDA’s. You hear
noises and talking and there is a helicopter in the sky with the wind
blowing around and lights shining in your eyes. Right before you go out the
door and into the next room, a CDS guy pops out on the left with wanted sign
and says “This is the girl we are looking for.” That is where Drew Carrey
was at in Super Star Limo and they seem to be utilizing the same popping out
feature.

The next room is the place where the Time Clock is and two Zit faced
monsters are arguing with the off pitch voices. A painting of Henry J.
Waternoose is on the wall to the left and there is a cork bored with a lot
of little things on it. Take a look at all the little details on the bored.
Oh, and the only time I saw Henry J Waternoose in the ride, is this one time
in the painting.

The bathroom scene is cute. Boo is in the bath room stall to the left.
Sully is by the door telling her to hurry up. Mike is off to the right by
the bench and the lockers. On the bench you see his large contact lens...
Also ducks in the locker hanging. Randall pops in and out in a disappearing
effect similar to the Blue Farie on Pinocchio’s Daring Journey. Then to
your right is a bin of towels, a hard hat hook and a first aid kit. Nice
touches I feel. Next thing you see is the Monster’s work area scene, where
the doors come down and they can enter. On the right is Randall hanging off
Boo's door saying “You’ll never find her door now! hahahaha!”

The door to the next room open and you see doors of every size and color
everywhere. Mike, Sully and Boo are above reaching for Boo’s Door. Sully
says “Hey Boo, there your door.” Mike is saying “We’re all most there
kido.” You turn the corner to find Randall hanging on the door next to
Boo’s door with him saying “Not so fast Sullivan! haha! He'll never get her
home now!” Probably dialogue taken from the film.




Hidden mickey on his leg

The next scene is where you’ll see doors everywhere. Looking towards the
doors on your left, I have founds out there are three random projected doors
that open. One is the snow monster with the yellow snow cones. He says “Snow
cone! Oh, no no no its lemon!” Second one I saw was the monster with the
sock on his back and the cda guys come out and jump on him as he screams.
And the third door is a cat jumping on a monsters head and he screams. I
like the fact that they do this to makes the ride different each time. Make
you feel like it has re-rideability.

Then as you turn the corner there are more doors everywhere. To your right
you see Boo on top of Randall with a big club in her hand. Randall is
changing all kinds of colors and patters as she hits him over the head over
and over. If you look carefully, you will see a hidden Mickey in one of the
changes. Boo is giggling and Randall screams “HEY! oooh! ahhh!
I love the effect of the all of the doors that makes you feel like there are
a tons of doors everywhere just like the movie.

In the next scene you see Mike, Sully and Boo at her door. Mike is saying
“It’s been the most terrifying day of my life!” Boo says “Mike Wazowski!!”
Then mike says “But I love you kido.” Now Boo says “Kitty.” Sully then says
“Kitty's got to go now.”

The next room is totally blacked out and is very small. There is music
playing from the soundtrack and another door opens revealing a couple of CDA
guys in their yellow outfits and the walls are covered with blue and yellow
decontamination tent. one saying nothing to sorry about folks just a
standard decontamination. There is a gust of air that blows on you from a
CDA’s decontamination machine. Then you see a CDA p erson being interviewed
by a reporter. There are is a truck with TV’s in the back where it looks
like a picture of the riders would eventually appear. The cameraman is
pointing his camera right at you.

Around the corner you stop briefly in front of Roz and get to interact with
her while waiting to go into the exit area. It's so much fun. Apparently
there is a camera and a cast member back stage that sees who is in the car
and makes Roz say different things to you. You can talk back to her and she
will say something else. I heard different things like “Hey girl in the
first row! I like your glasses. Want to trade?” “Are you two sisters?”
“Scream for me girl!” “Guy in the 3rd row want to go out on a date?” “What
cute little monsters you have.” and “Hey you in the front. What a hunk!” I
think its really adds something new each time you ride since you do not
know what she will say next.
