Re: Mad T Party Soft Opens - Photos and discussion

Melissa, Max and I were at the Mad Tea Party soft opening tonight from about 7 pm to just before dark. We loved the energy and the environment, the lights and the screens, and many of the characters and costumes (in particular, a Mad Hatter riding a giant pink flamingo). I agree completely with Tromo58 about the DJ versus the live band. When the DJ played electronic dance tunes, the crowd was charged up -- lots of dancing and lots of energy. When the band played, the energy was missing or forced (think Tomorrowland Terrace). We enjoyed the new arcade and the new Alice themed games, but we were disappointed that there weren't very many different machines when compared to Flynn's. Overall, we are exited about the Mad Tea Party and we look forward to spending lots of time there this summer. I also think that this show is quite a bit edgier than Tron.

Interesting comment, im kind of interested in knowing what makes it so wrong for children since i noticed people of all ages having fun in the videos that have been posted i also dont understand why it is inappropriate for a Disney park.

The sets are colorful and i saw nothing that was innappropriate, the walk around entertainment looks like something that could easily work in a parade and is definitely kid friendly and Disneyland has always had music and bands for decades playing in tomorrow land and never heard complains

The only thing that would seem unDisney would be the alcohol but that is even sold in several of their parks for years.

It all looks like its well control and people are enjoying themselves, I think their is worst thing children could watch or see in video games and cartoons than a few hundred guests dancing and having fun

And thats your perogative! I think its 100% fine and really gives the park more edge and excitement. And after 2 years of these things, its obvious many people love them. People dont have to like them of course and its easy enough to avoid it...like what I do with IASW lol.

Uhh. Not for me... Bummer, thought it was going to be more psychedelic stuff. Sorry, that was just horrible. Not the performance, they were great, just the music choices etc. It was 1/2 assed retro and 1/2 assed modern and made everyone feel sick... I think.

I haven't heard the music, so I'll hold off on that, but I prefer electronic music to oldies, so not so sure about that. Overall, I can't wait to experience this myself! It looks really cool! And better than I expected(I was hoping for something more classy/less rock and roll, but what can you do).
Trust me on this, I was there tonight, and they did not let up on the electronic music during the DJ portion. The thing I liked about Mad T Party the most was how spread out everything was. My group was by the House of Cards and the Mad Arcade all night and had a blast. We loved the Flamingo guys as well as the slinky dude. I will definitely coming back. Like tomorrow...

No food trucks then, huh? Then again, since it's soft opening, maybe there's still a chance.

That was the one thing I really missed from Glow Fest. Those food trucks had some really fantastic food to serve up.

Wondering how strong the drinks are this time. One of them is named after a very strong one, but I kinda doubt that Disney would let it be that strong for this kind of crowd.

I miss elecTRONica, but I am willing to give this a try the next time I go. But I still don't understand why TRON got kicked out when a brand new tv series attached to the franchise just premiered and a third film is on the way when Alice was over years ago.

I will say that I'm not a fan of these costumes though, and I can see the issue of the band vs DJ occurring, especially with this crowd.

Wow thank you for that!!!!!! That was really good! I lol at the first minute mark when a group realized you were filming them! LOTS of energy and lots and lots of people! The thing just looks really huge when its the first one that was pushed inside the backlot. I was worry being tucked in the back would bring out less people like GL and ElecTRONica...I was wrong lol. It just looks exciting with the videos, dancers, costumes, music, etc! The Flamingo and the catepillar is something you just done expect lol! This is going to be a big hit for sure! I can see myself hanging out there between FPs or after WOC and just enjoy the music and the energy like I did with the other two basically.

The ONE dissappointment I had with your video is you didnt go inside the arcade! I really want to see what that area looks like! I know its a matter of time before there is more vids and pics so no worries. Thanks again though, your vids are always great!

The "food truck" looked like it was selling speciality drinks like a Mad Hatter cup souvenir. I was expecting something with "food".

I liked the atmosphere, lighting, games, performers and music. Loved the flamingos and Human Slinky!

WISH LIST granted this is the 1st soft opening:
    (1) Futterwacken Dance Off Competition on the Hollywood Pictures Backlot Stage
    (2) Flogos shaped as "A,E,I,O, & U"
    (3) Someone suggested an "Eat Me" stand to sell food and desserts.
    (4) Maybe theme the Smoking Area to Absalom, The Blue Catepillar.
    (5) Apparently there is to be a "Dancin' with Disney" in Stage 17 between 1pm-5pm this summer. Wonder if there are any plans for it in the evenings?
    (6) I feel like the Face Painting is in an area with congested foot traffic. Perhaps relocating to be in front of Stage 17?
    (7) I liked how ElecTRONica had hula loops and frisbee games. So maybe in front of Stage 17?
    (8) I kind of wish on the House of Cards stage, they'd have cast members using Airzookas filled with smoke to blow smoke rings over the crowd.
    (9) Bubbles?

Very agreed. This is Disneyland's Videopolis reborn with Alcohol. Nothing wrong with the concept. Also reminds me of the main thoroughfare on WDW's Pleasure Island during its hey day. Wake up WDW.... there is a market for this kind of entertainment. WDW, Bring back PI like it used to be, not like it was when it closed. Which rumors are now that WDW is considering bringing back clubs and nightlife in yet another new concept. Well see if this is true but for now, I am glad Disneyland gets this, that there IS a market for this, and does it. They may have stumbled across this discovery by accident, but at least they didn't deny the obvious positive response.

I like it. Carry on Mad T Party.
